We’re all still absorbing the many ways that life has changed since COVID-19 broke into our vocabulary as a double-whammy threat to personal health and the economy.
Here’s just one way: The fast-changing seating configurations on our live editions of INSIGHTS ON PBS HAWAI‘I. Week by week, the program morphed – from an in-person gathering place to a mostly virtual meeting.
For decades, the program’s centerpiece was a single table around which the host and guests took seats.
Then, with new guidelines about social distancing, PBS Hawai‘i TV studio crewmembers carried away the familiar table and placed it in storage. Out came two long tables, with a guest seated at each end, and the moderator in between at a smaller table.
Also gone were the small microphones, called lavaliers, that our production crew would clip to participants’ lapels or collars. Instead, to avoid physical contact, the crew rounded up desktop microphone stands, which had mostly fallen into disuse.
Distancing While Convening
The evolution of the INSIGHTS ON PBS HAWAI‘I seating arrangement: The original one-table set-up, from February; the “V” configuration, from March 19; the individual tables, with one guest via computer screen, from April 16

The following week, more tables appeared, all small – and every participant, host and guests, had his or her own table.
Meantime, our production team worked hard to keep a safe environment by disinfecting surfaces.
By then, COVID-19 had become the program’s ongoing subject, with discussions reviewing and reflecting on how Hawai‘i is dealing with this devastating situation, how we can do better, and what’s next.
Our regular volunteers at the phone bank followed government guidelines and sheltered at home. Staffers at this “essential” media operation replaced the volunteers.
However, when forum guests were given the option of participating in person or virtually, most still wanted to be physically present. Pictured above: the guests on April 16, with only State Schools Superintendent Dr. Christina Kishimoto appearing by way of a computer screen.
The following week (after the printing deadline for this publication), all guests were scheduled to appear by way of the Internet: the Mayors of four Hawai‘i counties.
So, over these fast-moving weeks of community changes tied to COVID-19, our INSIGHTS program went mostly virtual.
And no matter where guests are seated, INSIGHTS is still bringing together participants and perspectives. The program continues to live up to its goal, which is:
Convening diverse voices in a trusted space for greater community knowledge and understanding.
Aloha nui and be well,
... in This Time of COVID-19

Rapa Nui, also known as Easter Island, is the most remote inhabited island in the Pacific Ocean. How does this island community balance its economic boom of tourism with the fragility of its indigenous culture and environment? That’s the question that native Rapanui filmmaker Sergio Mata‘u Rapu explores in the INDEPENDENT LENS film Eating Up Easter, premiering on PBS Hawai‘i on Monday, May 25 at 9:00 pm. This film, a presentation of Pacific Islanders in Communications and the Independent Television Service (ITVS) was completed in 2018, before COVID-19 travel restrictions.
The catalyst for the film came in 2011 when Rapu read a news article about food security in Hawai‘i, which got him thinking about Rapa Nui, his birthplace. “As I learned more about how little food we [on Rapa Nui] grew because building cabins for tourists was more lucrative, and how much we imported contributed heavily to the buildup of trash on the island, I realized that our story was not in food security, but in the rapid development of a tiny island in the middle of the Pacific,” Rapu says.
Rapu introduces four Native Islanders and the actions they are taking to preserve their culture and environment amidst rapid development. A local ecologist leads recycling efforts to tackle the mounting trash arriving with tourists and the waves of plastic washing up on shore. Two musicians struggle
Piru Huke, affectionately known as “Mama Piru,” was a cultural icon and community leader who mobilized coastal cleanups and motivated businesses to recycle.

to build a free music school they hope will preserve cultural practices. And Rapu’s father, who was the Island’s first native Governor, attempts to balance traditions against the advantages of development while building a mini-mall to serve the local residents in the Island’s main town.
Rapu says that while Eating up Easter is a film directed at visitors to Rapa Nui, with the intent of raising awareness of the impact and effect that they are having on the island, it also can bring up larger conversations on protecting the environment for current and future generations.
Engineer and musician Enrique Icka (right) works on building a sustainable cultural center and music school using recyclable materials.

Episode 1: Breaking Ground Monday, May 11, 8:00-9:00 pmImmigrants arrive from China, India, Japan, the Philippines and beyond. Barred by anti-Asian laws, they become America’s first “undocumented immigrants.” They take their fight for equality to the U.S. Supreme Court.
Episode 2: A Question of Loyalty Monday, May 11, 9:00-10:00 pm An American-born generation’s loyalties are tested during World War II, when families are imprisoned in detention camps, and brothers find themselves on opposite sides of the battle lines.
Episode 3: Good Americans Tuesday, May 12, 8:00-9:00 pm During the Cold War years, Asian Americans are simultaneously heralded as a model minority and targeted as the perpetual foreigner. But during this time, they aspire for the first time to national political office.
Episode 4: Generation Rising Tuesday, May 12, 9:00-10:00 pmDuring the time of the Vietnam War and social tumult, a young generation fights for equality in the fields, on campuses and in the culture, and claim a new identity: Asian Americans.
Episode 5: Breaking Through Tuesday, May 12, 10:00-11:00 pm At the turn of the millennium, a new generation of Asian Americans are empowered by growing numbers and rising influence but face a reckoning of what it means to be an American.

Follow Papua New Guinea’s first national women’s rugby league team, the PNG Orchids, on its journey to the 2017 World Cup in Australia. These trailblazers must beat not only the sporting competition, but also intense sexism, a lack of funding and national prejudice.
Proud, strong and hopeful, these women have overcome more challenges than most to take the field in their much-loved national sport. But after years of playing at the grassroots level with no coaches, funding or support, they have just three months to
transform themselves into a competitive national team to take up an invitation to compete on the world stage.
Now in its ninth season, the anthology series PACIFIC HEARTBEAT brings the authentic Pacific – people, cultures, language and contemporary issues – to your screen. The series is a production of Pacific Islanders in Communication in partnership with PBS Hawaiʻi and is distributed nationally by American Public Television.

But music wasn’t his only career, as he kept a day job while playing with the group. Learn how Hawaiian music was an inherent part of his life from his early years – and how he got his nickname.
