More than 300 people gathered July 6 to dedicate the Robert J. Miller Homeland Security Education Center and to view two new memorials within the building honoring Medal of Honor Recipient Miller and College of DuPage students who have fallen in the line of duty through their service as firefighters, police officers and military service members. The ceremony was attended by Miller’s parents, Phillip and Maureen Miller, as well as Gold Star families; families of COD alumni who have fallen while serving their communities in the military or as first responders; COD students, faculty and staff; and members of the community. Continuing Education is launching Project COACH (Career Opportunities and ACHievement) this fall to increase educational, vocational and socialization opportunities for developmentally disabled students in DuPage County. The two-year, application-based program is targeted at adults with mild intellectual or developmental disabilities. It also provides post high school transition students with additional educational training aimed at preparing them for meaningful employment. Read More

A variety of classes are available this fall as part of COD’s Learning Communities program. Learning communities are unique, innovative learning experiences that typically involve students enrolling as a cohort in two or more courses connected by a common theme, giving students more opportunities to make connections with their professors, classmates and their communities. Get ready to strap on your running shoes. Registration is now open for the 2017 Food Truck Rally and Sunset 5K on Saturday, Sept. 23. Race participants can register individually or as a team. Prizes are awarded for the fastest team and the “Luck of the Draw.” All proceeds benefit COD Student Scholarships. The 2017 parking lot repair and resealing is underway. Crews are working on south lots, north lots and access roadways. These areas will be under repair and staggered in phases. Work, which began July 11, should be completed within two weeks, pending

Social hosts are needed for students coming to COD this summer from Ghana, South Africa, Indonesia, Turkey, India, Pakistan, the Dominican Republic, and Colombia through

the Community College Initiative Program. Hosts are asked to have one or two days of contact with the student each month. This contact could be a home-cooked meal, a local outing or an invitation to a holiday or family celebration to help provide these students with an all-American experience.

A brief orientation session for new social hosts will be held on Thursday, July 20. For more information, contact CCI Program Coordinator Caitlin Luetger-Schlewitt at ext. 2564.
