A Poppy Painting in Time for Remembrance Day By Rita Makkannaw

On a cold Friday in early November, painters of all abilities gathered at Central Lions to paint. The theme, being close to Remembrance Day, was poppies. Artist Marilee Barry guided the participants to accomplish their individual goals for their picture. She is also currently running a course which explores painting beyond the noble brush marks by using other tools. Participant Channe Broduer said “I love it. It’s such fun to raise funds.” Giselle Gaboury chose an interesting technique. She poured a blob of paint onto her canvas and used a straw to blow the paint in the desired directions. “We call it a pour technique” she explained and added “This is a really good time. I even took a day off work to attend.” “There is such comradery here. Everyone uses different techniques. There is no competition. It is just a wonderful thing to do” said Debra Triell. Fred Mann said “I can keep painting over the top, adding layers. This session is so relaxed and fun, and for a good cause. I can’t wait to retire. Then I can come to the centre every day. There are so many things going on.” Host of this fundraising event, Executive Director Susan Mann demonstrated how one can produce fantastic abstract art by pouring all the little leftover paints in a cup, then turning it upside down on a canvas. By rocking it gently to spread the paint to the edges, a beautiful piece of art is produced. This event raised just over $500 with the proceeds going to the new scholarship fund, which assists financially challenged members to partake in CLSA activities and classes. Happy Holidays!

Medical Marijuana (Cannabis) Forum By Rita Makkannaw

Presenter Dr. Mark Kimmins became interested in the study of cannabis when many of his patients shared how they believe they were helped by its use. His belief in the benefits of natural medicine sparked his interest in studying cannabis further.

Cannabis was used as a medicine in ancient times by civilizations all over the world. In North America, it was swept up in the Prohibition Movement and was made illegal in 1920.

At least 113 different cannabinoids have been isolated from the Cannabis plant. The best studied cannabinoids include tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), cannabidiol (CBD) and cannabinol (CBN). These different chemicals produce different effects. Some give a good ‘high’, and some provide relief from pain and anxiety. Great benefit has been found in treating auto immune diseases such as arthritis, chronic fatigue syndrome,

dementias, and others. It has helped many patients in palliative care.

Dr. Kimmins’ enthusiasm for the benefits of consuming cannabis is based on his extensive and ongoing research which stresses his findings that there appears to be little, if any, side effects along with no known international medical reports of death caused directly by cannabis use.

Dr. Kimmins also shared concern about the lack of control or knowledge of the exact chemicals

or process in the production of recreational marijuana available from non-governmental suppliers. He supports federally regulated facilities for production and distribution. These products can be orderd by mail. Kimmins says “Medical cannabis will hopefully become a healthier alternative for opioids in the future.”

Access to these medicines can be gained through physicians who may refer patients to a specialist

with a prescription for medical use.

Bill Hallam shared his personal story with his use of medical cannabis. Some years ago, doctors

told him to get his affairs in order: his cancer had spread. Bill decided to do for himself whatever he could, which included the use of cannabis. Today his cancer is static and he lives a healthy, wholesome life in the country.

A lively discussion followed these presentations including many excellent questions. Audience member Randy Lee shared other resources as well. Cannabis Revealed by Bonnie Goldstein, Marijuana, a Gateway to Health by Clint Werner and Cannabis in Medical Practice, by Mary Lynn Mathre, Ed., are some excellent books.

New Electronic Communication Tool – Constant Contact

For the past few months, our Google email server has been sporadic and it seems the more members’ names we add to our distribution list, the more problems we experience.

To solve the problem, we have subscribed to a wonderful distribution tool called Constant Contact, allowing us to email our monthly newsletter, important communiques, program updates and other information we think you will find valuable.

To make sure you are receiving our messages, check your ‘spam’ or ‘junk mail’ boxes for emails with the subject line “CLSA …” and move them into your inbox.

We received your email address from either your CLSA Membership Waiver form or the Subscription Service button on our CentralLions.org website. You can unsubscribe at any time by clicking the ‘unsubscribe’ word at the bottom of any email message we send to you.

This new system is strictly for our membership. We will not share your address with any external group. Your information remains secure and safe with this tool. We hope you enjoy hearing all the news that makes the news at Central Lions!

The Ace Has Been Caught! After seven weeks of Chasing the Ace, it was finally caught by member Amanda Tarnawski. The total amount awarded for the Ace was $286.

Amanda purchased $5 tickets during five of the seven weeks of the fundraiser, and her support finally paid off on November 21. “I am so surprised that my ticket was drawn! I usually just come on Tuesday’s to watch the entertainment, eat the popcorn and say hello to some friends.” She added “The Hula dancers a few weeks ago and the Ukulele players tonight were my favourites.”

This fundraiser made $395 for CLSA. We want to thank all the members whose club provided entertainment: Najm (demonstrated Arabic calligraphy), Young at Heart band, Firefighter’s Alumni band, Homegrown Harmonies, Hula Honeys, Swing Time Band, and the Ukulele players, levels 1 and 2. And a huge shout-out to the amazing volunteers who made it happen, especially Vic Kowalewich, Grant Robertson, Ramona Gallant, Carol Keeler, Bob MacDonald, Marilyn Wooley, Barb Spencer and the amazing Tracy Thorne.

Newsletter Notice The next newsletter will be a combined January/February issue. This issue should be mailed out, emailed and on our website mid-January.

Please let us know if you have recommendations on content for 2018. Our amazing newsletter team is willing to add items or provide special feature upon your re-quest.

Our thanks to the crew (Jean, Gloria, Rita and Susan) for the hard work they do to put this together for our members every month.

The major change for 2018 is that we are no longer issuing CLSA Membership Cards but rather, adding date stickers to your plastic City of Edmonton access card. Be sure to bring it with you when you renew. Step 1: Visit our fantastic volunteer at the left side of the registration desk to obtain an Membership Application form. You will then provide the volunteer with your plastic City of Edmonton card. If you are a returning member, provide your pink 2017 CLSA card too. Step 2: Complete the application form (please print clearly). Read and initial the CLSA Code of Conduct on the back page and leave these documents with the volunteer at the reception desk. This document will be kept on file for the next five years. You’ll only need to confirm the details and initial the Code of Conduct section each renewal period. Now wait for Sharon to call your name. Step 3: Have your payment ready, along with a list of Barcodes for the programs and clubs you are registering in. Step 4: While you are being registered and paying, a sticker will be placed on the back of your City of Edmonton plastic card. This is your proof of 2018 CLSA membership. It will have a membership number on it that will be recorded on the bottom of your application. Step 5: You are registered for your membership! Make sure to carry your plastic card - it is your proof of membership for access to our Fitness Centre, clubs and reciprocal senior centres as well as for future registrations. GOLD MEMBERS: You will have to return each membership year to fulfill Steps 1, 2 and obtain your new year sticker free of charge. Welcome to CLSA. We hope you have a wonderful year.

Photography Tip The art of composition is the creation of a visually compelling picture - a picture that evokes the interest of the viewer. Perspective: The angle that you shoot from can significantly affect the drama of a photograph. Consider the following: A subject can be made dominant by shooting from a low viewpoint or submissive by shooting from a high viewpoint. When photographing a child, get right down to their level to show his or her per-spective. A small change in perspective can remedy the appearance of a tree or pole growing out of a subject’s head.

Drop In Photography Group

The club provides a friendly encouraging environment for photography buffs of all skill levels. This is an opportunity to meet and exchange ideas and information. Join us at 1:00 pm in the Computer Lab - on the first Thursday of each month - and feed your interest in photography! Next Meeting: December 7th, 1:00 pm.

If your club has some information or photographs that you want to publish in the newsletter, please submit by email to [email protected] by the 20th of the month.

Lapidary - Making gems out of ordinary looking stones is what they do. Ron Deacon is the coordinator of this most interesting hobby club. The 14 members gather twice a week on Tuesdays and Wednesdays to transform rocks into beautiful stones that they can put in jewelry settings or just admire their beauty as is.

Fred Mayske was more than generous in his sharing about what this club does. When they find an agate the first thing they do is slice it on a diamond saw to see just what they have. “Then we shape it on a diamond grinding wheel, and onto the polishing. For that we use various grades sandpaper. They are finished off on a leather wheel with varying polishing compounds. Vinegar and tin oxides are often used. Jasper is different. No one should be intimidated to come and learn. We will help. No experience is necessary.” Don Pattice came over and joined the conversation. “I’m a pebble puppy” he said jokingly. “Not a rock hound, a pebble puppy.” Brian Goertz also joined in as he seriously explained about a leave-a-right. Then he laughed as he said “that is leave it right there. Sometimes the rocks will fool you and they are no good for cutting”.

Betty Walsh came over and showed us all her beautiful work. “This is a good club” she said. Everyone is so willing to share. Everyone helps one another.” The club has many rocks if newcomers want to experience this art form. Do drop in. It was a very

informative afternoon, to see the transformation of rocks and the comradery amongst the club

members. Everyone is welcome.

CLSA is collecting gifts for young people in our area again this holiday season. There are collection boxes at the North End of the building and along the Auditorium wall in in the Atrium. Unwrapped items will be collected until Friday Dec.15th.

QUIZ PAGE

Quiz No. 8 Answers

1. Holland legalized marijuana . They have an official policy, since 1976, of not enforcing existing laws against possession of small amounts or "coffeeshops," about 700 of them, selling small amounts. 2. Using marijuana leads to crime and delinquency. The rate of pot use is higher among offenders than nonoffenders, but that definitely does not mean that pot causes criminal behavior. 3. Marijuana is not as dangerous as tobacco. Marijuana smoke contains chemicals, toxins, tar and carcinogens which are harmful and increase the risk of cancer. There is 50-70% more cancer causing material in marijuana smoke than in cigarette smoke. 4. Marijuana kills off brain cells. It does not kill brain cells but it can cause changes in brain structure and function especially if used for a long period of time. 5. How many chemical compounds in marijuana ? There are over 400 chemical compounds in marijuana, but the two we know the most about are two cannabinoids called tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD). They work by stimulating receptors in the brain, triggering chemical reactions that affect the mind and body. 6. Can you overdose on marijuana? First you need to understand what an overdose is. An overdose simply means you take more than the normal or recommended amount. So is it possible to overdose on weed? Yes. Symptoms of a (nonlethal) weed overdose include anxiety, paranoia, dizziness, and loss of coordination. 7. Eating Mangoes Before Smoking Prolongs Your High. Consuming mangoes before or after inhaling THC rich smoke can prolong and possibly intensify your high. The chemical myrcene, that gives mangoes their sweet smell, contain terpenes. These terpenes interact with the THC chemical producing a faster and longer-lasting high. 8. Holding in Smoke Gets You Higher. This is most certainly a MYTH. When you inhale a cloud of marijuana smoke the chemical THC, which gets you high, is absorbed into the blood stream through the lungs in the first few seconds. 9. How many types of cannabinoid receptors are there in the human body? To date, only two types of cannabinoid receptor have been identified, the CB1 receptor which was cloned in 1990 and the CB2 receptor which was cloned in 1993. These two receptors only share 48% amino acid sequence identity, are distributed in different tissues and also have different signalling mechanisms. 10. Medical marijuana always gets you high. There are two main ingredients in marijuana: One is tetrahydrocannabinol (THC); the other is cannabidiol (CBD).
