Stephens Convention Center Fastener Tech ’13 closed with the best records since 2007. Exhibits, attendance and seminars were up. With over 150 exhibits (list may be found on our website www.mwfa.net) and two other shows (SurFin and Amerimold) open to Fastener Tech ’13 participants, the one stop-three shows concept was well received. Fastener Tech ’13 exhibitors included manufacturers, platers, heat treaters, secondary services and other services to the fastener industry. Several Outstanding Seminars were conducted, allowing additional education experiences in many facets of the industry. Seminars/sessions included: Fastener Technology Training Workshop (presented by Fastener Training Institute), Purchasing Safeguards Seminar (presented by Mid- West Fastener Association), Seven Things you Need to Know to Succeed Now (presented by Women in the Fastener Industry), Making Fasteners from Beginning to End (presented by Fastener Technology Int’l), Trends and New Tools for an Evolving Industry (presented by FCH Sourcing Network and National Fastener Distributors Assoc.) and Institute for Trend Research (presented by National Fastener Distributors Assoc.). After these events, several people always ask the total of attendees. While attendees surpassed the last three Fastener Tech events, the most important fact was who the attendees were. One exhibitor hit it on the head stating: “I had such great leads, it doesn’t matter how many were here.” We hope all attendees were lucky enough to have this same experience. We all know there are many others who could have attended but it is important we all spread the word of important upcoming events in our industry. But for those who like numbers, there were over 1600 between attendees and exhibitors. This is confirmed attendance-not preregistrants who did not show. The social networking is always great. The All Industry Reception and meeting Fastener Friends at Rosemont’s new area- Park at Rosemont-were both fun events enjoyed by many. Thank you to all participants in Fastener Tech ’13! ! PRESIDENT'S NOTE

Matthew DelawderSWD Inc.

Let me start by sayingthank you to everyonethat displayed andattended FastenerTech. This was our secondFastener Tech to date and

we truly appreciate all of you and oursponsors for making it a success. This wasour second time co-locating with Sur/Finand by bringing the two shows togetherwe were able to have even greater appealto a wider audience. We are continuing towork with a number of other organizationsto make FastenerTech ’15 a “don’t miss”event. I’m sure we will be selling boothspaces very soon, so don’t miss youropportunity to get a great location. Weappreciate the opportunity to host ourshow along with Sur/Fin and the NFDA.One of the great opportunities I had duringthe two days was to meet and talk withpeople from all of the regional and nationalfastener associations. I believe that by

working closely together we can help makeour industry stronger.

In April, we saw a glimpse of what canhappen when different associations worktogether. Thanks to the North CoastFastener Association and Nucor, we wereable to hold a joint meeting along with theNFDA. The Nucor facility was truly amazingto see. Their staff went beyond ourexpectations and showed us all how aWorld Class operation performs. I amthankful that I was able to be a part of it.To top it off, the dinner meeting andnetworking at the Auburn CordDuesenberg Museum was outstanding.

We will be hosting two more fun eventsbefore summer ends. On July 22, theMWFA will travel to the South side to watchthe White Sox take on the Detroit Tigers. Then, on September 19, we will host ajoint meeting at Arlington Park Race Trackalong with CASMI (Chicago Association ofSpring Manufacturers, Inc.) from 11:30am –4pm. This is our first opportunity to meetwith the CASMI membership and hopefully

will be as beneficial as the other combinedmeetings we have held this year. We havebeen trying for over two years to work outa meeting schedule with the CASMI Boardthat would bring the two groups togetherand we all hope that this is anotherexample of how expanded networkingbrings our members new businessopportunities.

North Coast Fastener Association,Mid-West Fastener Association andNational Fastener DistributorsAssociation hold joint meeting

April 25th became a “road tour’ day formany fastener industry personnel as theyheaded to St. Joe Indiana to visit Nucor. In1985 Nucor decided to build a state of theart manufacturing operation and hascontinued to succeed ever since. Theyhave repeatedly been acclaimed as one ofthe top companies in the world includingmaking the Fortune 500 list since 1980.They control their manufacturing processfrom start to finish including wireprocessing (annealing/pickling), forming, heat treat, inspection, packaging andwarehousing.

Nucor graciously hosted lunch and planttours throughout the afternoon allowing anexcellent learning experience for many.Attendees were able to see production, atall stages, and view state of the artequipment. Nucor’s 500,000 sq. ft. facilitylocated on 200 acres features severalmajor pieces of equipment including onecold nut former, two hot nut formers, four

heat treat furnaces, and twenty nine boltformers (two of Five S1 National machinesin the world are housed at Nucor).

Following the tour, a dinner was held atthe Auburn Cord Duesenberg AutomobileMuseum featuring 150 Auburn, Cord andDuesenberg automobiles ranging in agefrom 1894 to 1999. The museum was opento the group, the whole evening, allowingtours at their leisure. Between the Nucortour and the evening, the NCFA, MWFA andNFDA enjoyed great industry networking.

On March 21st , the MWFA held theirannual Milwaukee meeting at LakefrontBrewery. The concept was the trials andtribulations of starting and building asuccessful business. Whether it is beer orfasteners, there are challenges. Perhapssometimes beer has the advantage in adown economy but the reality is, successhas to be built to withstand the bad times.

The group toured the brewery, did somequality control checks on the beers, determined quality was excellent andmoved on to dinner. The whole event tookplace at the Brewery allowing guests toenjoy the historic ambiance of the building.Russ Klisch, cofounder of Lakefront, spoketo attendees sharing his story starting andbuilding the business. It started as simplyas him buying his brother, Jim, a homebrewing book for his birthday. The beerturned out pretty well, thus challengingRuss to see if he couldn’t make a betterbeer than his brother. Brothers Russ andJim continued to make beers, entercontests, and win awards. Soon they wereencouraged to start producing beer to sell.

In 1987 they began in a small buildingand have since grown into their currentbuilding which formerly housed theMilwaukee Electric Railway and LightCompany’s power plant. Unless a localbusiness was interested in the building, itwas to be torn down by contract with anearby apartment complex. The Klischbrothers purchased the building, restoredit and began production in their newfacility in 1999. Even the light fixturescontain history as they hung in thePlankinton hotel built in 1916. They hung

there until 1982 when the building wasdemolished. The city of Milwaukeeremoved and stored the lights with otherMilwaukee artifacts in a warehouse andlater sold them, at auction, to the Klischbrothers. They brothers then restored thelight fixtures to their original state.

The brothers faced challenges breakinginto the market including building theirown machines, purchasing old usedmachinery and fighting the obstacles ofobtaining financing. Like any otherbusiness they had to continue to provethey have a great product. They alsorealized they had to be innovative andbecame the first producer of gluten free

beer certified by the U. S. Government andoriginated organic beers. Their hard workhas brought them to now producing over33,000 barrels of beer a year, over 200awards in 25 years, and the second largestproducer of gluten free beer.
