DUST ‘EM DEVILS!

Breakfast Discussion with David Gergen

Directors of TAMIU’s Office of Institutional Advancement had

a moment to meet with David R. Gergen, Director for the

Center of Public Leadership at the Harvard Kennedy School and

CNN Senior Political Analyst. Proceeds of the event went

towards scholarships for TAMIU Students attending the 2011

Harvard Latino Leadership Institute.

Monday, April 25

March 23 was a day to recognize Donors that are ALL4TAMIU by stopping as a

student body to say ―Thank You!‖. Students’ tuition covers only 23% of the

cost of education at TAMIU. 39% is covered by gifts to the University through

ALL4TAMIU from alumni, faculty and staff, friends, grants, research and

contracts and 38% is support from the State of Texas. March 23 marked the

day in the spring semester when the gifts to the University began to cover the

costs associated with education and a day to simply say ―THANK YOU

ALL4TAMIU!‖

Thank You Day was a huge success! We thank those who signed our Thank

You Card for expressing gratitude to donors of the ALL4TAMIU Fund and

investing in TAMIU students!

Thank You Day

Grace Lopez, „74 „82

Grace is a veteran educator and counselor, with a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Secondary

Education and a minor in Business from TAMIU. She did not let her accomplishments go to waste.

She worked as an instructor and counselor at several schools such as J.B. Alexander & United High

Schools, and Trautmann & D.D. Hachar Elementary Schools, later retiring in 2008 after 33 years of

working for UISD.

Even after retirement Ms. Lopez is working part-time for LCC’s Teacher Certification Program as a

Field Supervisor and Independent Study course adjunct faculty.

She enjoys gardening, outdoors, traveling when she has a chance, and spending time with family

during grilling parties and any excuse to get together. She also participates in a Women’s bible

study group at Grace Bible Church.

Kavita Idnani-Ramos, „04

Kavita enjoys her position as Human Resources Manager at

Target, where she has held her title since 2005. She also has

previous Human Resources experience working for the City

of Laredo for 5 years. On her spare time she enjoys watching

movies, spending time with her family and bike riding.

―My biggest accomplishment is obtaining my degree and

getting selected as a Human Resources Manager at Target. I

love my job and how it gives me a sense of fulfillment to help

others and to be a resource to them.‖

Mrs. Idnani-Ramos graduated from TAMIU in 2004 with a

Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration. She then furthered her education with a Master’s

Degree in Human Resources from Ashford University.

Lincoln in Laredo

Lincoln: The Constitution and

Civil War is an exhibition

traveling to only 50 sites

nationwide and TAMIU will be

among those sites beginning April

14 and ending May 18, 2011. This

exhibit explores the struggles faced

by President Lincoln to meet the

constitutional challenges of the

Civil War and reconciling his policy

preferences with basic American

ideals of liberty and equality. It also

generates an understanding of Lincoln as a president dealing with the secession of Southern

states from the Union and issues regarding slavery and wartime civil liberties.

The exhibition includes informative themed panels including ―The Civil War as a

Constitutional Crisis,‖ ―Secession,‖ ―Slavery,‖ ―Civil Liberties,‖ and ―Legacy.‖ All panels

feature photographic reproductions of original documents, including a draft of Lincoln’s first

inaugural speech, the Emancipation Proclamation, and the Thirteenth Amendment.

TAMIU is offering free programs and other events in connection with the exhibition; all of

which will be free of charge and open to the public.

Texas A&M International University will remember

fallen alumni, students, faculty and staff at the first ever

―Celebration of Life‖ memorial observation Wednesday,

April 13 at 6:30pm at the Center for the Fine and

Performing Arts Recital Hall.

The occasion affords the University an opportunity to

pause and reflect on those who have shared their lives

with the University over the past 41 years.

TAMIU Director of Alumni Relations, Yelitza Howard, said ―We’ve developed this event to

become an annual observation where we can simply come together as a University

community and as community at large to remember those who are no longer with us, to

celebrate their lives and to move forward together.‖

As this is the first year of the event, the University is encouraging all those who have lost a

member of their family affiliated with the University since 1970 as a student, graduate of

faculty/staff member at the time of their death to be part of the event.

The University plans to present the Celebration of Life every year to remember those who

have passed on the previous year.

The Big Event

Over 300 TAMIU student volunteers helped in the 3rd Annual ―Big Event‖ on March 26. This event served to beautify Laredo by cleaning up Slaughter Park in South Laredo. Thanks to

everyone for helping keep Laredo beautiful and clean!!!

Attention Students and Alumni! If you have

Ceremony will be held this spring.

The opportunity to wear the Official TAMIU

Ring represents a great accomplishment in

the wearers’ educational careers. In the

ceremony, Students and Alumni who ordered

their rings by Grad Fair will be presented

their rings; the student/alumnus will then dip their ring in water from our Acequia Fountain

which graces our beautiful campus. The fountain’s shape symbolizes the key to success, and

students the dipping of their ring in water from the fountain is a symbol of continued success.
