Easter Sunrise Services

One of the first questions I was asked when I arrived at my new church wasn’t a question but a statement: We have an Easter Sunrise Service here! My reply was “Great! I look forward to that.” I lied. I don’t know of any minister who can truthfully say they look forward to a sunrise service. We are late risers, most of us. We have seen many more sunsets than we have sunrises. One of my goals for my remaining years is to keep that fact an important part of my everyday life. I have set 7:00 am as the official Easter sunrise time in my churches for the last twenty years. I don’t care what time the Weather Channel says it is, the sun doesn’t rise at my church until 7:00 am. I have often pontificated on the fact that Jesus was just as risen at 11:00 am as he was at 7:00 am. Even his own followers had a hard time recognizing him that early in the morning. I bet by 11:00 everyone would have been wide awake and nobody would have thought he was the gardener. I have “enjoyed” some unusual experiences at sunrise services. Many years ago I served a church situated on the main highway coming out of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. At 7:00 my faithful were standing up in the parking lot next to the highway getting ready to sing when a South Carolina Highway patrolman pulled over a family of five and two dogs trying to find their way back to Ohio. It seems they were in a special hurry to get there and were breaking the speed limit. With his blue lights flashing and siren blowing he pulled them over forty feet from where we all were standing. He wrote them a ticket for the last hundred dollars they had left after a week of miniature golf and seafood buffets and sent them on their way to Cleveland. You never know what kind of weather you are going to get on Easter Sunday. I always felt sorry for the ladies who spent good money to buy sleeveless, colorful summer dresses for Easter Sunday and they woke up to find it was 38 degrees with a 20 mile an hour wind. Many sunrise services were punctuated by Southern belles shivering their way through four verses of “Up From The Grave He Arose.” I remember one year when a typo in the newsletter caused much undue excitement on Easter Sunday morning. The newsletter was supposed to say “We will have a church wide breakfast following the Easter sunrise service at 7:30.” What it said instead was a church wide breakfast would follow the Easter Sunrise service and the cost will be $7.30.” We almost had to cancel Easter that year because of the civil uprising following this within the Ladies Circles. All of this could have been avoided by cancelling the Easter Sunrise service and having a church brunch following the 11:00 am service. This year we are having a sunrise service at 7:00 followed by FREE doughnuts at 7:30, and a joint service at 10:30. This will be followed by families going home and serving a spiral spliced ham in honor of the King of The Jews and Lord of our church. Follow this up with a short egg hunt and a long nap. Happy Easter everyone!

Program Ministry Update

What’s ‘hop’pening in our Program Ministry this spring? (Forgive me, I love a good pun.) Let’s spring into an update on some egg-cellent ministries at Trinity UMC. This month we will celebrate Easter, and the Risen Christ, our Lord and Savior. What a special time in the life of the church! — Peace and Joy, Cindy

Children’s Easter Egg Hunt Hop on in! Our children and families are invited to an Easter Egg Hunt at Trinity UMC on Saturday, April 20th, at Cordie Page from 10 a.m.—12 noon. Our youth are invited to come and help us hide the eggs at 9:30 a.m. Please bring a basket for your child. We’ll enjoy some fun, fellowship, and refreshments.

Palm Sunday — Children’s Easter Musical Performance You’re in for a treat on Palm Sunday! Our children (our Fish Club) will present an Easter musical, ‘The Cross of Christ,’ at the combined service at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, April 14th. Our young ones sing with such love and enthusiasm! Parents—we invite your child to wear Easter colors and join us for a rehearsal that morning at 9:30 in the gym. We will not have Children’s Sunday School that day.

Fish Club — Big Fish, Little Fish & Minnows Our ‘Fish Club,’ Children’s Ministry program, will have it’s last Wednesday program for spring on April 10th. We grew this season with 23 children participating. We’d like to give a big heartfelt thank-you to Linda Gainey & Lisa Davis and all of our wonderful volunteers. Thank you for sharing God’s love with our children!

UMYF Our youth are enjoying food, faith, and fun at UMYF on Sunday nights at 5:30 p.m. at Cordie Page. Our youth have been taking turns leading our devotion and sharing their faith. We won’t meet on Easter evening the 21st. We’re planning a fundraiser for spring and gearing up for a whitewater rafting trip. If you can help with a Youth meal in April or May, please let us know by emailing [email protected].

‘Triple L’ Celebrating Spring at Brookgreen ‘Triple L,’ our seniors’ fellowship group, recently enjoyed subs and games at the home of Emma Lou & Jimmy Johnston. What a nice gathering and enjoyable time! On April 4th, we’ll celebrate spring with a trip to beautiful Brookgreen Gardens. We’ve arranged for a group rate of $14.00 per person. Bring a bag lunch for our picnic, and we’ll provide drinks and dessert. Let Cindy Smith or Tami Seeders know by April 1st if you can go.

You’ve Heard of a Wishing Well. Well, We Have a Wishing Tree! Our ‘Egg-celent Book Wishing Tree,’ will be up on Sunday, March 31st & Sunday, April 7th. We lost hundreds of Bible story books and more. So, we put a wish list together. (This wishing tree is like our Angel Tree.) Can you take an egg from the tree and buy a book for our Children & Youth Ministries? Thanks so much!

Trinity UMC & First UMC Vacation Bible School — Let’s Roar!

Would you like to ‘Roar!’ this year at VBS? We have a jungle theme with lots of wild animals. (I know, that sounds a lot like any VBS.) And, I love this part too. ‘Roar!’ says ‘God is good! Life is wild!’ Come and join us for the ‘mane’ event!

VBS will be June 23rd—26th (Sunday through

Wednesday), 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. at First UMC. We’re excited to team up with First UMC this

year! Since our volunteers will be working together, we need to go ahead and find out who can help this year. We’re getting ready a little early to be able to better plan and coordinate. Would you be willing to volunteer and support our children having a fun time learning about Jesus this summer? Please email [email protected] or text Cindy’s cell at 843-655-6562 or Linda Gainey at 843-340-7138. Let us know what volunteer area you would like.

Please let us know by April 12th. Volunteer Opportunities: Registration Decorations Preschool (3’s & 4’s) Kindergarten & 1st Grade 2nd & 3rd Graders 4th & 5th graders Actresses for dramas Crafts Bible Storytellers Recreation Kitchen Helpers Willing to help wherever needed

Rivertown Salkehatchie June 15-22, 2019

Yes, Rivertown Salkehatchie is alive and well for 2019! There will obviously be a few changes this year,

but the camp will be held the third week in June.

Our workcampers will sleep at Conway Middle School and eat at various places, some of which have not been decided on yet.

They will worship with us at the 11:00 AM service on June 16 at Conway Christian School. They will have pizza

for lunch afterwards, and we are planning our traditional welcome covered dish meal on Sunday night. Place and time will be announced later.

There are many needs when an event of this size is held. You may help by: working on a site, donating supplies, delivering materials to sites, serving and/or cooking food, delivering popsicles, purchasing snacks, bottled water

or small Gatorades, giving a monetary donation, etc.

For more information, contact Jeff Davis at 843-222-3080 or [email protected].

Trinity Church, It’s hard to put into words how grateful I am to all of you for your prayers and phone calls during my recent surgery. I have been in the hospital or re-hab for the entire month of January. My surgeons were very surprised at the damage done by postponing diverticitus. I am trying to adhere to what the doctor says, but if you know me, you know that’s hard for me. A special thank you to my We Care ladies for providing a much appreciated meal. God Bless our Church Family, Lynn Long

Dear Church family, I have appreciated so much your caring for George and me. We have been sorry we could not attend and be with you more. I thank you for putting me on the prayer list. Knowing this helps very much in trying to recover. Our home was total destruction all inside and part of outside. It is still that way. We are most unsure what we will be able to do with it. For your request for address for those of us flooded out (still) without George it is hard. Mail can be P.O. Box 8, Conway, SC, 29526’ With love, Lucy Olson

Thank you, Ed Plaugher, for building and hanging the cross in our

temporary sanctuary at Conway Christian School.

Jesus’ resurrection from the dead is life-changing and life-giving for his followers. But, as Henry Knox Sherrill

notes, Easter’s “joyful news … does not change the contemporary world.” On earth, we still must deal with sin, pain, death and brokenness. And “still before us lie work, discipline, sacrifice,” Sherrill adds. What Easter does, though, is provide Christians with “the spiritual power to do the work, accept the discipline and make

the sacrifice.”

By defeating the grave, Jesus empowers us to bear our worldly troubles with joy, peace and hope. His

resurrection assures us that trials, tears and suffering are only temporary, while eternal victory and life with

Jesus are permanent.

Whatever fears have led us to lock the doors of our hearts, may we discover they’re

no match for Jesus. He always stands among us, offering his peace.

After the April 2013 suicide of his 27-year-old son, Matthew, pastor and author Rick Warren was often asked how he was able to keep going. His frequent reply? “The answer is Easter.” In the Easter sermons Warren preached the following year, he emphasized that Jesus’ resurrection is the answer to discouragement, defeat and devastating trials. “The death, burial and resurrection of Jesus happened over three days,” Warren explained. “Friday was the day of suffering and pain and agony. Saturday was the day of doubt and

confusion and misery. But Easter, that Sunday, was the day of hope and joy and victory. “You will face these three days over and over and over in your lifetime. And when you do, you’ll find yourself asking, as I did, three fundamental questions. Number one, what do I do in my days of pain? Two, how do I get through my days of doubt and confusion? Three, how do I get to the days of joy and victory? The answer is Easter.”
