BEFORE AFTER

PhD summary.Introduction.
•The dissertation was concerned with the design and implementation of a practical solution to support seamless mobility in future integrated heterogeneous networks.
Konzernentwicklung · talk_lce2005_final.ppt 4
PhD summary.Thesis.
•Transparent migration of ongoing data flows between two access points belonging to independent heterogeneous technologies is achievable, and tools and mechanisms for supporting this type of mobility should be placed within the next generation networking architectures.

PhD summary.Contributions.
•The design and deployment of an integration architecture that enables vertical handovers between the most popular wireless andwired technologies.
•A suite of Mobile IPv6 optimisation mechanisms.
•The design and implementation of a software solution to enable complete mobility support for nomadic users in 4G communication systems.

PhD summary.MIPv6 optimisations.
RA frequency
Discovery time is reduced, but there is a limit for each technology
RA Caching
Discovery time reduced to zero, but needs ubiquitous upper layer
BU simulcasting
Registration time reduced to 1.5 * RTT of fastest network, but requires anticipation
Soft handover
Packet losses reduced to ~ zero, but needs overlapping networks
It is the best option for Overlay Networks, but there are some details to be solved

Lessons. The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.
•Very interesting learning process
•Publications (including conference trip)
•Development of self-motivation
•Nice to be called “Doctor”
Konzernentwicklung · talk_lce2005_final.ppt 19
Lessons. The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.
•Working alone
•Too high personal expectations
•Lack of discussion
•Collaborations can go wrong
Konzernentwicklung · talk_lce2005_final.ppt 20
Lessons. The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.
•When you don’t meet your supervisor for more than three consecutive months
•Skipping lab for more than five days without knowing why
•First paper rejected… no worries
•Second paper rejected… keep going
•Running out of funds… finish on time!
Konzernentwicklung · talk_lce2005_final.ppt 21
Advice.Do and Don’t.
•Don’t disappear from the lab
•Don’t believe you know everything
•Don’t assume you have 4 years to finish your PhD
•Do look for discussion with your supervisor and peers
•Do try to meet your supervisor on a regular basis
•Do publish and try hard to do so
•Do look for fruitful collaborations, two heads are better than one (most of the time)
•Do build your personal network!

Conclusion.
The PhD program is a long self-motivated process worth to pursuit. Sometimes you don’t think so. However, there are many rewards along the road to keep you going – just be careful to look for them and enjoy it.
