Abstract—7,7-Dimethyl-2-methylenenorbornan-1-ol, a fenchone-derived strained allylic bicycloalkan-1-ol, undergoes an unex-pected new type of anomalous ozonolysis to yield a mixture of a rearranged b-hydroxyketone and a fragmented carboxylic acid. The proposed mechanisms involves two unusual different trappings for two different key Criegees intermediates. 2005 Elsevier Ltd. alkan-1-ols to fragmented cycloalkanone-based a-hydroxymethyl-
ketones.
Ozonolysis reaction has a great interest in syntheticorganic chemistry since it constitutes one of the mostefficient tools for the oxidative cleavage of carbon–carbon double bonds.1 Nevertheless, some unsaturatedcompounds such as allylic alcohols,2 methylenecyclo-butanes,3 a,b-unsaturated carbonyl compounds,4
a,b-unsaturated phosphonic esters,5 etc. are known toundergo anomalous ozonolysis. In this sense, Jung andDavidov have recently demonstrated that severalstrained allylic bicycloalkan-1-ols undergo a generalanomalous ozonolysis to synthetically-valuable cyclo-alkanone-based a-hydroxymethylketones (Scheme 1).2c
This anomalous ozonolysis takes place by a requiredformation of a key Criegees primary ozonide (1,2,3-tri-oxolane), which undergoes an unusual Grob-like-frag-mentation (Scheme 1), instead of the expecteddissociation into the subsequent Criegees intermediatestowards normal ozonization.2c The process occurs understandard ozonization conditions (CH2Cl2, 78 C, O3
and Me2S) with good-to-high yields, providing an effi-cient tactic for the stereocontrolled preparation of cyclo-alkanone-based a-hydroxymethylketones from several

strained allylic bicycloalkan-1-ols, such as bicyclo[2.2.1]-heptane-, bicyclo[3.2.0]heptane- and bicyclo[4.2.0]octane-based ones.2c
In this letter we demonstrate that such anomalousozonolysis of strained allylic bicycloalkan-1-ols tocycloalkanone-based a-hydroxymethylketones (Scheme1) is not a general process, being possible by other typesof anomalous ozonolysis for such kind of allylicalcohols.

In the course of our investigations on the syntheticapplications of several fenchone-derived C1-substituted2-methylenenorbornanes,6 we were interested in obtain-ing cyclopentanone-based a-hydroxymethylketone 2busing the anomalous ozonolysis of fenchone-derived7,7-dimethyl-2-methylenenorbornan-1-ol 1b (Scheme2), as the same form that analogue 2a can be easilyobtained by simple ozonization of camphor-derived3,3-dimethyl-2-methylenenorbornan-1-ol 1a (Scheme2).2c
Surprisingly, when 1b6a was submitted to ozonizationunder standard conditions,7 a mixture of rearrangednorbornane-based b-hydroxyketone 3b8 and fragmentedcyclopentanone-based carboxylic acid 4b,9 in ca. 4:1ratio,7 was obtained instead of the expected 2b (Scheme3).
We have considered the next mechanism to account forthis new type of anomalous ozonolysis: (1) key partici-pation of the Criegees primary and secondary ozonides5b and 6b, respectively, (2) partial trapping of 5bthrough a pinacolic Wagner–Meerwein rearrangementprocess involving intermediate 7b10,11 and (3) partialtrapping of 5b through a Grob-like-fragmentation pro-cess involving intermediate 8b (Scheme 4).
We are convinced that the different behaviour of allylicbicycloalkan-1-ols 1a and 2a towards ozonizations isdue to a crucial stereocontrol of the possible cascades

of reactions occurring in the ozonization process.12 Thiscontrol must be present in the overall process from thefirst individual cycloaddition step of ozone to the start-ing substrate.13
In summary, a new type of anomalous ozonolysis instrained allylic bicycloalkan-1-ols is reported. The pro-cess involves two different and unusual trappings fortwo different key ozonide intermediates (primary andsecondary ones, respectively). Further investigationson a plausible stereochemical control in the anomalousozonolysis of 2-methylenebicycloalkan-1-ols are inprogress.

7. Ozone was burbled through a cooled (78 C) solution of162 mg (1.06 mmol) of 1b in 10 mL of dry CH2Cl2 for 4 h.After that, a stream of argon was passed through thecooled solution for 10 min to eliminate the excess ofozone. The cooled reaction mixture was then quenchedwith excess of Me2S (0.3 mL), allowed to warm up toroom temperature and treated with water (10 mL). Afterstandard work up, the obtained residue was analyzed byRMN (3b/4b in an approximately 4:1 ratio); 74 % yield.Spectroscopic data of 3b are coincident with the previouslydescribed by the same compound in Ref. 8, whereas the
corresponding data of 4b are coincident with the previ-ously described by us for such compound in Ref. 9.
