Everyone can probably agree that kids these days have more things to worry about, distract them, and get them into trouble than any other past generation of kids have ever had. If children are never taught morals, if they never get a good grasp of what good values really are, then it seems very plausible that they will not be capable of dealing with and avoiding the types of issues at hand.

Evidently, values education in schools is crucial for developing future citizens of sound moral character. This moral education course is a series of eight books expressly designed to assist the teaching of values education at the foundation level.

Most experts agree that people with defined values and a good self-image are better equipped to deal with challenging situations. These books offer the students the knowledge to make informed decisions about emotional and moral dilemmas. Students are encouraged to think critically about the issues and challenges they face as they grow and develop.

The lessons in these series encourage the students to consider their own values and develop a sense of self-worth. They also focus on the importance of showing respect for and tolerance towards others, and valuing diversity in our society.

The varied lessons and activities in each of these books extend across all major learning areas and will have relevance for a wide range of student learning styles and intelligences.

We strongly believe that the students, parents, teachers and the society as whole can benefit from a course like this.

Today we are going to discuss the most important topic of love. Have you heard people talk about love before? You might have heard of it at home or on the TV.

Think of one person or thing or activity that you love and write down on a sheet of paper why you love it.

Do you know the opposite of love is hate? Read the story below of a teacher and her students just like you!

A school teacher had decided to make her students learn a lesson by playing a game. The teacher told each child in the class to bring along a small cloth bag containing a few potatoes. She asked the students to name each potato after a person that the student hates. So if you hated three people, you would have three potatoes in your bag each named after the person you hated. She then asked the students to carry the bag along with them every day to school. After a week, the students started complaining that their bags were getting heavy and the potatoes began to rot and smell bad!

The teacher asked: “How did you feel while carrying the potatoes with you for one week?” The children started complaining about the smell.

Then the teacher told them the hidden meaning behind the game. The teacher said: “This is what happens when you carry your hatred for somebody inside your heart. You will carry the bad smell of hatred wherever you went. If you cannot tolerate the smell of rotten potatoes for just one week, can you imagine what it is like to have the bad smell of hatred in your heart for a lifetime?”

Weakness into strengths

This is an inspiring story of a two year old boy Kim who defeated his weakness, by unknowingly making it his strength.

Poor Kim lost his left hand in a terrible accident. His parents could not console him.

To cheer him up, his father made him join a Judo school. As the boy always wanted to learn Judo, his father thought that this would make him happy.

Everyone wondered how a one armed boy could learn Judo. However, the master happily enrolled him. He trained in

Personality 1Green 19

Judo for about eight months. He trained for all eight months trying to master just one stroke that his teacher taught him.

The boy was surprised and sometimes annoyed as his master taught him only one stroke.

Yet, he said nothing. The boy mastered the stroke over time.Nobody else had ever mastered that particular stroke like him before. The boy was picked by the master to compete in a national level Judo championship tournament.

Everyone made fun of Kim and the master. How could a one-handed boy win a national championship? Even the boy was not sure why his master chose him.

Surprising everyone, Kim easily defeated six contenders with his single stroke. He moved on to the semi-finals. He struggled a bit in the semi-final but finally won the semi-final and even the final!

Kim was surprised! How did he win the competition with just a single stroke?

His master told him, "My dear boy, you learned the most difficult stroke in Judo that very few can master to perfection. If your opponent wants to beat you and prevent you from using the stroke, they should hold your left hand. This is the secret behind your victory!"

If the boy turned his weakness, the loss of his left hand, to a great success, why can’t we?

C. Go to the front of the class and read out your weaknesses, one at a time. You want to improve upon your weaknesses and turn them into strengths. Discuss with friends and teacher how you can do that. When

Personality 1Green 21

your friends and teacher give you advice, thank them.

D. Each student has to come up with one weakness that he/she wants to overcome. For the next three days, make an effort to change that weakness into strength. For example, if a student feels he is not able to talk in front of a crowd, he would prepare a speech and deliver it in the class three days in a row.(Note to the teacher: Focus on creating a supporting and casual environment, to encourage the child and to allow him/her to feel comfortable making mistakes while learning).

Note: It's true that we all have strengths and weaknesses. But we can also turn our weaknesses into strengths. So many people have done it.

Your teacher will show you videos of such people. These videos have been provided to every school where this book is taught.

Hard work

5

What is the subject that you find most difficult? Is it Maths, Science or English?

Do you want to get better at it?

How will you do that?

Is there a magical way?

Yes, there is. You just have to work hard!

Ask your teacher to help you more.

Your mother can study with you too.

Study more. Read more books. Practice more.

And then the magic will happen.

You will get better marks. You will be surprised!

Read this story!

Once there was a village named Santhana. Due to lack of rainfall, the village had a scarcity of water. There was neither water to drink nor to water the crops. People in the village arranged for a meeting and they decided to move to another village.

Personality 1Green 23

Surya was a farmer in that village. He was a confident and hard working person. He told the other villagers, “We will dig a new well in the land near our village temple. It will give us water. Everyone should help to dig the well"

The villagers decided to give it a try. They started digging the well. Two days passed, they dug down to fifty feet. There was no sign of any water in the well. Five days passed, they dug down more than seventy five feet. Still no sign of water. The villagers became sad and they thought they would never find any water in the well. Finally, they decided to move to some other village. Surya asked them to dig the well still deeper. They refused to do so. He started digging the well alone. People in the village discouraged him. "Surya is a fool, no sign of water there in that well"

Ten days passed. He alone dug down to one hundred feet. He was digging and suddenly when he hit the earth, a fountain of water splashed on his face. He became very happy. He called up all the villagers. They were all surprised to see water gushing up from the well.

They felt sorry for discouraging him. He told them hard work was always rewarded. People in the village were very happy and never had to live without water ever again.

EXERCISEA. Answer the following.

1. Why was there a scarcity of water in the village?2. What kind of a man was Surya?

Green24 Personality 1

Personality 1Green 25

C. Write true or false.

i. The village had a lot of water. ii. Surya was a lazy man. iii. Surya wanted the villagers to help him dig a well. iv. They found water inside the well immediately. v. Surya did not give up and finally found water.

Now, stand up where you are and start jogging at your spot. Jog for two minutes without stopping and go hard! Now stop. Do you feel tired? Did you work hard? But did you cover any distance at all? NO!

Hard work alone will not bring you success. Hard work must be in the right direction and for that you must know what works and what doesn’t, because only then can you work hard on what works. For instance, if you have to learn a new language, merely writing a lot will not help you even though that is hard work. You must speak the language too!

For each of the following, write down what is required to be done/ whom should you take help from and how long do you need to practise.

Personality 1Green 27

Look outside. What do you see? Do you see the sun, the playground and some trees? Isn’t it beautiful?

Look inside your bag. What have you got there? Haven’t you got books, pencils and your lunchbox?

Think of all the people who help you. Your father fulfils your needs.Your teacher helps you learn many things.Your friends give you company.Your parents work very hard. They earn money to buy gifts for you. They buy books, toys and pencils for you. There are so many things that you have.

Rajesh loved to play the flute, but he never used to practise. All his friends used to go out to play football and when he told them he wanted to stay back and play his favourite flute, they would laugh at him and make fun of him.

He did not like people laughing at him, so he never played the flute and always had to play football with his friends, even though he did not enjoy it. The chair was shaky and broke! He fell down and broke his hand and started crying.

His mother heard him cry and came to help him. She sat next to him and asked, “What happened son? How did you fall?” “I was trying to get a glass down from the cupboard shelf,” replied Sujan.“Then you should have called me,” said his mother. “You can always ask for my help.”

One day, while I was walking to my school, I met God. He gave me two boxes and said, "Put all your sorrows in the black box and all your joys in the golden box."

For the next thirty days I did what he had told me. I kept my sadness in the black box and my joys in the golden box. The golden box became heavier every day. But, the black one was not heavy. I was very surprised. So, I opened the black box to find out why.

Guess what I found inside the box?

I saw, in the bottom of the box there was a hole.

From this hole all my sorrows flew away. I showed the hole to God, and asked, "Where is my sadness? Where are my sorrows?" He smiled, "My child, they're all here with me."

I am a happy boy now because God has taken away all my sorrows with him.
