  • A new era for occupational health and safety - ISO 45001:2018.

    • An introduction to ISO 45001:2018 • The benefits of gap analysis • ISO 45001:2018 training guide

  • Lloyd’s Register ISO 45001 OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AND SAFETY

Increased global trade brings new health and safety challenges, which have driven the need for an international Occupational Health & Safety (OH&S) management system standard, to enable global benchmarking and to raise the bar for health and safety in the workplace. For this reason, ISO have developed an international standard that will be applicable to organisations of any size, sector or location.

New RequirementsISO 45001 will bring OH&S management and continual improvement into the core of an organisation. This new standard is an opportunity for organisations to align their OH&S management system with their strategic direction. With greater focus on improving health and safety performance and processes.

What are the benefits of the new standard?ISO 45001 will provide clear and improved requirements and clauses, compared with OHSAS 18001, which served as a basis for the standard. One of the main objectives of ISO 45001 is to integrate employees and their representatives into the core of the OH&S management system.

ISO 45001 will enable organisations to improve resilience by anticipating, adapting and responding to health and safety risks.

Other benefits include:• Easier integration with other

ISO standards, such as ISO 9001 (Quality Management) and ISO 14001 (Environmental Management)

    • Top management involvement will lead to greater commitment and shared health and safety responsibility throughout the organisation

The ISO 45001 standard requires organisations to look beyond their own health and safety requirements and consider what external requirements and risks exist. Organisations should not only consider what health and safety issues directly impact on them, but also take into account the impact on wider society.

With ISO 45001 using Annex SL, there becomes a much stronger focus on the Context of an Organization and the role of top management, ensuring buy-in from top management and a greater employee contribution. ISO 45001 expects OH&S aspects to be integrated into the structure of an organisation.

Currently with OHSAS 18001, health and safety responsibilities sit with the Health and Safety Manager. With ISO 45001 the H&S responsibilities will now need to be integrated into everyday business operations with wider accountability and no longer be the sole responsibility of the Health & Safety Manager.

    ISO 45001:2018 gap analysis

A Lloyd’s Register gap analysis assessment examines and reports on your occupational health & safety (OH&S) management systems readiness for migration or assessment to ISO 45001:2018. It focuses on how your OH&S management system has addressed or plans to address, the changes introduced through the publication of ISO 45001.

This assessor delivered activity enables you to focus on critical, high risk or weak areas of your occupational health and safety (OH&S) management system, prior to your formal assessment or migration visit.

Whether you are in the early stages of implementing your ISO 45001 management system or are looking for a ‘dry run’, the scope can be decided by you.

You will receive documented commentary which will enable you to plan your next steps.• Any gaps, especially where the

response is ‘partial’ or ‘unlikely’, are clearly identified and your assessor will discuss how these gaps may be addressed in order to demonstrate compliance.

    • The gap analysis is not a full assessment against the new standard requirements and does not contribute towards ISO 45001:2018 certification. A certificate will not be issued.

It is helpful for your assessor to be accompanied by a representative from your organisation who understands your OH&S management system. Your representative can clarify any points raised and note any areas of weakness.

By identifying any weaknesses in your OH&S management system, your assessor will estimate a realistic timescales for your assessment.

Based upon the findings, your assessor will advise whether your organisation is ready for assessment or indicates areas requiring further attention.

The gap analysis assessment will provide an opportunity for you to discuss any concerns you may have regarding your OH&S management system or the assessment process.

Our assessors will be open and helpful, and will follow a practical approach. We will add value to your assessment process beyond straightforward compliance.

What happens during the gap analysis ?

During the gap analysis your assessor will ask you for responses to questions regarding your understanding of the ISO 45001 requirements and how you plan to implement them into your management system, to ensure your compliant.

Take a step in the right direction.

During the visit through a series of questions, your assessor will determine your understanding of the new requirements and their implications on your OH&S management system and your organisations readiness to migrate or certify successfully.

What are the benefits of the new standard?

Organisations will need to adopt a strategic approach to OH&S management, encouraging the continual improvement of performance and processes. Other benefits include:• Easier integration with other
