CHIPOLA this WEEK— Week of April 28, 2014 - May 4, 2014

Chipola baseball in state tournament The Indians have clinched a spot in the FCSAA State Tournament May 9-14, at Joker Marchant Stadium in Lakeland. Chipola hosts Northwest, Friday, April 25, at 4 p.m., in the final game of league play to decide the Panhandle Conference Championship. A Chipola win would give the Indians the league title. If Chipola and Gulf Coast both lose Friday, the Indians are still champs. If Chipola loses and Gulf Coast wins, the Indians finish second but still make the state tournament. The Indians scored a big Chipola 15-3 win over Northwest on April 23. Tom Watson earned the win for Chipola. Watson was the FCSAA Pitcher of the Week for April 14. He has an 8-0 record in 8 starts with a 2.67 ERA. The Indians trounced Pensacola 10-2 on April 19. Taylor Lewis (4-2) was the winning

pitcher. Ian Rice hit two homeruns in the game. Rice is hitting .346 on the year with 10 homeruns.Chipola is the second ranked team in the NJCAA National Poll. In the April 22 FCSAA State Poll, Chipola is third behind first place Gulf Coast and second place Polk. Chipola softball in state tournament The Lady Indians will play in the FCSAA State Softball Tournament May 2 in Pensacola. The Lady Indians (10-12) are scheduled to host Santa Fe in a non-conference game Wednesday, April 30, with game time to be announced. Katie Harrison is the FCSAA Player of the Week for April 15. She has a .444 batting average with 22 homeruns and 81 RBI’s. She has started all 50 games for Chipola this year. Chipola is currently third in the league race behind league champion Tallahassee and second place Northwest as of April 24. The Lady Indians (30-20) are ninth in the FCSAA State Poll.

Theatre students land jobs

Chipola Theatre had another successful year at the Southeastern Theatre Conference. All Chipola Theatre students who attended the convention looking for professional jobs were hired for summer theatre positions. Joshua Emanuel will be working as an RWS & Associates, Inc., Sound Engineer at Idlewild Amusement Park in Ligonier, PA. Colton Day will be working as a General Technician at

Shenandoah Summer Music Theatre in Winchester, VA.

American Red Cross Lifeguard Training course begins May 12Must be 15 years of age, in good physical condition, able to swim 500 yards, able to swim freestyle & breast-stroke and must be able to retrieve a 10 pound brick from a 7’ depth, and tread water for 2 minutes.

Course will be held from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m., May 12-15 and May 19-23, with the final test on May 23. Cost of the course is $200. For information about the course, call Rance Massengill at 850-718-2240.

2014 Chipola Commencement The Chipola College 2014 Commencement Ceremony has been moved to the Dothan Civic Center on Thursday, May 1, at 7 p.m. The address is 126 St. Andrews Street, Dothan, AL.

The Chipola Health Center, where the ceremony is usually held, is currently under renovation.

College officials moved the ceremony to the Dothan Civic Center to allow graduates to invite an unlimited number of guests to share the event. The ceremony will be broadcast live on the web at www.ustream.tv/channel/chipolacollege.

The Chipola Cosmetology program invites cancer survivors and those living with

cancer to enjoy complementary services on Tuesday, June 3 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Harrell discusses waste water at Chipola—Rick Harrell, Water Supervisor for the City of Marianna Public Works Department, was a guest speaker for a recent Chipola College Science Club seminar. Harrell explained the waste water treatment process which involves a number of steps that include various biological and physical purification stages. Harrell is pictured in yellow shirt with members of the Science Club.

Modern Marketing Madness Seminar set for May 2 Chipola College and the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce will offer a small business seminar, “Modern Marketing Techniques,” Friday, May 2, from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., at the Jackson County Agricultural Center on Penn Avenue. The seminar will cover modern marketing techniques including blogging, tweeting, linking and booking. Participants will learn about social media outlets, marketplace research and innovative tools to reach the consumer. Cost of the seminar is $15 at the door. Participants also may register online at www.northfloridabiz.com. The first six Chipola students to sign up will receive free admission.
