Welcome to week 2 of the summer term Year 6, we hope you have been able to enjoy some of the wonderful sunshine we’ve had over the past couple of days. As always, we hope that you are all keeping safe and well at home, helping out around the house and being kind and considerate to your families. We made our phone calls to you all again last week and we all loved getting the chance to have a chat and hear about all of the things you have been getting up to! We have uploaded the answers to the previous newsletters on to the websites so that you can go through and mark your own work. Try to see if you can correct any answers you may have got incorrect. We hope you enjoy the work we have set this week and all we ask is you try your best when completing it. Science - Evolution and Inheritance

In our next Science unit we are going to be learning about how living things on earth have changed over time and how characteristics are passed on from parents to their offspring. We will also be looking at adaptation (which you should already be familiar with from our recent Geography work) and how it may lead to evolution.

Task 1: Your first task is to complete the table of definitions which you can find on resource card 1 (page 11). This is a list of many of the scientific terms you will come across in this unit, so knowing their definitions will help you to complete further tasks. You can refer back to this at the end of the unit to remind yourself of everything you have learned.

Task 2: Watch the following video and complete the online activityhttps://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zvhhvcw/articles/z9qs4qt

Task 3: Watch the video about how the horse has evolved over time on resource card 2 (page 2) and complete some of your own research online. Using the information you have found, complete a comic strip showing how the horse has evolved. Use the comic strip on resource card 3 (page 13) as an example. Remember to make your comic strip vibrant with lots of colour!

Literacy Activities

For this week’s writing activities we would like you to first complete some research into the life of a famous performer. This could be an athlete, musician, dancer or sports person or any one who performs in front of an audience. You will be focussing on one particular moment in their life such as a key performance or competition, so you may choose to watch footage of this event on the internet, if it is available.

For example you could choose to research British diver Tom Daley who has competed successfully in diving in lots of major sporting events including the Commonwealth and the Olympic games.

TASK ONE: Your first task is to complete a biography of this person’s life, paying particular focus on their career/success. You will find a model biography on the next slide for you to base yours upon.

● Try to structure yours similarly to the model text but using headings appropriate to your own biography. ● You may choose to include pictures from the internet or your own illustrations.

TASK TWO: Your second task is to write a descriptive account of the opening moments of a key event in your famous person’s life. E.g. for Tom Daley this could be stepping on to the diving platform during the Summer 2016 Olympic Games.

● Write your account in the first person (as if you are the celebrity) and in the present tense (as if it is happening right at this moment). It is very much an internal monologue of your thoughts and feelings in this moment. (Think back to how we did this during our Ruin work).

● We have also included a model text on a following slide to show you how this can be done effectively.

Literacy Activity Two - Internal Monologue

I stop a few centimetres from the stage entrance with the whole company behind me and slowly take a deep, shaky breath. The stage is like a lit up arena waiting to be danced upon. The crowd, which seems to consist of a million people, erupt as I walk hesitantly out on to the stage. I give a little smile, and begin to dance.

Use this model text as a guide for writing your own descriptive account. To be successful you will need to:

● Write in the first person using personal pronouns (I, me, my).

● Write in the present tense using present tense verbs to document what is happening in the moment.

● Describe your thoughts, feelings and physical experiences e.g. sweaty palms, hairs tingling, trembling hands.

● Include descriptive language and literary devices for effect.

The Applause

I am in the dressing room with the music ringing in my ears. The small dressing room is bustling with tall skinny girls chattering and giggling, but all I can think of is the stage and the applause. My racing heart thuds underneath my silky tutu. Thud. Thud. Thud.

Then suddenly the stage director is at the door, calling my name. My name! My stomach gives an unexpected flutter and I take a deep breath. As the stage door swings open, I tell myself everything will be ok – nothing could possibly go wrong – I have been training for this since the age of three. Bulky men with headsets and clipboards keep ushering me into the right direction. Half of me wants to burst out onto stage and dance my heart out but the other half wants to run and hide. Adrenaline surges its way around my body like a rolling wave and rushes into my fingertips.

Literacy Activity Three - Reading Comprehension

Back home in Nottingham, the other girls had made fun of Robyn when she’d spent

her nights practising with her yew bow. They’d laughed when she’d said that she

wanted to rise up against Prince John. They’d sniggered when she’d said she

wanted to lead her own army. They were all wrong.

Over the years, Robyn became an accomplished thief. Even though she could steal

anything she wanted, she only stole what she really needed. Bread was her

speciality. She soon became known for her dark green hood that she wore over her

head and shoulders to conceal herself in a crowd. Eventually, the name Robyn

Hood stuck.

She’d often head out hunting in the Prince’s forest that surrounded the city. The

royal deer were sacred and hunting them was punishable by death. This didn’t stop

Robyn though, and soon a band of other misfits started to tag along with her hunts.

Inevitably she was caught. Instead of sentencing such a young girl to death, the

Prince took pity on her and gave her a choice. She could marry the Prince, or live as

an outlaw in the forest. The Prince was a hideous and unkind man, and so Robyn’s

decision was easy. The Prince never forgave the snub and swore revenge on the girl

and any who followed her.

Read the extract ‘Robyn Hood’ then answer the comprehension questions on the next slide.

Robyn feared for her safety. Luckily, a giant girl named

Joan stood by her side. As tall as a bear and just as strong,

“Little” Joan was fiercely loyal. Thinking back to the girls

who had laughed at her, Robyn now set out recruiting an

army of rebels who would fight for her against the Prince.

It took many years, but she eventually had a group large

enough and loyal enough to start to hit the Prince hard.

They started by holding up his waggons and stealing his

gold. After taking their cut of the bounty, the rest was

given back to the people of Sherwood.

Legend of the hooded maiden and bear-girl stalked

through the knights of Nottingham. Not a day went by

where their feats weren’t exaggerated even further. With

Robyn’s talent with her bow and Joan’s devastating

quarterstaff, there wasn’t a man in the county who would

face them willingly.

Literacy Activity Three

1. List the ways that the other girls had responded

to Robyn wanting to defeat Prince John.

2. Robyn is described as an ‘accomplished’’ thief.

What does this word suggest about her skills?

3. What can we infer about Robyn’s personality when

she continued to hunt deer despite it being against

the law? Give two traits.

4. In paragraph 3, which word is closest in meaning

to ignore/disregard?

5. What simile does the author use to describe the

new character Joan to the reader?

6. How did Prince John feel when he heard about

Robyn? What tells you this?

7. Make a prediction of what you think will happen

next in the story.

Soon, word of the renegades reached the ear of Prince John. All of his

attention now focused on reaping vengeance on his foe. His brother, King

Richard, was fighting in the Crusades in the east along with most of the army,

but he had enough soldiers to lead a siege on Robyn’s woodland hideout.

Stars were scattered across the night sky like diamonds on a jeweller’s canvas

when his men set out. What Prince John didn’t know was that one of Robyn’s

merry maidens was the sister of one of his guards. The night before, a message

had been sent to Robyn, and she had fled. She didn’t go far. Instead, her band

of rebel girls doubled back in the forest until they formed a silent net around

Prince John and his men. The first thing they knew about this trap was the

sound of a heavy yew bow creaking under the strain of a drawn string.

Write a definition for each of these key scientific terms which you will come across throughout this unit.

Some may be familiar to you, so you may choose to write a sentence or two in your own words.

For any unfamiliar terms, use a dictionary to find a definition. By the end of the unit you should have a much better understanding of their meaning.
