“A LITTLE BOOK OPEN”

Revelation 1:1 to 22:21

“Go and take the little book which is open in the hand of theangel which standeth upon the sea and upon the earth. Takeit, and eat it up ; and it shall make thy belly bitter, but it shallbe in thy mouth sweet as honey.” Revelation 10:8

“These things saith he that is holy, he that is true, he that haththe key of David, he that openeth, and no man shutteth; andshutteth, and no man openeth.” Revelation 3:7

This angel had in his hand “a little book,” open for all toread and understand. Did this same book contain the revela-tion of divine Science, the “right foot” or dominant powerof which was upon the sea, — upon elementary, latent error,the source of all error’s visible forms? The angel’s left footwas upon the earth; that is, a secondary power was exer-cised upon visible error and audible sin. S&H 559:1-8

Truth has furnished the key to the kingdom, and with this keyChristian Science has opened the door of the human under-standing. None may pick the lock nor enter by some otherdoor. S&H 99:9-12

“Unto you it is given to know the mysteries of the kingdomof God: but to others in parables; that seeing they might notsee, and hearing they might not understand.” Luke 8:10

The time for thinkers has come. Truth independent of doc-trines and time-honored systems, knocks at the portal of hu-manity. Contentment with the past and the cold convention-ality of materialism are crumbling away. Ignorance of Godis no longer the stepping stone to faith. The only guaranteeof obedience is a right apprehension of Him whom to knowaright is Life eternal. Though empires fall, “the Lord shallreign forever.”

A book introduces new thought, but it cannot make themspeedily understood. It is the task of the sturdy pioneer tohew the tall oak and to cut the rough granite. Future agesmust declare what the pioneer has accomplished.

The author has not compromised conscience to suit the gen-eral drift of thought, but has bluntly and honestly given thetext of Truth. She has made no effort to embellish, elaborate,or treat in full detail so infinite a theme. By thousands ofwell-authenticated cases of healing, she and her studentshave proved the worth of her teachings. These cases for themost part have been abandoned as hopeless by regular medi-cal attendants. Few invalids will turn to God till all physi-cal supports have failed, because there is so little faith inHis disposition and power to heal disease.

The divine principle of healing is proved in the personalexperience of any sincere seeker of Truth. Its purpose isgood, and its practice is safer and more potent than that ofany other sanitary method. The unbiased Christian thought issoonest touched by Truth, and convinced of it. Only thosequarrel with her method who do not understand her mean-ing, or discerning the truth, come not to the light lest theirworks be reproved. No intellectual proficiency is requisitein the learner, but sound morals are most desirable.

CHAPTER 1[Rev. 1:1-20]

THE PREFACE1 A great light came to the early

church in the Revelation of St.John. The people were rejoicingin the glad tidings that good isthe victor over evil.

2 The problem of the Revela-tor was to present the glorioustriumph of Truth.

3 John had seen Christ Jesus,the champion of Truth, win acomplete victory over the carnalmind.

4 He, himself, had found trium-phant deliverance from the boil-ing oil, and there on the lonelyisle of Patmos, with the threat ofdeath confronting him daily, hedemonstrated his vision of theChrist.

5 In answer to Peter’s question,“What shall this man do?” Jesushad said, “If I will that he tarrytill I come, what is that to thee?”(John 21:21-23).

6 The beloved disciple indeedtarried until the Christ came infull measure to his conscious-ness, and of that fullness camethe Apocalypse.

7 We also read of the resurrec-tion morning recorded in the

twentieth chapter of John’s gos-pel.

8 John, it is written, entered theopen sepulchre, “and he saw andbelieved.”

9 There in the sepulcher he sawthe Vision of the Christ whichenabled him to write some yearslater a summary of the Scripturesand the summation of ChristianScience — the Revelation of theChrist — revealing “the thingswhich are, and the things whichshall be hereafter.”

10 He must not only tell of theTriumph of Truth; he must pointout the way in which the victoryis won.

11 This he does by unfoldingthe Science of Being.

12 He tells what the truth ofBeing is, and what the truth ofBeing does, as the understand-ing of truth unfolds in human con-sciousness.

13 In the Preface he explainshow Jesus Christ is the Revela-tor.

14 He does this in a seven-foldtestimony to the Revelation, aseven-fold realization of theRevelation, and a seven-folddemonstration to receive theRevelation.

14 The word revelation is fromthe Latin revelare, meaning tounveil, or reveal.

15 In Greek it is the wordapocalypse, meaning to uncoveror disclose.

16 Whereever the word revela-tion is used in the New Testa-ment, it is with the special sig-nificance of unveiling or makingknown the mysteries of the king-dom of God.

17 In his seven letters to thechurch, John points out the errorsin the church which make need-ful the Apocalyptic Vision of theChrist.

18 Then follows the Body ofseven visions, beginning with thediscernment of the truth of Be-ing and concluding with the truthof Being made manifest in con-sciousness through the demon-stration of Christian Science.

19 The seven visions are sevenexperiences in consciousnesswhich take place according to themetaphysical law of spiritualunfoldment — seven successivestages in the warfare whichmakes Christian Science — theMind of Christ — manifest.

20 In the first step of this un-foldment, shown in the first vi-

sion, spiritual sense discerns thetruth of Being.

21 The second step presents theuncovering and denial of error,and the affirmation of truth.

22 In the third step the proof ofSpirit’s allness and matter’snothingness brings mental chem-icalization preceding the revela-tion of the “little book.”

23 The fourth step presents thewarfare of demonstration, i.e.woman’s revelation brings theplagues of physical sense.

24 In the next step, the plaguesof sense vanish before the dem-onstration of Christian Science.

25 The last, or seventh stepshows that the demonstration ofChristian Science make the truthof Being manifest in conscious-ness.

When error confronts you, withhold not the rebuke or theexplanation which destroys error.

Men and women of the nineteenth century, are you called tovoice a higher order of Science? Then obey this call. Go, ifyou must, to the dungeon or the scaffold, but take not backthe words of Truth. How many are there ready to suffer for arighteous cause, to stand a long siege, take the front rank,face the foe, and be in the battle every day?

CHAPTER 2[Rev. 2:1-3:22.]

THE INTRODUCTION1 The letters to the seven

churches, considered in the lightof their metaphysical import,present conditions of error whichhinder the manifestation of theMind of Christ — Christian Sci-ence.

2 Each one of the letters isstamped with the Revelator’scounsel and watchful love.

3 Though banished “for theword of God, and for the testi-mony of Jesus Christ,” he pro-ceeds to unfold the drama of avigorous warfare with the world,the flesh, and all evil — a war-fare necessary to make the Christteaching manifest in conscious-ness.

4 John writes to his fellowworkers as one who knows theirstruggles, their problems, theirtriumphs, and their needs.

5 He writes especially of con-ditions of error which darkentheir light of spiritual understand-ing.

6 The seven conditions of er-ror pointed out by the Revelatorare (1) faith without works, (2)hypocrisy, (3) sensuality, (4)

mental malpractice, (5) un-watchfulness, (6) lack of love,(7) neutrality.

7 Much of the symbolism bywhich these conditions are pre-sented is traceable to the OldTestament.

8 The “tree of life” recalls the“garden [of Genesis] eastward inEden” and points forward to thetree within the street of the HolyCity.

9 John makes metaphorical useof the story of Balaam and Balac,and the story of Jezebel.

10 The “twoedged sword,” the“key of David,” the “new namewritten,” all have interesting sig-nificance in the Old Testament,and lend the riches of their sym-bolism to the Revelator’s mes-sage.

14 In each of the seven letters,John points out environmentalconditions harmful to the well-being of the Church.

15 In some instances, the errorrebuked is from without thechurch: “thou hast tried themwhich say they are apostles, andare not, and hast found them li-ars” (Revelation 2:2.); ”thouhatest the deeds of the Nicolai-tanes, which I also hate” (Rev-elation 2:6.); and I know the blas-phemy of them which say theyare Jews, and are not, but are thesynagogue of Satan.” (Revelation2:9.)

16 In other instances the errorrebuked is within the church:“thou hast there them that hold thedoctrine of Balaam” (Revelation2:14.); “strengthen the thingswhich remain, that are ready todie” (Revelation 3:2.); “becausethou sayest, I am rich, and haveneed of nothing; and knowest notthat thou art wretched, and mis-erable, and poor, and blind, andnaked. . .” (Revelation 3:17.)

17 The Revelator readily com-mends the good: “I know thyworks, and thy labour, and thy

patience. . .” (Revelation 2:2.);“thou hast a little strength, andhast kept my word, and hast notdenied my name” (Revelation3:8.). “Because thou hast kept theword of my patience, I also willkeep thee from the hour of temp-tation” (Revelation 3:10.)

18 The Revelator reproves, re-bukes, and exhorts the churchesto hold fast to demonstration,with the promise of certain vic-tory “to him that overcometh.”

20 The message is from the in-corporeal Christ, Truth, opera-tive within their midst.

21 Each letter closes with theadmonition, “He that hath an ear,let him hear what the Spirit saithunto the churches.”

THE FIRST VISION

THE THRONE AND THE LAMB

SPIRITUAL SENSE DISCERNS THE TRUTHOF BEING


“The Lord shall be king over all the earth: in that day shallthere be one Lord, and his name one.”

Zechariah 14:9.

“Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of theworld.” John 1:29.

Truth is revealed. It needs only to be practiced.Science and Health 174:20.

Lamb of God. The spiritual idea of Love; self-imolation;innocence and purity; sacrifice.

THE FIRST VISION1 The first vision, or the first

step — as outlined in the synop-sis of the Preface — is the state-ment of the truth of Being, andof what the truth of Being in-cludes.

2 The truth of Being beginswith the statement that God is su-preme.

3 Then follows a perfect state-ment of Principle and Principle’sidea.

4 From this statement unfolds ascientific knowledge of God andGod’s creation of spiritual man.

5 The Revelator presents thesefacts with the portrayal of athrone and One on the throne;twenty-four elders about thethrone; seven lamps of fire; fourbeasts and a sea of glass; allthings created for God; a booksealed with seven seals; andkings and priests.

6 We find the truth of Beingfully explained in the openingpages of “Recapitulation,” chap-ter 14 of Science and Health.

7 The twenty-four elders cor-respond to the twenty-four ques-tions and answers in “Recapitu-

lation.”8 The seven lamps of fire burn-

ing before the throne are theseven synonyms for God.

9 The four beasts are the greatverities of being, and the sea ofglass is the reflection of God.

31 When the Lamb has taken the“little book,” the four living be-ings and the four and twenty el-ders worship in reverence, andhumility.

“(As it is written, I have made thee a father of many nations[Abraham],) before him whom he believed, even God, whoquickeneth the dead, and calleth those things which be notas though they were.”

A knowledge of error and of its operations must precedethat understanding of Truth which destroys error, until theentire mortal, material error finally disappears, and the eter-nal verity, man created by and of Spirit, is understood andrecognized as the true likeness of his Maker.


In the quiet sanctuary of earnest longings, we must deny sinand plead God’s allness. We must resolve to take up thecross, and go forth with honest hearts to work and watch forwisdom, Truth, and Love. We must “pray without ceasing.”Such prayer is answered, in so far as we put our desires intopractice. The Master’s injunction is, that we pray in secretand let our lives attest our sincerity.




THE SECOND VISION1 In the denials of error and

the affirmations of truth that theRevelator presents in the secondvision, the Lamb opens the sevenseals of error and the Angel sealsthe servants with the “seal of theliving God.”

2 The Foreword, preceding thisvision, provides the affirmationsof truth for the opening of theseven seals of error.

3 It includes the perfect assur-ance of the ability of the Lamb— Christ, Truth — to uncovererror; it is a perfect demonsrationof the at-one-ment of Principleand its ideas; it is an acknowl-edgment of the perfection andallness of God and His creation.

4 These spiritual affirmationsbring the uncovering of error thatis essential, in order to seeerror’s nothingness.

5 This realization of Truth ispresented by means of apocalyp-tic symbols.

6 The “voice of many angels”proclaims the worthiness of theLamb to receive seven-foldpraise.

ing, and honour, and glory, andpower” to the One enthroned andto the Lamb, forever.

8 Four beasts — four living be-ings — say “amen,” and the fourand twenty elders worship inunity, reverence, and humility.

9 The errors disclosed in theorder of the opening of the seals,by Christ, Truth, are (1) lust; (2)revenge; (3) covetousness; (4)envy; (5) self-righteousness; (6)self-will; and (7) self-igno-rance.

10 The first four errors are pre-sented by four horsemen; thefifth, by those slain for the Wordof God; the sixth, by a mightyearthquake and darkness; thenfollowing the opening of the sev-enth seal, there comes a healingand restful calm.

11 The seals are opened in thepresence of the four great veri-ties of Being — Omnipotence,Omniscience, Omnipresence, andOmniaction, — whereby thenothingness of the seals is re-vealed.

12 Between the opening of thesixth and the seventh seals, theaffirmations of Truth, are pre-sented by means of the sealingof the servants of God.

13 Mind’s true ideas, separatedfrom false beliefs, are sealedwith the “seal of the living God.”

14 John writes, “I saw four an-gels standing on the four cornersof the earth, holding the fourwinds of the earth, that the windshould not blow on the earth, noron the sea, nor on any tree.”

15 According to the prevailingbelief of the time (that the earthwas flat and square), the fourcorners of the square symbolizethe outermost boundary of theearth.

16 The four angels restrainingthe four winds, signify the con-scious protection of Truth — the“be not afraid” of the Christ.

17 All of God’s ideas are seento be indestructible — stampedwith the reality of divinity.

18 Seen to be infinite in num-ber; they unite in reflecting per-fect praise.

19 Purified by Christ, Truth,they are at-one with God.

20 Having the Mind of Christ,they continually express God.

21 They are sustained by theChrist, Truth, and maintained byGod.

22 After the sealing of the ser-vants, the seventh error is dis-

closed by Christ, Truth, and si-lence follows.

23 The denials of error andthe affirmations of Truth si-lence material sense.

24 Truth has removed theseven-fold seal of ignorance fromthe work of God, and the facts ofbeing are revealed.

25 whenever Christ Jesushealed the sick, transformed thesinning, and raised the dead, hewas breaking the seals of errorand revealing the truth of being.

26 More than once he said toone thus healed, “See thou tellno man.”

27 Why was silence enjoined?”28 Was it not that he who that

day had witnessed the presenceand power of the Christ mightponder the verities of being be-fore beginning for himself thewarfare of demonstration — theproof that Christ, Truth, had in-deed come to his consciousness?

29 It is the calm: — eloquentwith prayer and praise, — theopposite of self-ignorance, —replete with the discernment ofthe Christ.

30 The half hour of restful si-lence is followed by the trumpetcalls of the Revelation.


THE THIRD VISION

THE SEVEN TRUMPETS OF TRUTH

THE PROOF OF MATTER’S NOTHINGNESSAND SPIRIT’S ALLNESS PRODUCES MENTALCHEMICALIZATION, THEN REVELATION BY

WOMAN


“It came to pass, then the people heard the sound of thetrumpet, and the people shouted with a great shout, that thewall fell down flat, so that the people went up into the city,every man straight before him, and they took the city.”

Joshua 6:20

“In the days of the voice of the seventh angel, when he shallbegin to sound, the mystery of God should be finished, as hehath declared to his servants the prophets.” Revelation 10:7


This material world is even now becoming the arena forconflicting forces. On one side there will be discord anddismay; on the other side there will be Science and peace.the breaking up of material beliefs may seem to be famineand pestilence, want and woe, sin, sickness, and death, whichassume new phases until their nothingness appears. Thesedisturbances will continue until the end of error, when alldiscord will be swallowed up in spiritual Truth.


Marvels, calamities, and sin will much more abound as truthurges upon mortals its resisted claims; but the awful daringof sin destroys sin, and forshadows the triumph of truth. Godwill over-turn, over-turn, over-turn, until “He come whoseright is is.” Science and Health 223:28-32


CHAPTER 5[Rev. 8:2-11:19.]

THE THIRD VISION1 The trumpets of Truth her-

ald the revelation to woman.2 The process of demonstrat-

ing the nothingness of matter andthe allness of Spirit brings men-tal chemicalization and preparesthought to receive the revelationof the “little book.”

3 The Foreword — the spiri-tual realization which precedesthis step in the order of spiritualunfoldment — is a prayer of con-secration and self-immolation.

4 The seven angels which weregiven seven trumpets “stood be-fore God.” They are angels ofHis presence.

7 Self-immolation, prayer, andgratitude rise above chemical-ization, to revelation.

8 “And the smoke of the in-cense, with the prayers of thesaints, ascended up before Godout of the angel’s hand.”

9 By means of a varied andunique symbolism, the Revelatordepicts the purifying chemical-ization brought about by the rev-elation of Christ, Truth.

10 The sounding of the trum-pets, affecting the different states

and stages of mortal mind, pro-duces different phases of chemi-cal-ization.

11 With the sounding of the firsttrumpet of Truth, hail and fire,symbols of divine correction andpurification, are cast upon theearth (material sense) with theresult that part of the trees andall the green grass are burned.Christ, Truth, (1) starts in ma-terialism a fire of purification.

12 The second angel sounds and“a great mountain burning withfire” is cast into the sea (hiddenerror) with the result that part ofthe creatures of the sea are de-stroyed. Christ, Truth, (2) setsmortal mind boiling to its owndestruction.

13 With the sounding of thethird trumpet “a great star, burn-ing as it were a lamp,” falls uponthe rivers and fountains with theresult that the waters are turnedto wormwood. Christ, Truth, (3)shows that material knowledgeis poisonous.

14 The fourth trumpet soundsand a smitten sun results in dark-ness. Christ, Truth, (4) dis-closes that material sense isdense ignorance.

sounds a star with the key opensthe bottomless pit, and out of thepit comes smoke, and out of thesmoke come swarms of locusts.

16 The Revelator fully de-scribes the plagues of the locusts,and thus symbolizes the tormentof erroneous human beliefs.

The great miracle, to human sense, is divine Love, and thegrand necessity of existence is to gain the true idea of whatconstitution the kingdom of heaven in man. This goal is neverreached while we hate our neighbor or entertain a false esti-mate of anyone whom God has appointed to voice His Word.Again, without a correct sense of its highest visible idea,we can never understand the divine Principle.



The impersonation of the spiritual idea had a brief history inthe earthly life of our Master; but “of his kingdom there shallbe no end.” For Christ, God’s idea, will eventually rule allnations and peoples — imperatively, absolutely, finally —with divine Science. This immaculate idea, represented firstby man and, according to the Revelator, last by woman, willbaptize with fire, and the fiery baptism will burn up thechaff of error with the fervent heat of Truth and Love, melt-ing and purifying even the gold of human character.



CHAPTER 6[Rev. 12:1-14:20.]

THE FOURTH VISION1 The revelation of the truth of

Being, the denial of error and theaffirmation and demonstration ofTruth, as portrayed by the first,second, and third visions, pre-pare consciousness for ChristianScience. (1) God’s revelation ofHimself through womanbrings forth Christian Science.

2 John presents the spiritualidea as “a woman clothed withthe sun.”

3 Christian Science, or this rev-elation, is typified by “a man-child.”

4 Error vainly resists this rev-elation.

CHAPTER 7[Rev. 15:1-18:24.]

THE FIFTH VISION1 The resistance of the carnal

mind to the Revelation of Sciencebrings the plagues of physicalsense.

2 By means of the vials ofwrath poured by the angels hav-ing the seven last plagues, Johnhas presented this resistance ofcarnal mind.

3 The angels with the sevenlast plagues are messengers ofTruth and Love.

4 They pour out the demandsof divine Principle.

5 In the Foreword, which pre-cedes the vision, spiritual sensediscerns that the plagues of senseare overcome (1) through spiri-tual reflection; (2) through ac-knowledging the allness andall-power of Truth; (3) throughlove for and the demonstrationsof Truth; (4) through the heal-ing work of divine Love inChristian Science.

6 The symbols by which thesemetaphysical facts are presentedinclude “a sea of glass mingledwith fire,” “the song of Moses,”“the song of the lamb,” and “thetabernacle of the testimony”

seven angels having the sevenlast plagues, their raiment ofwhite and girdles of gold signi-fying service within the sanctu-ary.

Truth will be to us “the resurrection and the life” only as itdestroys all error and the belief that Mind, the only immor-tality of man, can be fettered by the body, and Life be con-trolled by death.

Hold perpetually this thought, — that it is the spiritual idea,the Holy Ghost and Christ, which enables you to demon-strate, with scientific certainty, the rule of healing basedupon its divine Principle, Love, underlying, overlying, andencompassing all true being.

This kingdom of God “is within you,” — is within reach ofman’s consciousness here, and the spiritual idea reveals it.In divine Science, man possesses this recognition of har-mony consciously in proportion to his understanding of God.


This testimony of holy Writ sustains the fact in Science, thatthe heavens and earth to one human consciousness, that con-sciousness which God bestows, are spiritual, while to an-other, the unillumined human mind, the vision is material.This shows unmistakably that what the human mind termsmatter and spirit indicates states and stages of conscious-ness. THE SEVENTH VISION1 In the seventh step of the

metaphysical outline it is shownthat the demonstrations of Chris-tian Science make the truth ofBeing manifest in consciousness.

We are Christian Scientists, only as we quit our relianceupon that which is false and grasp the true. We are not Chris-tian Scientists until we leave all for Christ.



To-day the healing power of Truth is widely demonstratedas an immanent, eternal Science, instead of a phenomenalexhibition. Its appearing is the coming anew of the gospel of“on earth peace, good-will toward men.” This coming, aswas promised by the Master, is for its establishment as apermanent dispensation among men; but the mission of Chris-tian Science now, as in the time of its earlier demonstration,is not primarily one of physical healing. Now, as then, signsand wonders are wrought in the metaphysical healing ofphysical disease; but these signs are only to demonstrate itsdivine origin, — to attest the reality of the higher mission ofthe Christ-power to take away the sins of the world.



CHAPTER 10[Rev. 22:6-21.]

THE FINAL WORD1 As presented by the Revela-

tor, we have in the conclusionseven admonitions which for-ward the manifestation of Chris-tian Science: (1) practise the ru-diments; (2) worship not per-son, but Principle; (3) studythoroughly the letter; (4) obeythe divine commands; (5) tes-tify by fruitage; (6) imbibe thespiritual sense of life; (7) real-ize that the revelation of Chris-tian Science is complete, per-fect, and final.
