Being the Nursing Home Administrator, I am afforded a few
luxuries that bring me great pleasure. Besides the love that I
receive every day from the residents, I do slightly enjoy
having fun with (torturing) my staff. So, from February 12th

A note from the Administrator
Like us on Facebook
through February 23rd, we participated in Staff Olympics. This was open to all
employees and was totally voluntary. The only requirements were that they had to
have six team members and at least one of them needed to be male. In all, we had
six teams: Team Laprairie, Olympic Gold Medal, Team QAPI, Wolfe Pack, Team
Black and the Cellar Dwellers.
During these two weeks, we constructed team flags, decorated wheelchairs &
walkers Mardi Gras style and played Presidential trivia. Some of the more enjoyable
challenges were the “Coworker Newlywed Game”, outdoor dodgeball competition,
wheelchair slalom races and a snowman building contest.
For my viewing pleasure, the teams enjoyed a lively elephant march competition, in
which they were required to knock over cones with a tennis ball that was in the leg of
pantyhose, which they wore on their head (see below). Another fantastic challenge
to observe was the Chinese New Year race, in which each participant dressed like a
dog and had to carry an egg on a spoon with their mouths as they raced around the
activity room (also below).
Our Olympic challenge concluded with a talent contest
that was “Raining Men”, twirling flags and reuniting us
with the Backstreet Boys. Congratulations to Team
Laprairie for bringing home the gold!!
Congratulations to our February Employee of the month, Joanne Durrum!
Per Beth Gillis, her supervisor, "Joanne is a very hard working person and
has been here 11 years in the Laundry/ Housekeeping Department. She
attends to the residents' clothing as well as general linen. She goes above
and beyond her job, and is well liked by both co-workers and residents.”
GREAT WORK, JOANNE!
& Kaitlyn Potter, LPN, our March Employee of the Month, most often found
working on Midtown. Kaitlyn got her start here in October 2016 as an LPN
straight out of nursing school. She jumped right in and learned ‘the ropes’
quickly. In the meantime she has enrolled in RN school and is currently
working here per diem. Per Erin Gillis, Nursing Staff Coordinator, Kaitlyn is
very patient with and devoted to our residents as well as hard-working and
an excellent team player.

Amelia ‘Millie’ Bolio was born in 1917 to a large farming family in Indian Lake, but later moved to
Easton, Washington County, NY. She is youngest and last remaining of 14 siblings! As a teen, she
double-dated with her sister and her beau, then eventually married William ‘Bill’ Bolio on November
16, 1935. They were married 65 years before he passed. Together they raised four children, mainly in
South Glens Falls.
Millie was a professional homemaker and quite crafty. She was well-known in the greater community
for her fine quilting and crocheted afghans. She gave these away as gifts at weddings, baby showers
showwersshowers, or to students leaving for college.
Anna hails from Silver Lake, Missouri where she grew up on a farm as one of seven
siblings. As a teenager, she moved to California with a girlfriend and while at a community
dance, she met a handsome fellow, Rupert McFadden, a Fort Edward native. Rupert fell
head-over-heels in love with Anna, but with the onset of WWII, he was soon shipped off to
the South Pacific with the U.S. Marines. During WWII Anna worked in an ammunition
factory putting together bullets, a very dangerous job. She was a real ‘Rosie Riveter’!
After many love letters and Rupert’s return to the States, Anna and Rupert got married
and to students going away to college. Additionally, Millie was very involved with Durkeetown Baptist Church as a Sunday
school teacher, Bible Study leader, and refreshment provider. Her nickname was ‘Aunt Cookie’ and her best friend’s nick-
in St. Louis MO on Sept. 13th, 1946 and remained married for 51 years. He found work in the Pacific Northwest with the U.S.
Army Corps of Engineers and so they re-located there for about 10 years, before returning to Missouri, then to Washington
County, NY. Together they raised two daughters, Linda and Bonnie. Anna was known as an excellent seamstress and worked
for a number of years at the shirt factory in Glens Falls. She made beautiful and practical clothing for her family and friends.

Anna was always a cheerful, happy matriarch who ran her family. She and Rupert loved
to go fishing and to this day, she loves a good fish dinner. Anna has always been an avid
reader and some of her favorite activities include cooking,
taking scenic rides, and sewing.
She also greatly enjoys listening to Lawrence Welk and polkas!
In later years, Anna enjoyed volunteering, especially with the
elderly. (Note: Her party time is in the planning process!)
name was ‘ Aunt Juicy’! Millie is quite the
storyteller and loves visits of all kinds (especially
animals!) We will celebrate Millie’s 101st birthday
with an Ice Cream Social on Monday March 26th at
1:30pm in the Activities Room. Argyle Middle
School Chorus will join us and sing songs from all
eras of her life.

Sometimes a story comes along that makes you want to stand up and cheer. I hear them
all the time because they take place in Centers homes everywhere. But this one caught
my attention because of some unusual circumstances. The thanks of the entire Centers
Health Care family goes out to our team at Steuben Center where it all took place.
Christina McLendon, a Navy veteran from Texas was visiting New York to attend a late September
women’s retreat. What happened to her while she was here changed her life, and a lot of lives at Steuben
Center. Christina was struck by an automobile while walking through a local parking lot and severely
injured. Her shattered leg required two separate and very complicated surgeries at Corning-Guthrie
Hospital, and extensive rehabilitation. With her 12 year old son and her husband at home in Texas,
Christina was completely alone. Then she chose Steuben Center for her rehabilitation and everything
changed.
Christina looked at her situation as an opportunity to meet new people and joined us with such an upbeat
attitude and positive outlook that she quickly became one of our most popular residents. She worked
tirelessly on her rehab and became a cheerleader for her fellow residents, giving them a needed boost
when their therapy got tough. “If I can do it, you can too” and other encouraging words backed by her bright
smile, were credited by dozens of other residents as being the tonic they needed at just the right time to
help them through their own rehab. As the holidays drew closer, when most people in her situation would
struggle with depression, Christina became even more upbeat. A welcome visit from her husband and son
at Thanksgiving helped of course, but Christina saw the holidays as just another way to bring joy into other
people’s lives. She assisted the team at Steuben by wrapping eighty presents they had purchased for their
residents, and personally delivered them to everyone on Christmas morning. As she neared the end of her
rehabilitation, she told us about all that she had gotten from her experience. “I’m looking at all that I can
take away from this” she said. “I got to meet so many
wonderful people and learn their stories. They are amazing
and I found them so inspiring. And I’ve been blown away by
the kindness and generosity of people. It’s made me
revaluate how I want to go forward in life.”
On January 30th, the Steuben Center family threw a surprise
farewell party for Christina. She will be missed by everyone,
but her story will continue to inspire other residents for a long
time to come.

Staying ahead of the curve
There are always exciting things happening in the therapy suite at every Centers facility. After all, recovery is
exciting. But this month, four of our facilities are participating in a virtual reality pilot program that may
ultimately change the therapy protocols throughout the Centers Health Care family.
Virtual reality therapy has made its way into many rehab facilities, as a way to provide low-impact workouts in
a “real world” setting. However, the set-up is often large, unwieldy, and requires extensive specialized
equipment. Now, Centers is partnering with Jintronix, a Canadian firm, to bring their breakthrough rehab
technology to our residents. Jintronix uses a sophisticated yet very compact computer and advanced motion
sensors to create a wide range of precise activities. Residents sit or stand in front of a television and the
therapist creates an exercise that appears on the screen. The resident sees his or her movements on the
screen and every motion is tracked and recorded so as the resident progresses through their rehabilitation,
their advances are documented and the sophistication of the exercises is increased. And one of the best
parts? The Jintronix system uses computer gaming technology to make the therapy fun! Residents might find
themselves skiing, playing soccer, or shooting a basketball. The games make therapy more enjoyable,
encourage longer sessions, and provide immediate positive reinforcement. Just one more way that Centers
Health Care is staying ahead of the curve.
