Pencil Beam Scanning

At APCC we use the leading edge Pencil Beam Scanning as the high performance delivery mode for IMPT. In Pencil Beam Scanning, the proton beams sculpts the shape of the tumour with micro-millimeter accuracy and then paints it, one voxel at a time.

At any point of time, only a microscopic part of the tumour is treated and the pencil beam constantly realigns to adjust to the movements as the tumour changes shape and size. Pencil Bean Scanning ensures a lesser neutron dose to the patient, as compared to delivery techniques like Double Scattering or Uniform Scanning.

3D Cone-Beam CT Image-Guided Proton Therapy (IGPT)

WHEN IS RADIATION THERAPY IDEAL?

To cure early-stage cancerRadio Therapy is ideally suited to cure cancers which are extremely sensitive to radiation. Exposure to radiation beams shrinks these cancers or removes them completely. In early stage cancer care, radiation is often used to complement chemotherapy, or as a precursor to surgery.

Critical adjunct in multi-modal therapyRadiation therapy is used in combination with other forms of treatment like Medical or Surgical Oncology, to attack cancer cells. Radiation can shrink tumours before chemo or surgery; or attack residual cancerous tissue after other treatment modalities have been used.

Cancer spreads when affected cells divide and proliferate at a rapid rate; radiation therapy breaks down the DNA within these cancer cells and kills them, thus stemming the spread. To treat recurring cancersIf a person's cancer has returned (recurred), radiation might be used to treat the cancer or to treat symptoms caused by advanced cancer.

Vital modality in palliative care for symptomatic reliefIn very advanced stages of cancer, radiation is used to control the effects of the disease and alleviate the patient’s suffering. Radio Therapy is effective in shrinking tumours which reduces pain and hardship to the patient.

At APCC, we are taking precision and excellence to the next level the revolutionary Radixact system. Radixact represents the new frontier of Tomotherapy; powered by state-of-the-art 3D CT imaging, it uses a linear accelerator to deliver a high dose radiation to the tumour with sub millimetre precision. This ensures that just the affected cells are targeted; surrounding healthy tissue is not exposed to radiation. The Radixact Tomotherapy system at APCC is the first of its kind sophisticated treatment modality available in Chennai.

Robot-assisted surgery integrates advanced computer technology with the experience of skilled surgeons. This technology provides the surgeon with a 10x magnified, high definition, 3D-image of the body's intricate anatomy. The controls in the console allow the surgeon to manipulate special surgical instruments that are smaller, as well as more flexible and manoeuvrable than the human hand. The surgeon is thus in complete control of the surgical procedure. The robot helps replicate the surgeon’s hand movements, while minimizing hand tremors. Diagnostic surgery may be used to help diagnose cancer through biopsy or determine the stage or extent of the disease.

Preventive surgery may be performed to remove body tissue that is likely to become cancerous even though there are no signs of cancer at the time of the surgery.

Debulking surgery removes some, but not all of the cancer and usually is combined with radiation, chemotherapy or other treatments.

Oncoplastic/Reconstructive surgery improves the appearance of patients or restores the function of an organ or body part after major cancer surgery.

Targeted TherapyAt APCC we use the precision medicine approach to deliver personalized and targeted cancer treatment. We use therapeutics to target specific genes or proteins that make up cancer cells and launch an all-out attack on them to arrest the growth and spread of cancer cells.

Our approach is to identify potential targets to compare the amounts of individual proteins in cancer cells with those in normal cells. Proteins that are present in cancer cells but not normal cells or those that are more abundant in cancer cells would be potential targets, especially if they are known to be involved in cell growth or survival.

Hormone TherapyHormone therapy fights cancer

by changing the amount of hormones in the body to treat

certain forms of cancer that rely on these chemicals to grow and

spread. We use drugs to prevent hormones from making cancer

cells grow and divide. ImmunotherapyImmunotherapy leverages the patient’s immune system to form an effective arsenal against cancer. The immune system is our first line of defence against cancer; immune cells patrol the body vigilantly looking out for cells that are not normal, such as bacteria, virus and cancer cells, with an aim to destroy them.

Molecular ProfilingMolecular profiling is a great

catalyst to improve efficacy of systemic therapies. Our expert

pathologists and molecular biologists analyse the cancer

tissue sample collected for biopsy or the patient's blood sample and perform rigorous molecular biology testing on

them. These tests predict the patient’s chance of responding

to cancer drugs when administered for treatment. This

forms the basis for bespoke treatment plans for individual

cases of cancer.

Genetic ProfilingIn Genetic profiling the gene mutation of the cancerous cells are checked to predict whether the patient can respond to a particular drug or not.
