Book Presentation by Author Rafael Rojas June 2, 2015 6:30 PM Books & Books 265 Aragon Ave., Coral Gables

The Cuban Revolution was a decisive event in Latin American history during the second half of the 20th century. Its impact exceeds the Western hemisphere and can be noted in the impulse to the decolonization processes of Asia, Africa, and the Middle East, and in the Island's incorporation into the Soviet bloc in Eastern Europe. With Cuba's transition to socialism during the 1960s, the Cold War consolidated its presence in Latin America and the Caribbean, determining a large part of the domestic politics and foreign policies of the region's states and societies.

After overthrowing Fulgencio Batista's dictatorship, in 1959, the revolutionary government proposed to transform Cuba's social, economic, and political order. The Island experienced a radical independence from the United States and adopted a model based on the State's hegemony over the economy, society, and culture, and a political regime with a single Communist Party and Marxist-Leninist ideology. According to Rafael Rojas, the great egalitarian project of Cuban socialism, through the universalization of basic social rights, had as its background the Soviet subsidy and the restriction of civic and political rights.

Rafael Rojas is Professor and Researcher in the Division of History at the Centro de lnvestigacion y Docencia Econ6micas (CIDE) in Mexico City. He was a Global Scholar at Princeton University between 2011 and 2014. He is the author of 15 books on Cuban, Mexican, and Latin American intellectual and political history, including La vanguardia peregrina: El escritor cubano, Ia tradici6n y el exilio (2013) and El estante vacio: Literatura y politica en Cuba (2009).
