need additional treatments during the summer. If you have been treating for liver fluke and there is no improvement, then you need to ask your veterinarian or animal health technician for help.

PREVENTION

Where possible, fence off vleis, streams and dams to stop the goats going there. Fence off the pastures that are free of fluke from those that are not. The pastures that are known to give liver fluke problems should be grazed only in the winter months, when the fluke numbers are much lower.

word: Bloeding in die lewer. Verdikte galbuise in die lewer. Ferm, ligter dele in die lewer (fibriose). Lewerslakke in die galbuise.

BEHANDELING

VACCINATION

The following schedule should be seen as a guide only. Consult a veterinarian for a specific immunization programme for your goats. Follow the specific recommendations of the manufacturer when using any vaccine. Pay special attention to recommendations regarding the use of the vaccines in pregnant goats.

The first step to identifying a deficiency is to see if your soil is deficient in selenium. You can also contact your local extension agent and ask about selenium levels. Soil levels under .5 ppm are considered deficient.

Selenium Deficiency in Goat Kids

Selenium deficiency in kids is most commonly seen as white muscle disease. The muscles in their legs are too weak to support their weight and they end up unable to walk or walking on their ankles. Other symptoms of selenium deficient kids are:

• Being too weak to suckle• Coughing/aspirating milk• weak immune system and development of

pneumonia due to weak lungs

The main thing to remember is, that if you have a kid born who is weak and unable to stand- especially if their ankles are bending back- then you are dealing with selenium/vitamin E deficiency and they need treatment immediately and help eating until they are strong enough to stand on their own.

Selenium Deficiency in Adult Goats

Selenium deficiency in adult goats is most commonly seen in reproductive problems. This means that they:

• Have poor conception rates• Experience abortions, stillbirths, and miscarriages• Retained placentas• Deliver weak, selenium deficient kids

How to Treat Selenium Deficiency in Goats

As part of your normal feeding schedule, you should always have loose minerals available to your goats. This will help in prevention of a lot of deficiency. If you live in a selenium deficient area you will need to

How to identifySELENIUM DEFICIENCY IN GOATS

supplement selenium throughout the year to keep your goats at a good level of this nutrient.

If you live in a selenium deficient area, you should keep a bottle of BoSe on hand to treat deficient goats. We give ours a shot of BoSe at the beginning of every breeding season, to help with conception, pregnancy and delivery of healthy kids. We also use this product to treat any kids born deficient and they are usually back on their feet within a day. BoSe is available by prescription only, so talk to your vet.

Our area is severely deficient, so we also dose our herd orally with a Selenium/Vitamin E gel every 3-4 months as well. I keep track of this in my goat management binder so that I don’t forget to give them their supplements.

The tricky part comes with dosing correctly. Goats need selenium in the amount of .2 ppm. The toxic level of selenium is 3 ppm. Unfortunately, selenium toxicity often has many of the same symptoms of deficiency. Countries with high selenium levels in their soil need to be careful dosing their goats with

selenium-containing products.

Nurture foryour nature

Taking care of goats

For those who are just starting out with small stock farming, it may at first seem to be quite a daunting task. How do you begin going about it? What are the key things you need to know? And where might you turn for more information or even advice? Whether for commercial purposes or simply for one’s own direct benefit, there’s much to learn and understand, and raising meat goats is no different.

Raising meat goats can be a very exciting and rewarding experience, but can also be very challenging. With a bit of preparation and appreciation for the nutritional needs of goats, even the newest farmer can raise happy, healthy, and indeed fattened goats. While raising meat goats can be different than raising sheep or cattle for meat, it is still a grueling process that takes time, patience, energy, and dedication – all the qualities inherent in a good farmer.

Good management and nutrition can mask poor or mediocre genetics, whilst poor management and nutrition can mask good genetics. Goats that look better aren’t always better goats! - Faheem Kala

nutrition before twelve months of age. A weaned doeling (ewe lamb) under poor nutritional conditions from six to twelve months of age with the same body weight at eighteen months of age as a doeling under good nutritional conditions from six to twelve months, has a lower kidding percentage at the age of two years.

‘’It is important to feed an animal when it is young as this is when the muscle development, bone density and immune system are developing; i.e. it will become a strong, healthy and productive animal. One can start the animals on creep feed as early as a couple of weeks up to weaning. Weaning will then as a result, take place early, taking the stress off the mother with the young animal being able to cope in our sometimes very harsh conditions. Please ensure that you use a good quality creep feed (for your young goats),’’ says Felicity Julia Hunter, an Animal Nutritionist at Technofeeds in Botswana.

A study by Jan Hoon, a small-stock specialist at Grootfontein Agricultural Development Institute at Middelburg in the Upper Karoo, showed that supplementing the diet of replacement doelings on veld from weaning to first mating can boost their production and reproduction. Further, said Dr. Johan van Rooyen of the Grootfontein Agricultural Development Institute, “If you’re not giving supplementary feed to your pregnant does, you should at least provide a mineral lick. They are usually called phosphate licks, but read the label carefully and make sure you are getting the other minerals and trace elements.”

Now, “How does one water and feed their goat?” you may wonder. After all, good feeding and plenty of clean

water are important to help your goat stay healthy. A goat obtains most of the nutrients it needs from grazing. Ideally it needs to spend 6-8 hours a day grazing and browsing.

In the dry season, the quality of the

food available decreases and it is important to provide some supplementary food to the animals especially

Goats are very energetic and burn a lot of calories through running around, so finding the right balance of nutrition to keep them gaining weight can be a challenge for even the most experienced farmer. ‘’Nutrition is one of the three legs upon which any successful livestock breeding is based, along with top genetics and good animal health. Better genetics will perform better and you will see a better end product. Goats require specific supplementation at strategic times of the production cycle in order to perform efficiently. Good management practices and a correct feeding, supplement & vaccination schedule can aid in a more profitable and fruitful farming operation,’’ says Johan Steyn of Patriot Boer Goats.

Similarly, says, Dr. Jasper Coetzee of Stellenbosch, South Africa, on reproduction, ‘’To obtain maximum profit from livestock farming, the genetic reproduction and production potential of the animals must be fully unlocked.”

Kalahari Reds & Boer Goats are both excellent and hardy breeds with good feed conversation ratios, and they thrive well in an intensive or semi-intensive project, just as much as they do in an extensive farming operation. Nutrition of the doe, from the foetal stage until maturity, may influence its reproductive performance by affecting the time, age, fertility and fecundity at the first oestrus. A young doe under good nutritional conditions for the first twelve months of life has a higher ovulation rate at first mating, as well as higher lifetime reproduction potential.

Remember, poor nutrition six months before mating can often lead to poor conception and a lower fecundity rate (fertility), despite the animal being in excellent condition at mating. Good nutrition during the mature stage of the ewe’s life does not compensate for poor

if they are in late pregnancy or early lactation. Clean water should be available at all times. This is especially important when the goats have kids which they are suckling. Offer water at least 4 times a day if it is not freely available all throughout the day.

When it comes to supplementary feeding, animals need both energy and protein to keep healthy. Conserved forage can be provided to supplement grazing in the dry season. Legume forages are best as they are high in protein as well as energy. Ideally, the supplementary feed should contain at least 4 types of forage to ensure a balanced diet. Concentrate feeds can be given as a supplement (about 400g per day for an adult non-pregnant goat). Feed a mixture of 2-3 different types of concentrate to make sure there is a balance of energy and protein. A spoon of salt and mineral and vitamin mix should be added to the supplementary feed provided to make sure requirements for vitamins and minerals are met.

Concentrate feeds that are high in energy are maize, barley, brewers’ grains and cotton seed oil cake meal. Feeds that are high in protein include fishmeal, soya bean meal, cotton seed oil cake meal and brewers’ grains. A urea-molasses block for the animals to lick provides them with a good source of nitrogen and energy which helps them digest forage better, especially in the dry season. According to the South African Boer Goat Breeders’ Association, it should be put in a container off the floor in the goat house so all goats can lick it as and when they like.

A goat’s nutritional requirements can be met by feeding a variety of different feed stuffs. The feed can vary dependent on your vegetation and grazing. Goats require energy, protein, vitamins, minerals, quality fiber and fresh clean water which is very important! It is vital that your goat’s nutritional needs are met for you to see optimum results. Don’t be stingy now and then regret later! Nutritional needs vary at the different stages of the goat’s production cycle.

Goat feeding programmes should take into account the animal requirements (at the different stages of its life/production), feed availability and costs. Faheem Kala of Bushra Kalahari Reds & Boer Goats advises that farmers make it a point to work in close conjunction with a feed or nutritional specialist on what the best feeding programme for their goat herd is. Says Kala, “It is important to manage your nutrition, i.e. feeding strategy, to your animals in order to maintain a clean disease environment through enough protein intake. Underfeeding delays sexual maturity of your animals. Vitamins deficiencies can lead to abortions, weak or dead kids. Let us prevent most of the complications through a good nutritional management plan.”

According to farmer & agricultural author, Roelof Bezuidenhout of South Africa, ‘’In livestock farming, the most important money-making factor is probably body condition. Thus, nutrition is even more important than the quality of the animal. You can buy the most

beautiful show-type animals, but if you don’t feed them enough and keep them healthy, their good genetics will mean nothing.”

‘’If ewes (does) receive too few minerals and energy during lambing (kidding), the birth process will commence, but the ewe will not force the lamb (kid) out and its head will swell up into the birth canal. Farmers often accuse good nutrition and believe the lambs (kids) are too big, while it is actually poor nutrition that delays the birthing process,” comments Johan Eyssen.

How much should you feed your goats? Nutritional requirements of goats can vary depending on life stage, activity level, pregnancy, lactation and breed. Increased production demands will also cause an increase in nutritional demands. Generally, your goats will eat 3-4% of their body weight in feed of which at least 1% should be good quality roughage.

Because of this wide range of nutritional needs, when feeding supplement concentrates or grains, read the label on goat feed bags for suggested feeding quantities. Consult a veterinarian, nutritionist or feed specialist who is familiar with your goat’s breed and the quality of forage in your area. Also consider that meat production goats have different nutritional needs than milk production goats. Care should be taken to avoid feeding goats too much. Obese animals have lower reproduction rates and are more subject to arthritis. “Adequate green feed, vitamins, concentrates, minerals, water, and a balanced diet is the key to success of a goat farming enterprise. Nutrition and genetics are vitally important when breeding meat goats,” says Kala.

The amount of nutrition a buck receives affects the ability for the reproductive system of a buck to produce healthy, viable semen. A malnourished buck is unable to effectively service as many does during a breeding season; and the semen he produces is lower in quality and has less potency, therefore unable to fertilize eggs waiting in the doe during breeding time. Proper nutrition allows for the production of strong virile semen that is able to survive in the reproductive tract of a doe and swim all the way to meet those eggs waiting in the fallopian tubes. “Healthy bucks are also able to comfortably serve more does,” notes Kala.

SA BOER GOAT | News 2018 | Nr 26

Nutritional intake and quality feeds affects the ability for a goat to reproduce. A malnourished doe is more likely to birth singles and less likely produce twins or triplets. The reason being without adequate nutrition the ovaries (inside the reproductive system of a doe) do not produce as many eggs or healthy eggs if the doe is undernourished. When the semen from a buck enters the reproductive tract of a doe there are fewer eggs to be fertilized, and the eggs that do exist may not be healthy enough to be fertilized.

Now, last but not least, it is key to understand the importance of feeding in the late gestation period, i.e. the last six weeks prior to kidding. Late gestation is probably the most critical period for ewe and doe nutrition. Ewes and does will gain weight during this phase of production. 70% of foetal growth occurs during this period. Mammary tissue is also developing. Proper nutrition is necessary to prevent pregnancy toxemia (ketosis) and milk fever (low blood calcium). A good size for a lamb is a little more than 3.5kg at birth. The uterus, placenta and fluids weigh about 1kg, which gives you an approximate total of 5kg. So, the single (one kid) carrying doe (ewe) should pick up at least 5kg in the last six weeks of pregnancy! As a rule of thumb, a twin-carrying does needs to pick up about 10kg, and a triplet-carrying mother should gain 15kg during this crucial time in the does breeding cycle!

There is a direct relation between poor nutrition and higher mortality rates on the farm.

Nutrition affects the birth weights of your kids. There is a higher death rate among small and large kids when good feed in not provided. On the other hand, oversized foetuses increase dystocia (birthing difficulties). Aim for a body condition of 3.0 to 3.5. Young females should be fed separately from mature females. In addition to gestating, they are still growing and have higher nutritional requirements. Oftentimes, they have difficulty competing for feeder space with mature females who would bully the younger does who in turn do not get to eat well as a result. Having enough feeders or feeding troughs in the kraals also goes a long way in ensuring each of the goats acquire

the correct amount of feed without having to fight or compete for space with the goats in the herd.

Feed is the single largest cost associated with raising meat goats. It has a large influence on herd reproduction, milk production and kid growth. Late-gestation and lactation are the most critical periods for doe nutrition. Nutrition level determines kid growth rate. Goats receiving inadequate diets are more prone to disease and will fail to reach their genetic potential. This can lead to your goat breeding project not to be financially viable. Forward planning is essential in both a commercial and stud goat farming operation.

Energy (calories) is usually the most limiting nutrient, whereas protein is the most expensive. Deficiencies, excesses and imbalances of vitamins and minerals can limit animal performance and lead to various health problems. Fibre is necessary to maintain a healthy rumen environment and prevent digestive disturbances. Water is the cheapest feed ingredient and often the most neglected! Fresh clean water is vital in good goat nutrition! After all, “Nutritional intake and quality feeds affects the ability for a goat to reproduce. A malnourished doe is more likely to birth singles and less likely produce twins or triplets,” shares Kala. Felicity Hunter re-iterates this point mentioning that “Feeding animals is a must for better returns.” This could not be any truer!

One cannot overemphasise the importance of sound nutrition for your livestock, and when it comes to your goats, nurture is paramount. Remember, do your research and do not shy away from the advice of many a veteran farmer who stands to help you a great deal with their experience. Take care of your goats, and the yields will no doubt be plentiful!

Sale report 2017

The annual EP Dorper Club Ram Sale & Quattro Boergoat sale was held at the Willowmore Showgrounds on Wednesday 11th October. This year a Persian Ram & Ewe sale was added to make it very much a one stop shop for many farmers. The sale exceeded everybody’s expectations and there was a keen interest on all lots. The ongoing drought had cast a cloud of doom over the sale but the quality of the animals and the buoyant sheep, lamb and goat prices being realized at present helped to show up prices. In actual fact the Dorper Ram prices were the highest ever achieved on this auction. Nearly half the Dorper rams were bought by buyers from Grahamstown, Alexandria, Paterson & Uitenhage, whilst the Boergoat rams were sold into the more traditional goat areas.

SOUND NAMPO ATTENDANCE SHOWS FARMERS STILL HAVE HOPE!

A new record attendance figure was reached during NAMPO 2018 and the feedback from exhibitors that they mostly did good business, conveys the agriculture sector’s optimism in spite of all the uncertainties facing the South African producers.

This is the opinion of Jannie de Villiers, executive chief director of Grain SA at the end of the organisation’s 52nd NAMPO Harvest Day that had been successfully presented. According to ticket sales, 82 817 visitors poured through the gates to visit the 746 exhibitors and to enjoy the familial atmosphere and farm hospitality so typical to the Harvest Day. NAMPO Park’s private aerodrome comfortably accommodated 361 light aircraft and helicopters that brought a variety of visitors.

“The growing interest in our Boer Goat stall is encouraging and it proves that the boer goat industry is vital and surging forward. To all the Boer Goat, Kalahari

NATIONALAGRICULTURAL SHOW

2018 proved to be yet another strong year for the Kalahari Reds in Botswana, with the number of local breeders as well as the quality of animals being kept getting stronger with every passing month. The cherry on the proverbial cake? A Kalahari Red took home the Grand Champion of the Yard gong once again – indeed for the third consecutive year – at this year’s National Agricultural Show, hosted at Sebele Showgrounds in the capital city of Gaborone from 20th August to 25th August 2018. That’s right – it’s been a hat-trick of wins for the Kalahari Reds in 2016, 2017 and 2018!

“FJ,” a 148kg Kalahari Red stud buck belonging to Faheem Kala of Bushra Stud, was crowned this year’s Champion at what was incredible showing for Kalahari Reds. FJ was in fact the first locally studded goat back in October 2016 on the Bushra farm inspected by Johnny Henderson. This year’s National Show saw 28 goat exhibitors showing 240 goats. This included 75 Kalahari Reds in stiff competition, with a total of 7 Kalahari Red breeders from across 4 Botswana districts having exhibited at the National Show. Breeders included Hennie Schutte, Oletile Tsalaile, Chris Koosentse, Sethula Sethula, Keabetswe Molebatsi, Charles Seshane

and Faheem Kala. A wonderful surprise for all was one of the stud Kalahari Red does giving birth to twins, adding even more happiness to the already jovial atmosphere.

His Excellency the President of the Republic of Botswana, Mogkweetsi E.K Masisi, official opened the Show along with the First Lady, Neo Jane Masisi. Also in attendance was Botswana’s Minister of Agriculture, Honourable Patrick Pule Ralotsia and Guest Speaker, Ivor Queally, Director of QK Meat SA. The President applauded all in attendance, and took time to visit many of the exhibitor stalls, including those of the Kalahari Red breeders. His Excellency spoke to the local breeders on techniques and tips to help ensure strong, healthy Kalahari Reds, noting he in fact has some on his own farm.

In his keynote address, Mr. Queally also recognised the role of agriculture in Botswana’s economy. “It’s great to see that Botswana attaches such great importance to the Agricultural sector... I believe agriculture offers great opportunities for the creation of jobs in Botswana.”

Judges this year for goats in the small stock classes included Koenie Kotze, Theuns Botha, Bertie Aucamp

and Johnny Henderson. The judges, true to best form in any small stock judging efforts, had a tough selection from which to choose, and gave it their very best, most discipline critique.

When it came to the goats, however, Bushra Stud made a historic clean sweep, taking every Champions Class prize they were eligible for as well as every Reserve Champion title. This followed a series of successes at District Agricultural Shows across Botswana, totaling 17 consecutive district shows in the past 3 years. Kala walked away with all Champion Class prizes, including the most coveted title of Grand Champion of the Yard. Bushra’s Kalahari Reds &Boer Goats also took the awards for Champion Milk Tooth Doe, Reserve Champion Milk Tooth Doe, Champion Junior Doe, Reserve Champion Junior Doe, Champion Senior Doe, Reserve Champion Senior Doe, Champion Milk Tooth Buck, Reserve Champion Milk Tooth Buck, Champion Junior Buck, Reserve Champion Junior Buck, Champion Senior Buck and Reserve Champion Senior Buck: Faheem Kala was also The Breeder with the Most Points and the Breeder of Champions, with the Best Handler on Show as Sethula Sethula of Bushra Stud, also highly passionate about goats. Bushra Stud also walked away with the Grand Champions with their stunning Kalahari Reds at the Lentsweletau, South-East District, Kweneng District, Moshupa and Kanye Shows this year.

Said Koenie Kotze, one of the Judges on Show, ‘’I have been year for three years now and every year the quality of smallstock is improving.’’ With regards to the Reserve Junior Champion of the Yard, a 4 and a half month old Boer Goat doeling bred by Bushra Stud, Kotze commented, ‘’On looking at the young female, to me it is like looking at a Bible Verse (it is so perfect and correct).’’ The doeling was also the youngest ever Champion Goat in Botswana’s history!

Botswana National Show judges: Bertie Aucamp, Koenie Kotze, Johnny Henderson & Theuns Botha

If it was not already clear enough, Kalahari Reds rule in every possible way, and this year’s National Agricultural Show was no different in Botswana. Well done to all the Botswana Kalahari Red breeders for flying our Reds flag high!
