    5 • IN THIS ISSUE

  • A new year brings new possibilities. And the opportunity to take stock of where we are, especially when it is the beginning of a new decade. So, it seems like a good time to turn our gaze both backward and forward — to celebrate the past and challenge ourselves in the future. Our winter productions provide you with this compelling, dual opportunity.

In the nostalgia department, we’re thrilled to ring in 2020 by going back to our roots — the roots of rock and roll, that is — with Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story. For a skinny kid from Texas, Buddy had an oversized influence on a generation of musicians and entertainers. This new version is directed by Tony Award-nominee and Playhouse favorite, Marcia Milgrom Dodge (The Secret Garden, Cabaret) and features a multi-talented ensemble of actor-singer-musicians who bring Buddy and all his friends to life right here on our biggest stage!

At the same time, we want to cast our gaze on the present and the future. Our world premiere of americUS by the internationally acclaimed performance ensemble Universes takes a keen and critical eye to what’s happening in contemporary America. Who are we as a country in 2020? How do we handle the challenges, inequities and opportunities in the coming decade? In a theatrical collage of monologues, song, spoken-word poetry and dance, Universes takes a deep dive into the state of the union. Is it challenging? Yes. Is it important? Absolutely. Please join us for a new kind of storytelling unlike anything you’ve seen before!

As always, we thank you for making the live theatre part of your life. Together with our arts partners throughout this community, we make Cincinnati a vibrant and fulfilling place to work and live.

  • An Inspiration for Rock and Roll Legends to ComeBy Gigi Relic

As one of the first artists inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Buddy Holly is considered one of the most influential creative forces in early rock and roll. See what other rock and roll legends have said about Holly and his band The Crickets.

“He had recorded something like 60 songs and every one of them was a hit, and most were hit records. Even the Beatles cannot compare to the magnitude of this contribution. The music he made, he invented himself, with very little help from others.” — Don McLean

“I still like Buddy’s vocal style. And his writing. One of the main things about The Beatles is that we started out writing our own material. John and I started to write because of Buddy Holly. It was like, ‘Wow! He writes and is a musician.’” — Paul McCartney

“I was looking for a name like The Crickets that meant two things, and from crickets I got to beetles. And I changed the BEA, because ‘beetles’ didn’t mean two things on its own. When you said it, people thought of crawly things; and when you read it, it was beat music.” — John Lennon

“Buddy Holly was the first one that we were really aware of in England who could play and sing at the same time — not just strum, but actually play the licks.” — John Lennon

“I play Buddy Holly every night before going onstage. It keeps me honest.” — Bruce Springsteen

BUDDY: THE BUDDY HOLLY STORY • 14

  • “It was the fact that we were doing Buddy’s song [‘Not Fade Away’] that also gave us the extra provocation to start writing our own songs.” — Keith Richards

“I just have some sort of feeling that he was — I don’t know how or why — but I know he was with us all the time we were making this record in some kind of way.” — Bob Dylan

“[John] wore glasses, but he would only wear them in private… But when Buddy came out, the glasses came out too… In our imaginations back then, John was Buddy and I was Little Richard or Elvis. You’re always somebody when you start.”

    — Paul McCartney

“I only needed specs for reading, but as a result of wearing them all the time to try to look like Buddy Holly, I became genuinely nearsighted.” — Elton John

“Of all the music heroes of the time, Buddy Holly was the most accessible, and he was the real thing… He was one of us.” — Eric Clapton

“Buddy Holly’s death is what I used to try to write the biggest possible song I could write about America. And not a ‘This Land Is Your Land’ or ‘America, the Beautiful’ or something like that. I wanted to write a song that was completely brand new in its perspective.” — Don McLean

  • Breaking Bounds: A Closer Look at UniversesBy Natalie Hulla

Universes is an award-winning, multicultural performance ensemble that breaks traditional theatrical bounds to create its own brand of live storytelling. They innovatively fuse theatre, poetry, dance, jazz, politics, hip-hop, Spanish boleros and down-home blues to craft stimulating and entertaining productions unlike many theatre companies performing today. The ensemble originated in The Bronx in 1995, and their artistic origins were inspired by the urban music and poetry scene that took over New York City in the ’90s. With national and international touring credits, Universes has been praised by critics for their singular and unforgettable performance style. Take a look at some of the acclaimed works Universes has created.

UNISONUNISON is a modern-day drama about collective memory and legacy that exclusively features the poetry of legendary playwright August Wilson. Through original music and movement, alongside Wilson’s poetry, UNISON tells the story of a dying poet who bequeaths his apprentice a secret box that they’re instructed to destroy. But the apprentice gives in to their curiosity and opens the box, releasing the terrors and demons that afflicted the poet all his life.

“This is theater of the highest caliber that does not play it safe…In the hands of this group of exceptional artists, UNISON is a raw and soulful triumph full of creativity and poignancy.” — Siskiyou Daily

Party PeopleInspired by social revolutionaries of the ’60s and ’70s, Party People finds two young men debuting a video at an art gallery about the era’s most influential activist groups. At the gallery opening, they find themselves reuniting with original members of the Black Panther Party and the Young Lords Party/Org, and what unfolds is a challenging and complex narrative about what revolution means through both historical and contemporary lenses. Party People is based on dozens of interviews from original activists from both parties.

Asia Mark, Steven Sapp, Mildred Ruiz-Sapp and Gamal Chasten at an americUS workshop at the Playhouse.

    americUS • 38

  • “Fast, confrontational, reflective by turns, and packed with music and dance as propulsive as the years when the groups were spawned… Volatile, fiery choreography and spirit-moving blues, jazz, work-song and Latino songs… A well-deserved, prolonged standing ovation… Power to the people, indeed!” — San Francisco Chronicle

AmerivilleAmeriville takes place in New Orleans shortly after Hurricane Katrina in 2005. The show reflects personal stories about surviving the storm (and the storm’s aftermath) that the ensemble collected through interviews with local artists and community members in the region. Through poetry, original music and dance, the show is a challenging artistic critique of a “culture of fear” that’s gripped America since its founding.

“An effervescent, racially mixed group who call themselves Universes... are as likely to kick some poetry as break out into a capella singing, to orchestrate a vocal exercise as they are to burst into a step show.... Their energy and realness is unmatchable.” — The Village Voice

SlanguageBorrowing from personal experiences, Slanguage is an artistic portrait about life on the American streets. This five-person show is built around a subway ride from Brooklyn to the Bronx and uses poetry, rap, gospel, jazz, the blues and Spanish boleros to tell an innovative tale that is uniquely New York. Slanguage balances moments of humor with dramatic truth-telling to render an ultimately hopeful story about the contemporary urban landscape.

“For what these brilliant wordsmiths really do — and do with the kind of verbal and musical facility old Bill Shakespeare engaged in when modern English itself was in its earliest stages of development — is nothing short of reinventing the multiplicity of mother tongues in which they negotiate their world on a daily basis.” — Chicago Sun-Times

UNIVERSES(Authors/Creators/Composers)Universes is a national theatre company dedicated to the creation, development, production, touring, community engagement and educational dissemination of new theatrical and performance works for the stage. It supports artists within and outside of its core company to foster artistic excellence in American theatre. Its core company consists of a revolving and evolving set of multi-disciplined writers and performers who fuse poetry, theatre, music and dance to bring American voices to life through moving, challenging and entertaining theatrical works. Led by its Founders/Artistic Directors, Steven Sapp and Mildred Ruiz-Sapp, the core group of writers breaks the bounds of traditional theatre, building on Universes’ aesthetic and unique brand, to invite/challenge old and new generations of theatre crafters, as well as theatregoers and newcomers, to envision a new American theatre. Founded in The Bronx, New York, in 1995, the original members of Universes came together in the urban poetry and music scene of the late 1990s, quickly moving through the “downtown” performance scene to build a home for themselves in American theatre. In their 24 years, they have taken their original pieces around the world, electrifying crowds and sparking conversation about just what it means to be an American citizen: right here and right now.
