A Note From the Head Teacher

The students at Friars have once again been amazing with their commitment to learning and their ability to try new activities. We have had a busy term which finished with a very successful careers week. Thank you to everyone that has supported Friars with this week in any way.

Looking forward to another great term. Mrs Ijewsky

No. 108 March 2020

Safer Internet Day: 11th February 2020

Safer Internet Day aims to inspire a national conversation about using technology responsi-bly, respectfully and creatively. It promotes positive uses of technology for children and young people and explores the role that we all play in helping to create a better and safer online community for everyone every day.

All classes took part in an assembly about eSafety. Some focused on the use of avatars to keep their identity safe and others focused on the theme of #freetobe so that they felt com-fortable being who they are and not feeling like they have to make things up.

Please take a moment to remind yourselves about current online safety issues using the links found on our academy website.

Friars Academy are pleased to announce a new addition to our 'about us' section on the school website: we now have an intervention page.

This will help us to have better communication with you, if you feel that your young person is struggling and would benefit from some extra non educational support.

We have a small team based in school, that will work with you, and outside professionals if necessary, to obtain the best outcomes. Please get in touch if you need our assistance.

Friday 7th February 2020 was ‘Number Day’ at Friars. Students got involved with Number Activities around the Academy and enjoyed participating in many challenges and competitions, including treasure hunts, mazes, codebreakers and ‘Who wants to be a Mathionaire?’ Number fun was had in all sub-

ject areas throughout the day. Some staff wore a number on their clothes and all students took part in an enjoyable ‘Teacher Sums’ competition. There was quite a buzz around the Academy with students going around to find the answers!

All classes participated in a ‘Countdown’ numbers competition too, with many arriving at the target number within the 30 seconds. All activities contributed points to the houses and the results for Number Day 2020 are:

1st place: Pankhurst

2nd place: Shakespeare

3rd place: Nightingale

4th place: Tull

Here are the results for term three:

Monday 10th February—Friday 14th February 2020

Students have had opportunities to learn from employers about work, employment and the skills that are valued in the workplace. This year 25 companies/people engaged with us, including the army, the fire service, a special effects artist, Amazon, a fresh fruit and veg supplier, a DJ and a speaker from Aston Martin!

We have had lessons, visitors into the Academy and trips out. We also had a focus on jobs for the future. Everyone took part with great interest and enthusi-asm.

A number of compliments were given about how well-mannered and respectful our students are and what interesting, thoughtful questions they asked.

Well done everyone!

This term Eco-warriors have discussed ways they would like students at Friars to think about the resources we use and often waste. The Eco-

warriors have asked students to bring in clothes they no longer need so we can donate them to the Air Ambulance.

9AW have been very productive with this challenge and we have had a range of items donated, from children’s clothes to summer dresses.

Watch out for what the Eco-warriors are up to next term!

RED JANUARY

Throughout January, a month that can traditionally be tough after the festive period, we at Friars kicked off the new decade by embarking upon 'Red January'. Many students and staff took part in the initiative which encourages people to do something active every day in Jan-uary to chase away the blues.

The 'Red January' initiative is partnered with the mental health charity, 'Mind' and has so far raised almost £3 million!

We were very lucky to have Red January founder, Han-nah Beecham join us for an assembly and take part in our inaugural 'Red Run' . This saw practi-cally every student and

member of staff take part in a run/walk in support.

Thank you to everyone for supporting this amazing initia-tive, staff for organising their own activities and in particu-lar, Mr Hurt for bringing it all together.

Friars Academy Theatre Trips

In January, students from Friars Academy had the opportunity to see performances at two local theatres. Some students in year 11 went to see An Inspector Calls at the Milton Keynes Theatre and two classes from year 8 went to see Holes at the Royal and Derngate in Northampton. The students thoroughly enjoyed both performances and they were a credit to the Academy.

Competitions and Leadership

This term Friars became the district Boccia champions! They will now go on to the Win-ter School Games on February 24th. The Friars Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 foot-ball teams played fantastically well in a tour-nament in Kettering this term, with the Key Stage 4 students placing as runners up! One pupil remarked “this has been my most fa-vourite day at Friars yet”.

Within the school, we have had interhouse competitions for basketball, dodgeball and uni-hoc to encourage everyone to get active and to have fun doing it!

Well done to all involved with organizing, par-ticipating or supporting each of our sports competitions and leadership opportunities.

After School Clubs

At Friars Academy we offer a number of FREE after school sports clubs for stu-dents to attend. Attending after school clubs not only extends students learning to improve their physical skills, it also benefits and improves social skills, fitness levels and emotional well-being. The after school clubs we offer are: Archery

Girls Fitness

Tag Sports (Tag Rugby, American Football, Capture the Flag)

Football Girls Club

Fitness

Yoga

Please request a letter in your child's home school communication book if they are interested in attending one of the clubs.

P.E. Uniform

Just a reminder that all students should be wearing the Academy red and black polo shirt for PE lessons with either black shorts or trousers. Students should also have trainers not plimsolls as some lessons take place out-side. As we are still experiencing some days with colder weather, we would advise that students have trousers and a plain black jumper to wear for PE as a number of lessons will continue to take place outside, weather permitting.
