You will be surprised to know that you and I (and everybody

actually) have somehow co-created the 2012 hype! We are somehowresponsible for it (albeit on an unconscious level). Thats something that I

will explain you later on. The burning issue now is the daunting date

that lies ahead of us (December 21st

, 2012), a date that each new day is

bringing us excruciatingly closer to it!

For the last two - three years we have been bombarded by a whole

literature of signs and wonders that supposedly are going to manifest on

the December 21st (or 23rd according to some other scholars)

apocalyptic date. We are told we will witness amazing planetary and

galactic alignments, colossal earthquakes will tear apart the Earth, an

entire planet will fall upon our heads, the Poles will be reversed, we

humans will evaporate, become beams of light, pass over to other

dimensions, you name it! Can we stand aside for a while and make some

sense out of all this frenzy?

I will never forget the summer of 2003 when people from my

neighborhood - who knew that I was into astronomy - were coming over

to tell me how much concerned they were, because somebody had told

them that planet Mars was about to come so close to Earth that it wouldultimately appear on the sky as big as the Full Moon! I patiently explained

to them that this wasn't the case and they relieved, turned back home. I

was puzzled though. How could the people of the 21st

    century believe in

such things? I realized then that some kind of primal, collective "sky -

phobia" resides in the people's souls. People become very susceptible

when they face larger than life issues they don't know much about, like

i.e. any mysterious (and thus potentially threatening) event taking place inthe sky, literally above their heads. Furthermore, in that summer I realized

that the popular beliefs, the rumors and the hearsay can dramatically

alter the shape of reality in peoples minds!

But what do we actually know about the December 21st

    , 2012

"apocalypse"? Supposedly our world is going to end then. The crucialquestion though is how? Not to mention, why? Is there a good reason for

this to happen? Is there something wrong i.e. with the Earth? Is it about

to crack and break up in peaces? The answer is negative, as far as we

know. Still very many people believe that our world is going to end on

December 21st, 2012 because the Maya foretold it. But in reality these

amazing people never explicitly mentioned the definite and irrevocable

end of the word in 2012! In any case, our cultural background is sodifferent that we cannot truly comprehend what the Maya were referring

to when they were writing about the end of this world. There might be

some cultural misconception interfering and ultimately distorting this

    end concept!

You see cultural misconceptions make it hard sometimes for people

of different ethnic, societal or other backgrounds to communicate. To give

you an example, there is a misconception produced to the English

speaking people by the Greek surname Blessas. If a Greek would come

over to you shouting Blessas - Blessas (meaning he is urgently looking

for a man called Blessas) all you would be hearing is Bless us!, Bless

us!. It would make no sense to you

To the Maya the concept of time was "cyclic" - and not "linear" like

ours. To understand the "circularity" of the Mayan time I will give you an

example drawn from the European builders of the Middle Ages. In the

Middle Ages people were building tall buildings too (cathedrals, for

example) and thus they needed some kind of crane to raise up the bricks

etc. But as there were no engines back then their solution was to put into

a large wooden wheel one or two men who were constantly walking to

the same direction. In this way the men were turning the wheel

(somehow like the hamsters), the wheel was turning the pulley of the

crane and thus the bricks were raised (see the image below).

Think now of such a wheel free standing on a road. Put a man in it,mark with some paint the point where the man stands and then tell him

to start walking towards a direction. The wheel will start moving, it will

cover a certain distance and as it will be about to complete a full cycle the

walking man will see the mark of the starting point coming again under

his feet. As soon as the mark reaches its feet the man should "brake" the

wheel and immobilize it. At that specific point the time of this specific

wheel would be over. But time in general would not be over of course!

  • 7/30/2019 A Plain and Essential Guide to the December 21, 2012 Phenomena - Excerpt-1

    5/19

    4

To continue the metaphor, at this point the man should exit the

previous wheel, get into a new one (that should be standing exactly

where the previous wheel was immobilized) and start walking again

towards the same direction. Something analogous will happen onDecember 21st. The biggest "wheel" of the Maya (the so-called "Long

Count" calendar) will complete a full cycle and it will be over. But this

does not mean that time will be over too. It rather means that on

    December 21st

we must exit the old wheel and get into a new one! And

this whole procedure might turn to be utterly unique!

So, to the Mayan perception the nature of time is "cyclic". It

advances in a cyclic manner producing distinct "cyclic seasons - wheels".

These cyclic seasons cover the distance corresponding to one full cycle

of theirs and at that stage they are considered over. Not before though

passing the torch onto a new cyclic season. Every major "cyclic

season" contains within it a series of smaller "cyclic seasons" (like the

Russian "Matryoshka" dolls who contain each other - and the larger one is

    containing all the rest).

In comparison to the Maya, our "linear" conception of time implies

that things are never repeated the same and that time is "running"

constantly forward, while the events proceed in a rather casual and

unpredictable manner. To a linear civilization like ours any kind of end

of a certain times means THE END OF ALL TIMES (like in a stretched chain,

when any single link breaks the entire chain collapses).

This chain breaking concept though does not apply to a cyclic

civilization (there is no end to a cycle. And even if we assigned to a cycle

  • 7/30/2019 A Plain and Essential Guide to the December 21, 2012 Phenomena - Excerpt-1

    6/19

    5

an end point automatically that would be the starting point for a new

cycle). What we are rather dealing here is the completion of a major cycle

and the completion of any cycle was to the Maya an event of extreme

importance. We know for example that they were performing specialrituals at the completion of their 52 years cycle - like putting out any lit

fire and noisily breaking up their pottery in order to propitiously transit

through the critical stage and step into the new 52 years cyclic period (a

period which is called the Calendar Round)! But if they were performing

such rituals at the completion of a relatively minor calendric cycle of

theirs think of the rituals they would perform at the completion of their

major cyclic period (the 5125 years period of the Long Count). Actually,it would be quite interesting to follow the December 21st rituals of the

approx. 5.000.000 Maya descendants living today in the Yucatan

    peninsula.

Personally, the more I get to know the Mayan spirit the more I

understand that to them, the end of their current Long Count calendar

does not automatically imply the ending of the world and the

extermination of the human race. It rather talks of a major transition, of

a HUGE one though - no doubt! And beyond this end to the Mayan

perception there is the opening of a new revigorating cycle, where

everything somehow will start anew! Under this point of view, the year

2012 should be considered a joyful one and not ominous and grim.

    The astonishing Mayan Calendar!

The Maya were unique in measuring with almost absolute precision

very long time periods (entire millennia i.e.). This is an impossible task to

do, unless you possess the knowledge that a year equals to - exactly -

365.24219879 days. This "sacred" knowledge actually eluded all the

ancient civilizations and we humans acquired it only recently. The ancient

Greeks and Romans failed miserably in measuring with precision long time

    7

Speaking of years, this fascinating people were not very fond of

them! They preferred to express the long time periods in daysand not in

years (this is one of the secrets that made them so capable in counting

long time periods with such an astonishing precision)! Thus, the Mayawould say a Baktun is 144.000 days long (instead of 394.26 years). To

them 13 Baktuns equal 1.872.000 days (instead of 5125.37 years)!

The Mayan calendar is composed of five different time blocks,

    five predetermined amounts of days.

    1) the Baktun (144.000 days or 400 years approx.)2) the Katun (7200 days or 20 years approx.)3) the Tun (360 days or 1 year approx.)4) the Winal (20 days)5) the Kin (1 day)

With these five time blocks the Maya could define any date in

their Long Count calendar with a staggering precision! They had a

unique way of writing the dates which reminds us of the so called IP

Internet addresses. See for example this Maya style date: 11.13.12.4.13

It might seem all Greek to you but this is actually the date when

    Columbus discovered America (October 12th

, 1492). This Mayan date is

actually telling us how many time blocks have passed from the Base

Date of the Mayan Long Count calendar until the discovery of America:

11 Baktuns, 13 Katuns, 12 Tuns, 4 Winals and 13 Kins. If we add the

corresponding days of these time blocks they amount to exactly

    1.682.013days.3

Once we begin to understand the cosmology of the Maya and the

structure of their calendar, the 2012 doomsday acquires a whole new

meaning to us. Actually the date 21 December 2012 is written in Mayan

style as 13.0.0.0.0 (meaning 13 Baktuns, zero Katuns, zero Tuns, zero

Winals, zero Kins - or to simplify it 13 Baktuns after the date 11 August

3114 BCE, which amounts to 1.872.000 days). The 21st

    day of December

  • 7/30/2019 A Plain and Essential Guide to the December 21, 2012 Phenomena - Excerpt-1

    9/19

    8

2012 can also be written as 0.0.0.0.0 (the last day of the current calendar

is identical to the zero day of the next one). The first day of the

imminent new Long Count calendar will be the 0.0.0.0.1 - corresponding

    to our December 22

    nd

, 2012! So when we look at the infamousdoomsday through the perspective of the Mayan calendar we realize

that this date does not truly represent an irrevocable end. It rather

reminds us of an odometer, which at some point reaches its limit, it is

zeroed and then it starts counting again from the very beginning.

We dont truly know why the Maya chose the date August 11th,

3114 BCE as the "beginning" of their current "Era". According to their

mythology, on that specific date their First Father erected the World

Tree (the so called Tree of Life that we encounter in the cosmologies of

many ancient civilizations. The Mayan World Tree constitutes the spine

cord of our three worlds: underworld - earthy world - celestial world).

Additionally, the first day of their calendar they identify with the Birth of

Venus (this event might have to do with the celestial phenomena I

explain in page 8). We know that the days around the mid of August are

signaling the culmination of the seasonal rains in that region (pretty much

as mid July - or some other period, according to the era - was signaling

in Egypt the imminent flooding of the Nile). It seems that there is some

reasoning behind the election of this date. But they might have chosen it

    arbitrarily too.

Some other ancient civilizations like the Byzantines indeed chose

rather arbitrarily the date of the creation of the World (September 1st,5.509 BCE.), on which they based their (linear) calendar. A Byzantine

scholar i.e. would write our year 2012 CE as: 7521 ACW - meaning "7521

years After the Creation of the World". The Egyptians on the other hand -

a people presenting striking similarities to the Maya - were considering as

the landmark of their calendar the date July 28th

    , 2767 BCE.

That specific date is so important that the famous Egyptian Eternity

Horoscope has been erected upon it. And rightfully so, because on that

    9

date some very spectacular astronomical - astrological phenomena

    occurred:

    1) The heliacal rising of the star Sirius - a very bright and

    important to most civilizations star.

    2) Planet Venus arose contemporaneously with the - heliacally rising

    - Sirius (a once in 243 years event).

    3) A clustering of the seven known in the ancient times planets

occurred in a small band of the sky - with the planets Mars, Jupiter and

Saturn forming among them a tight conjunction! You can see this unique

planetary configuration in the image below (taken from the astronomical

    program Stellarium).

The rare and quite extraordinary astronomical - astrologicalphenomena that occurred on the dawn of July 28

    th2767 BCE definitely

    11/19

    10

make this particular date eligible as a point of reference for a calendar, an

Era etc. Just by giving a glimpse to the sky of that date you can

immediately tell that there is something very special going on. This is not

the case though with the Mayan Base Date (you can see the relativeimage in the next page). If we apply to it the same criteria we do not get

similar extraordinary configurations. To the casual viewer the image

below - depicting the dawn of August 11th

    , 3114 BCE - looks somehow

interesting because of the presence of the planets Venus and Mercury.

But to an expert thats a rather empty sky (Venus and Mercury rising

before the Sun do not constitute - on their own - a very extraordinary

    event):

Probably the Maya arbitrarily chose this date (especially the year).

Otherwise it makes no sense the fact that back in 3114 BCE the ancestors

of the Maya had developed such an advanced civilization by which they

could define and deliver to the future generations the "Base Date" of their

almost flawless Long Count calendar! It couldn't have been so, unless

  • 7/30/2019 A Plain and Essential Guide to the December 21, 2012 Phenomena - Excerpt-1

    12/19

    11

their ancestors took the Long Count calendar directly from some extra-

    terrestrials or some Atlantis survivors!

If no extra-terrestrial intervened then this "Base Date" is probably

an arbitrary one (especially the year 3114 BCE). It is not signaling any

major astronomical, geophysical or societal event and it simply carries

some religious or mythological significance. Of course you might object

that the year 3114 BCE seems conspicuously close to a pivotal historic

period, where systematic agriculture and the first permanent villages

appeared in Mesoamerica. But actually these advancements took place

gradually and not particularly in the year 3114 BCE. Nor we have evidence

of some major event (a falling meteorite, a mega earthquake or a super

volcano explosion) occurring in the year 3114 BCE in Mesoamerica!

What we ultimately keep in mind is the fact that to the Mayan

cosmological perception the date August 11th

, 3114 BCE is very important,

so important that they based their entire "Long Count" calendar on it,

they set off a whole New Age from that date on!

    An amazing, whole new discovery!

We are a little bit disappointed by the fact that the Base Date of the

Mayan calendar seems casual and apparently is not connected to any

major geophysical, political or astronomical event. On the other hand, this

fact turns to be somehow comforting to us. A basic axiom of the Maya

cosmology professes that similar things occur during the first and last day

of any cyclic calendar. Thus, if nothing serious happened on the Base

Date of the Maya calendar then nothing serious will happen on its End

    Date (December 21st

    , 2012).

    13/19

    12

The date August 11th, 3.114 BCE looks rather insignificant if we

examine it under our modern astrological perspective. Things might

change radically though if we apply to it the proper astrology, the Mayan

one. No need to panic here! The Mayan astrology is far less complicatedthan the modern western one and it relies a lot onto the plain visible

observation. What you see is what you interpret!

The most important factor in Mayan astrology is planet Venus, the

brighter star on the sky, which we can see either early in the morning or in

the evening - depending on Venus' orbit. The morning Venus was

considered unpropitious to the Maya - it was related to death, destruction

and war. On the other hand, the evening Venus was considered

propitious and it was believed to exert a very positive influence on love

affairs, on fecundation issues etc. The morning Venus - although

harmful in general - was considered desirable on the so called transition

periods, on those occasions that is where a new process should be

dynamically started (as a New Era, a new dynasty ascending to the throne

    etc.).

With this in mind, it definitely comes as a surprise to us the fact that

on August 11th, 3.114 BCE Venus was the first (out of the triad Sun,

Mercury, Venus) to arise on the sky! On the very base date of the

miraculous Long Count calendar the holly to the Mayan people Venus

arose as a morning star - just before Mercury and the Sun. There is

indeed a sort of Venus Birth here, which is somehow attuning this

specific date to the Mayan mythology and cosmology. In the chart belowyou can Venus (in blue) rising in the east as the morning star. Venus is

followed by Mercury (in yellow) and the Sun (in red).

  • 7/30/2019 A Plain and Essential Guide to the December 21, 2012 Phenomena - Excerpt-1

    14/19

    13

But things get far more exciting if we take a look as well at the

morning sky of the End Date, December 21st

    , 2012. To our

astonishment, the very same sequence of planets is repeated! Venus (in

blue) is again a morning star, rising before Mercury (in yellow) and the

Sun (in red)! Exactly as the Maya cosmology postulates the "End Date" of

the current Long Count Mayan calendar is IDENTICAL to its "Base Date"!

That's an EXTRAORDINARY fact! You might say this is just a coincidence. It

would be then A RARE COINCIDENCE! It is rare for the "personal" planetsto appear in the very same sequence (Venus - Mercury - Sun) on the

morning sky of two casually selected dates. And what if these two dates

happen to be the very "milestones", the "Base" and the "End" date of the

Mayan Calendar? According to the Mayan Cosmology, the so called

inner planets were supposed to form such a kind of configuration on

these two calendric milestones of theirs. And here they are, indeed they

    are forming it!

    14

The Mayan "coincidences" do not end here though! If we display the

whole array of the seven known to the ancients planets for the "Base

Date" of the Long Count calendar then we get the chart you see below:

If we ignore for the moment the inner "planets" (Venus, Mercury,

Sun) and we focus on the remaining ones we see that they are displayed

in this sequence: Saturn (brown color), Mars (red color), Moon (green

color) and Jupiter (blue color). Please keep in mind this sequence and

remember as well that in this chart Saturn and Mars are on the left side

("oriental"), while Moon and Jupiter are on its right side ("occidental").

Let us see now the full array of the "ancient" planets for the "End

Date" of the Mayan calendar, as they are depicted in the chart below:

Again, if we momentarily ignore the inner "planets" we notice the

remaining ones are distributed in the very same sequence (Saturn, Mars,

Moon and Jupiter) as in the "Base Date" chart! In addition, Saturn andMars are "oriental" and the Moon and Jupiter "occidental" - exactly as

they were in the previous chart! And there is still more! Apart from the

sequence, the distances too of the specific four planets are almost

proportional! It is as if we took the Saturn-Mars-Moon-Jupiter sequence

in the "Base Date" chart and we "slipped" it upwards and on the left until

we formed the "Doomsday" chart! Not to mention the fact that planet

Jupiter is in both charts retrograde (and retrogradation was important to

    https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-3qfZq3T05Ak/TuHOEwjkV_I/AAAAAAAAAps/U0pJNIG9K9Q/s720/2012+Doomsday+-+simple+vault.jpg

    16

the Maya astrologers). All these "coincidences" are extremely rare and

correspond to one probability out of thousands!

There is no doubt that the "doomsday" chart is almost IDENTICAL to

the "Base Date" chart of the Mayan calendar! Oddly enough, our entire

Solar System seems to obey the Mayan rule that goes: "the first and the

last day of the "Long Count" calendar are somehow identical"! How can it

be? The planetary distribution is not exactly identical, but this might have

its own intrinsic meaning too. There might be a particular significance i.e.

to the "slipping" procedure we described above. Who knows if there is a

deeper "Mayan" meaning in the configuration of those 3 inner planets

"intercepted" between Saturn and Mars in the "Doomsday's" chart? In

any case, it is as if the Maya deliberately chose these two particular dates

as milestones for their unique and AMAZING Long Count calendar! They

managed to determine two enormously distant dates which are almost

identical astronomically and which are exactly 13 Baktuns apart! That's a

deed of a VERY ADVANCED civilization!

Is there a deeper meaning in the December 21st

    , 2012

    doomsday?

In reality, the Maya never prophesized the end of our Earth but just

the end of the current Era! How could a people of Central America haveknown thousands of years ago when our world is going to end? Who

provided them this ultra-hermetic high knowledge?
