The Papal Basilica of St. Peter has been called the greatest of all churches of Christendom and is the highlight of day five. It is the final resting place of the mortal remains of many popes and notable people. Many of these tombs are considered artworks in their own right. The central feature is a baldachin over the Papal Altar by Bernini. There are number of outstanding pieces of art in the basilica’s many niches and chapels, including Michelangelo’s Pieta. After a period of free time in the basilica, we will visit the Vatican Museum, which holds the largest collection of classical sculpture in the world. The Sistine Chapel is part of this extensive network of galleries.

Built in the early 400’s, the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore contains many treasures of the Church including fifth century mosaics in the aspe and on either side of the nave depicting the Coronation of the Virgin and scenes from the Old Testament. Day six will be one of our busiest with stops planned at seven historic churches, all within a radius of just a few miles. After St. Mary Major, we will visit Basilica of St. Praxedes, San Martino ai Monti, St. Peter in Chains, Sant’Alessio all’Aventino, Santa Sabina all’Aventino, the Basilica of Santa Sabina and Santa Cecilia in Trastevere. The trip back to the hotel via motor coach, pilgrims will enjoy a tour of the Illuminated Landmarks of Rome.

After breakfast, pilgrims will depart the hotel for the Catacomb of Priscilla, nicknamed the “Queen of the Catacombs” for its many martyrs and popes. The walls and ceilings display fine decorations illustrating Biblical scenes including the oldest known Marian paintings. Pilgrims will then board a bus for the Papal Basilica of St. Lawrence Outside the Walls, one of the Seven Pilgrim Churches of Rome and one of the five Patriarchal basilicas. Our next stop, The Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls, is one of the four major basilicas of Rome. After a tour of the Basilica pilgrims may venerate the tomb of St. Paul the Apostle, pray and explore the fascinating array of historical, religious and artistic sights at the second largest basilica in Rome. The next stop is Tivoli’s Villa d’Este, an excellent example of Renaissance architecture and the Italian Renaissance garden. We will finish the day at the Shrine of Our Lady of Divine Love, dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Pope John Paul II added the shrine in the pilgrim itinerary of the seven pilgrim churches of Rome, replacing San Sebastiana Fuori Ie Mura.

A walking tour of several significant sites begins with the Piazza Navona built on the site of the Stadium of Domitian and features the Fountain of the Four Rivers by Bernini. Next, San Luigi dei Francesi is where we will view three outstanding paintings by the master Caravaggio - The Calling of St. Matthew, The Inspiration of St. Matthew and the Martyrdom of St. Matthew. Next is The Pantheon, an ancient Roman temple that was converted into the Church of Maria ad Martyres, one of the city’s most spectacular sites. The Basilica of St. Mary over Minerva is so named because it is built on the foundation of a temple to Minerva, the goddess of wisdom. Christ Bearing the Cross, a sculpture by Michelangelo, is to the left of the apse and St. Catherine of Siena, patroness of Europe, is buried under the altar. When in Rome, a stop at the Trevi Fountain is almost a requirement and is next on the itinerary. The Spanish Steps climbing from the Piazza di Spagna to the Trinita dei Monti Church, then the Piazza del Popolo and the Church of Santa Maria del Popolo will be our last stops before the farewell dinner this evening.

Travel DayFriday, October 26 9 Rome, Tulsa

Depart for the U.S.A. with a late afternoon arrival in Tulsa.

The Cathedral of Orvieto has an astounding facade that is a kaleidoscope of colors found in mosaics soaring seven stories and marble busts and sculpted figures constructed under the orders of Pope Urban IV to provide a suitable home for the Corporal of Bolsena, a miracle revealing the truth of transubstantiation when a Host was bleeding so much that it stained the altar cloth. The cloth is now stored in the Chapel of the Corporal inside the cathedral. After lunch, pilgrims will be free to explore Orvieto before departing for the city of Assisi.

After Lauds and breakfast, pilgrims will visit the Church of Mary of the Angels, the place of St. Francis’ death. The Porziuncola is a chapel obtained from the Benedictines and restored by St. Francis himself where he founded the order of Friars Minor that would later become the Franciscans. It was also here that Clare embarked on her monastic life in 1211. The Basilica of St. Clare houses her relics and the miraculous crucifix that spoke to Francis. Visits to the Assisi Cathedral, important in Franciscan history, and and the Basilica of St. Francis, a focal point of both high art and intense spirituality, will finish the morning before returns pilgrims to Rome.
