We’re Five!

In January 2015 Action Drill and Blast turned FIVE.

What started out as a bit of an idea in late 2009 to start up a new Drill and Blast Company materialised into the first ADB employee Mr Paul Guthrie commencing as ADBs first employee in January 2010. With the strong support and guidance from Willie Rooney (MD NRW Civil and Mining) we quickly established ourselves in the industry as the new up and comers.

Our workforce grew so that by the end of 2010 we had 53 people working for us. Interestingly if you look at the names of those 53 people, 28 of them are still with us. That is right 53% of our inaugural workforce are still with us. Not bad for what is known as a bit of a transient industry!

Some said we would struggle to compete with the “big boys” but I am pleased to say they were wrong. We can proudly say we have already become the second largest, specialist drill and blast contractor in Australia, and we haven’t finished yet.

To celebrate our fifth birthday we will be presenting people who have been with us 5 years with a 5 year medallion in the month of their anniversary. So far we have presented 15 medals (in date order): Paul Guthrie; Zack Carnegie-Smith; Laurie Dunstall; Russell Dagnall; Tim Jennis; Anthony Ruffin; Damien Gorman; Grantley Butcher; Warren Fair; Mason Evans; Don Ives; Ivon James; Peter Maddocks; Peter Goodlad; and Phil Walters.

In the last five years we have built a team that, I will vigorously argue with anyone, is the best in the world at what we do – which is delivering good drill and blast services to our clients in a professional, efficient and above all else – SAFE manner.

I think we have done some very positive things to build a team that is proud to be a part of the ADB family.

We should all be proud of fine achievements such as:

1. LTIFR and MTIFR of ZERO

2. Vision and Values – SITI. I doubt there is one person in our company that cannot recite our four values. How many other companies can make that boast?

3. ActionSAFE – Our whole safety system – it is world beating. It sets the standards others should follow.

4. You Rock – Recognising when your mates have done well.

5. SITI Leadership award is now in its second year – Phil Walters won the inaugural prize and Pam Davidson is our latest winner. This award is recognition by peers of the inspirational leadership we have in our company.

As we all know we cannot rest on our laurels. Especially today. Times are as tough in our industry as many have ever experienced. But there are two ways us contractors can view this tough cycle – contractors who didn’t do their homework and who have run out of ideas who therefore feel threatened. Then there are contractors who have great people, the best gear, industry leading systems, and who are brimming with new ideas – they will see this stage of our mining cycle as merely a challenge!

I believe that because of all the hard work we have all put in over the last five years we are perfectly placed to take advantage of the tough times. That doesn’t mean it will be easy or that anything will fall into our lap but we have all the right pieces in play. It is up to all of us to simply make sure that we stick to our script, and we keep doing the good things well, and we keep striving to improve in everything that we do.

Good times will return – we deserve it!

SECOND QUARTER WINNERS!Congratulations to this quarter’s overall winner of the $2,500 travel voucher, Ron Machen, Driller at Cloudbreak. Peter Mayger nominated Ron for Safety: After arriving at a new drill pattern, Ron noticed unstable rocks on the wall above where there were holes to be drilled. He moved to a different location and notified his Supervisor of the hazard. Other winning individual nominees for this quarter will receive $100 vouchers and are listed below:

Ron Machen with Damien Gorman, Operations Manager.

Steve Milentis, Cloudbreak for Innovation Nominated through the Opportunity for Improvment (OFI) System)Steve was responsible for recognising, and driving the team, to fix an issue with switches on the PV275 rigs. This OFI has been implemented and work orders are being rolled out to upgrade our fleet.

Shaun Dicken, Brockman Access Road for Safety / Integrity Nominated by Frank GrobShaun was nominated for consistently handing in good quality Take 5’s for every task, outlining numerous hazards and controls. He has averaged seven Take 5’s per day over the past three weeks since arriving at the project. One hazard identified in the process, was a past blast power trough, which Shaun stayed back with an IT loader to fill in and to make the area safe.

Darren Ferriday, Middlemount for Safety & Innovation Nominated by Russell DagnallA chain security gate had been installed at the truck entrance to site. The chain link and padlock were the connection to the loop on the stop sign pole. This was very heavy and difficult to lock whilst trying to keep the chain tension. Darren manufactured and installed a hook to make the task more user friendly and eliminated the chance of strain injury.

Rob Radosevich, Cloudbreak for Safety Nominated by Rob DeskerRob spotted a fire hazard on LV64 and rectified it immediately (spill kit bin close to operating exhaust of Gurney).

Shaun Kelly, Karara for Safety & Teamwork Nominated through the OFI SystemInvented a stand for loading new drill rods, which acts as a frame to support the rod and keeps personnel out of the way.

Hartley Strugnell, Belmont for Teamwork / Innovation Nominated by Dean StoneyWhen asked to focus on a long term defect (fuel dilution), Hartley looked into the job and identified problems with the diagnosis equipment. He then rectified diagnosis and led teams to fault find, report and repair.

Wayne Townsend, Cloudbreak for Integrity Nominated by Darryn MoraWayne watches what is going on around him and is not afraid to speak up. Wayne noticed N/S had used the wrong map by looking at other rig drilling and realised it was drilling deeper holes.

REWARDING TEAMWORKTeamwork is nominated frequently across the company.

Not surprisingly, an entire team of people are often nominated and it is impossible to reward the team using a single $100 voucher prize.

The You Rock Committee has now decided that teamwork deserves its own reward and, from this quarter on, any team activity that is deemed to be a winning nomination will see each team member receive a unique “trophy” gift.

The first team that will receive this new prize is the Middlemount team nominated (below) by Peter Allen.

Matt Garner, Anthony Laracy and Austin Cameron, Middlemount for Safety & Teamwork.

With a large storm approaching, the team ensured all equipment was moved to a safe location off a drill bench that was prone to slips and had difficult access. This was done without instruction and included quick repair of a disabled drill.

Don’t forget we record every nomination received in a database and consistent good quality behaviour may be recognised by the committee with a “wild card” entry into the 5th Quarter competition.

All prizes and certificates will be presented to the recipient as soon as possible.

For any questions please email [email protected].

• One overall winner each quarter will receive a $2,500 travel voucher including the 5th Quarter entries for consistent performance over the entire year.

• Individual winners will receive a $100 prepaid Visa card and certificate.

• The nominator for the winning nominations will receive a $100 prepaid Visa card.

2015 MANAGEMENT SEMINARBy Gillian Oliver, Executive Assistant

In February each year Action Drill & Blast (ADB) endeavours to get as many of our management personnel together to discuss our successes and challenges of the previous year and to look ahead and plan for the challenges and opportunities of the next.

This year we successfully gathered 36 of the leadership team in the conference facilities at the Pagoda Como hotel for two days.

There was good representation from all areas of the organisation which ensured plenty of opportunities for everyone to catch up and learn what their colleagues in different parts of the company have been up to over the last 12 months.

As well as reviewing our safety and production performance, this year the agenda focussed on celebrating our five years of success, learning about the way ADB markets itself to the world and planning for our continued success.

GLEN TURNERBy Samantha Caldwell, HR Advisor

17 March 1981 – 6 February 2015

On 6 February 2015, Glen Turner suffered a surfing accident at Smiths Beach, Yallingup, which sadly took his life. Glen was an Action Drill & Blast (ADB) MPU Operator and an integral part of ADB’s North Star team. He was renowned for his knowledge, experience and positive approach to life.

The funeral service last month was extremely well attended at the Port Bouvard Surf Life Saving Club, with an emotional send off from his surfing mates via a ‘paddle-out farewell’.

Nearly $10,000 has been donated to Glen’s family and they sincerely appreciate your kindness.

In October, Action Drill & Blast completed the stage 2 audit process for OHSAS 18001 Occupational Health and Safety Management, ISO 9001 Quality Management Systems and AS/NZS 4801 Safety Management Systems completed by British Standards Institution (BSI).

The auditor has recommended certification with the results forwarded to JAS-ANZ for official registration which we expect to receive very soon.

This has been a huge undertaking by the OHS and QA team members and is a fantastic outcome. Well done team!

SCHRAR COMMUNITY ACTIONBy Samantha Caldwell, HR Advisor

Second Chance Horse Rescue and Rehabilitation (SCHRAR), an incorporated, non-profit, self-funded organisation, dedicated to the well-being of equines in WA, received 23% of your votes for this month’s Community Action. Our $345 donation will go toward rescuing, rehabilitating and re-homing neglected horses.

SCHRAR seeks to rescue and care for neglected or abandoned horses who have been starved of food, water and shelter, whose hooves have been neglected resulting in lameness, have not had illness and injury cared for by vets/carers or have been abused.

Horses and ponies are expensive to keep and maintain. Many horses are produced by the racing industry and subsequently are found to be too slow and fall into the hands of inexperienced owners. These kind, accepting, noble creatures deserve a second chance when fate has been unkind.

On the right you will see one of the incredible transformations by SCHRAR, Timelord.

Timelord was one of the most heartbreaking and severe cases of neglect that SCHRAR had seen. He was with a group of over 40 horses and donkeys in an extreme hoarding case. All of the horses had been badly neglected, starving and without water. Through the tireless efforts of his foster carer, Timelord was nursed back to health and was adopted in 2010 by a wonderful family.

At a fundraiser horse show at Whiteman Park on 12 April, SCHRAR will display ADB signage around the ring to say thank you for the donation. There are over 200 West Australian riders competing who will all get to see what a great bunch the ADB team are for supporting this amazing cause. Thanks everyone!

WHAT A BLAST! WALA GEL – HYBRID EXPLOSIVE PRODUCT By Anthony Ruffin, Area Manager WA & NT

In order to remain competitive in a challenging market, Action Drill & Blast (ADB) has constantly focused on avenues of explosives supply. In particular, secure access to a sensitised wet bulk explosive which we can deliver to the hole through our own MPU trucks.

15 months ago, ADB trialled WALA Hybrid Bulk Explosive at Isaac Plains with considerable success, particularly around the explosive energy generated with the blasts.

The product was then brought to WA in early 2014 and ADB MPU trucks were modified to handle the WALA and chemical gassing process for the Roy Hill Rail Project. Some teething problems were encountered as we learned the ways of the WALA, particularly where it’s considerable energy output could be hard to manage. However, the challenges were overcome and the project would not have been successful without a wet blasting solution given all the unexpected water problems.

In true ADB style, the team at Roy Hill worked together to quickly adapt and innovate their way through the

challenges and ended up with a world class outcome. Thanks to Paul Bolger, Drill and Blast Supervisor, and Adam Brendish, Blasting Specialist, for their huge contribution to our success with WALA at the Roy Hill Rail Project.

Since the Project, we’ve been working on our capability to deliver WALA to sites around the Pilbara from our Port Hedland Explosives and DG storage. The product is ideal for quarry locations and loves hard rock. Our initial quarry customers have all been very pleased with their fragmentation results and we expect the product to give us a real edge in hard rock mining projects where explosives supply can be included in the contract.

SCOTT LANGLEY FUNDBy Samantha Caldwell, HR Advisor

When Scott Langley, Action Drill & Blast Driller at Cloudbreak, was experiencing illness and strange symptoms, multiple doctors and specialists were left scratching their heads. In search of a diagnosis, Scott decided he would leave work and after receiving a referral to the one specialist in Australia who understood, Scott held the key to his diagnosis – Lyme disease.

Post diagnosis, Scott faced further challenges when the Australian medical community and government refused to acknowledge that the tick-borne disease existed in Australia. It is known as a ‘Northern hemisphere disease’ and little-to-no understanding of it exists here. A blood test was conducted, but the laboratories didn’t have sophisticated methodology. A second sample was sent to Germany and six weeks later his diagnosis was confirmed.

Through research, Scott discovered a treatment in Germany involving a deep penetrating heating process where the patient undergoes anesthetic and their body is heated to a temperature of 42 degrees celsius. The borellia bacteria (found in Lyme Disease patients) die at 41.5 degrees celsius.

When workmates heard Scott’s treatment and travel costs would exceed $20,000 the ADB team stepped in to help. Within eight weeks of fundraising the target was achieved and over $21,000 was raised! Funds raised included substantial personal donations from Scott’s ADB friends and colleagues; social club contributions; and dedicated time and effort from lots of people, especially Jessica Dore in HR who coordinated most of the activities.

With a new baby on the way, a sick mum and an inability to work, Scott was very grateful for the support and in November 2014, he journeyed to Germany for the

much-needed treatment. On returning home, he moved to Queensland to be closer to his sick mum, saw the arrival of his second, healthy baby son and waited for the treatment to kick in.

At the last report his symptoms had significantly lessened and he is on the road to recovery. He doesn’t know how long it will take, but he knows he will get there – He is absolutely determined to be kicking the footy with his boys in no time at all.

Scott sends an enormous thanks to the people at Action Drill & Blast, without their help and support the journey would have been much longer and harder. He sends his appreciation, not just for himself, but for what ADB crews have done for his family.

Action DB team – You ROCK!

1000 DAYS LTI FREE By David Bereczky, HSEQ Manager

On Saturday, 20 December 2014, our Action Drill & Blast (ADB) team achieved 1000 days Lost Time Injury (LTI) free. Congratulations to the entire team on this achievement.

ADB has a great values-based safety culture which has been developed and implemented over a number of years. It is because of you striving to work the ActionSAFE way that we have achieved such a significant milestone within the business. We look forward to continuing the journey and maintaining our safety focus on being injury and incident free well into the future.

Well Done Everybody!

consumer recognized BSI Kitemark™, BSI was more than pleased to join Action Drill & Blast in the journey toward international certification to OHSAS18801, AS/NZS4801 and ISO9001.

Benefits of certification to health, safety and quality ISO standards include:

• Reassurance to customers that our business runs safely and efficiently and is a reliable partner to work with;

• management systems that are verified by third parties against an internationally recognised standard;

• providing enhanced customer satisfaction;

• increased market share through access to new markets and cross reference against competitors; and

• cost savings by optimising operations.

Congratulations to our HSEQ team for their efforts to attain these Standards.

QUEENSLAND OFFICE RELOCATION By Mark Hall, Area Manager

In January 2015, Action Drill & Blast relocated the Rockhampton regional office to Brisbane. The team have moved into premises, shared with NRW, in Adelaide Street which is a great location in amongst a lot of the big miners who are active on the East Coast.

“The benefit is being within close proximity to current and future clients, also direct flights to the Bowen Basin instead of driving – reducing risks associated with driving and increasing work time through not being at the wheel of a car,” says Mark Hall, Area Manager.

ADB staff members that are located in the Brisbane office:

• Mark Hall, Area Manager

• Ashlea Morgan, HR Officer

• Brian Sparkes, Business Development Coordinator

• Russell Johnson, Maintenance Supervisor

• Michael Wiseman, Engineer

• Jeffrey Sleep, Operations Manager

• Michelle Batty, Admin short term

If you’re in Brisbane, pop in and say G’Day, Level 16, 300 Adelaide Street, Brisbane.
