opportunities and threats facing EWI and in particular EWI Wichita – and create a strategy to enhance the return on investment for our member firms.

Focus on the desired outcomes led to a list of SMART goals and action items that were necessary to manage change throughout the Wichita Chapter. With thoughtful input from our chapter advisors, it was determined that the most efficient way to institute change was to realign committees under the direction of the board leadership so the committee’s focus would be on the same desired outcomes as the board. The reassignment of our Director-at-Large position from Retention & Orientation to EWI Foundation was to allow proper attention to be given the majority of the wealth of the organization. Leadership was committed to seeing the change through-well aware of the time commitment required. Nine months later, we are well on our way, not without the unforeseen hiccup, and not without sacrifice.

In additional to the realignment of committees under directors, several new committees were established, and some were abandoned. The new committees facilitate the Professional Development & Community Outreach activities for the chapter.

With Gratitude:

EWI would not exist without its member firms. Thanks to all who reaffirmed and renewed your commitment to EWI this year. We understand and appreciate that firms have choices with whom they affiliate and strive to meet the expectations of your leadership.

As we began this current year focused on updating and renovating EWI - Wichita, many of the changes were developed at the directives enumerated in the EWI Standards of Excellence. As part of this process, we are actively seeking Executives who may be willing to serve on the EWI Wichita - Executive Advisory Council. EWI recognizes the importance of firm executives in the ongoing success of its chapters. This board is to provide advice and recommendation to the Chapter Board of Directors in the areas of leadership, chapter growth, community outreach, fiscal responsibility, and professional development. The Executive Advisory Board is to be comprised of at least three member firm executives whose primary responsibilities are to:

• Provide advice on leadership best practices • Support the chapter’s philanthropic and educational efforts in the community • Provide input on investment decisions for the EWI Wichita Scholarship Funds • Be willing to reach out to peers to help promote EWI, recruit speakers, and grow membership • Provide guidance and recommendations on chapter issues as requested by the board

Terms are three years in length, and there are attendance requirements at two EWI board meetings each year, so there would be necessary engagement. Thanks to Martha Linsner, TCK, Judy Worrell, Berry Companies, and Carolyn Sayre, Carolyn Sayre’s Fine Jewelry who are currently serving as advisors. If you represent your firm as the executive/representative or have an executive who would like to be involved in this capacity, please call Jennifer Stephens, EWI 2013/2014 Chapter President, for particular information.

Executive Advisory Board

Much appreciation for all of the firms who rallied to underwrite the initial EWI workshop held in May this year. It is hoped that the success of this and future events will eliminate asks for additional support in the future. Since there was no budget for the event, the underwritten support helped alleviate the direct risk to the chapter. While some of the dollars were used on direct expenses for this event, others were used to create marketing and brand awareness pieces that will serve the chapter for many years to come .

Finally, special thanks go to the firms represented by our leadership team that understood the importance and value contributed by their representatives to EWI Wichita. The depth and breadth of the experience and engagement is absolutely crucial to the continued success of EWI Wichita. Those firms are: Associated Integrated Marketing, Center for Health and Wellness, Allen, Gibbs, & Houlik, L.C., City of Wichita, Meritrust Credit Union, Wichita Marriott, J.P. Weigand & Sons, Hyatt Regency Wichita, Wichita State University, Star Lumber & Supply, and Stoutheart Financial Group.

Leadership Advice

Star Lumber & Supply

When asked the question….

“What advice would you give someone going into a leadership position for the first time?” “First, I would offer my congratulations! I believe that this is always in order when a person is promoted into a leadership position for the first time. I would also wish them well, hoping that they enjoy the opportunity. What further advice that I might offer really depends on my role. For example, one of our G-4 family members was just promoted into a leadership position for the first time, and these are a couple thoughts that I passed on from more of a "mentor" position. I expressed my belief that strong leaders have the ability to leverage their talents among a broader team, rather than just what an individual might produce by themselves. The bigger, more challenging the team, the greater this leverage becomes. Leadership is not for everyone. But for those who are very good at motivating, coaching and leading, their rewards can be significant. I would also suggest that there be a clear understanding your role and expectations. Perform it well. Understand what is required for more responsibility. It will likely include being competent, versatile, producing quality on time, and the ability to solve issues quickly. Make it happen! And finally, I would suggest that new supervisors always follow the "golden rule", that is to always treat your team and all the teams around you with respect and the way that you would like to be treated. Start off on the right foot, play the game correctly, and you'll be glad that you did!”

About Star Lumber & its Products & Services: Star Lumber is a private family business, founded in 1939 by Earl Goebel. Current consolidated sales are $106 million with about 320 employees distributed throughout Kansas and Oklahoma. Approximately 90% of sales are to professional contractors. Star’s primary activities include sales, manufacturing, installation and distribution of building materials and flooring products. Our three operating groups include Building Materials, Flooring & Decorating and Perfection Structural Components, LLC. Star has facilities in Wichita and Manhattan, Kansas, as well as a flooring operation in Oklahoma City. As a "sister company" Star Lumber Leasing, LLC owns and leases an array of Star properties and other related outside investments. Although Star's primary focus is marketing to professional contractors, Star's retail focus is targeted at home projects. Our strength comes when retail customers want similar high quality products and services as the pro. For example, Star would enjoy the opportunity to earn your business if you are considering a flooring project, kitchen remodel, window replacement, basement finish, exterior deck or some other project that is similar to what we furnish to the pros on a daily basis.

Admirable Qualities

Wichita State University

When asked the question….

“What qualities are shared in the people you admire?” Dr. Bardo responded: • Integrity. They are honest and follow-through

• Communication-centered. They listen and talk. They think about the

impact of their communications.

• “In it for the greater good.” The work they do, even if it pays well, is not about the money, it is about making things better.

• Humane. They recognize the value of being human.

• Forgiving of mistakes. We all make them; how we respond is more important than whether we made a mistake.

• Able to laugh and move on when dealing with problems. Keeping a sense of humor about oneself and one’s situation is important.

• Goal directed. Accomplishing something important is in their DNA. Important may involve helping a single child learn to read or developing plans for saving the American economy. The goal does not have to be big, but it does make a difference and therefore it is important.

• Willing to teach. We all have limited time on earth; teaching others, either formally or informally, is crucial. Some of the best teachers with whom I have worked were Boy Scout leaders who were blue collar workers. Other teachers had Ph.D.’s. The common element was the willingness to share knowledge. To be a good teacher, one has to have respect for, and value, others.

Successful Community Networking Meritrust Credit Union

When asked the question….

“What have you found successful in your business for networking in the community?” Mr. Nastars responded: I believe it is engagement and commitment. With an organization the size of Meritrust, it is absolutely critical that we are engaged in the community and commit our resources and talent to help with community development activities. This is best accomplished through a strong commitment by our leadership to finding organizations in the community that reflect their passions and where they can leverage their talents and skills. This could be serving on local boards, leading community projects or volunteering time on community activities. In fact, relationships are part of our Mission and finding ways to develop strong relationships is part of our strategic plan. Through this commitment, we can best connect and network with other community leaders. Active networking by each of our Meritrust leaders will allow us to best serve our community and offer us a network of valuable relationships that will help make our organization stronger as well.

Continuing Leadership Development - Center for Health & Wellness

When asked the question….“What are you doing to ensure you continue to grow and develop as a leader?,” Ms. Lovelady responded:

“The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others” is a famous quote by Mahatma Gandhi that represents the essence of leadership. Leadership equates to service. Service is at the core of successful leadership. It is imperative that a leader sees themselves as a role model that is directly involved with those that are being lead. A great leader is able to connect, inspire, motivate and dig trenches with those that are following them. Service and leadership are intrinsically dependent on the other.

I consider myself a leader that is a member of the team. Not the most important member, but the one that will step forward when needed on behalf of the team. My leadership style is collaborative yet empowering. It is important to me that those being lead feel engaged. Public health leadership is important because public health leaders are advocates for those in the community that are disadvantaged and at-risk of health disparities impacting their quality of life. There are issues involving political, socioeconomic, educational, cultural, religious, etc. that impact the overall health of the community and it is imperative that leaders are specifically trained to advocate on behalf of its citizens.

In addition to serving those that I have the honor to lead, each year funds are designated for staff development and every employee has the opportunity to attend personal development trainings. I participate each year in leadership focused initiatives such as peer coaching/mentoring, leadership conferences/workshops, reading books about current issues in leadership, etc. Currently, I am participating in the Kansas Leadership Center’s Visioneering Health Alliance through the Kansas Health Foundation and the Sunflower Foundation’s Advocacy Fellowship Program. Both programs are allowing me reflect on my personal growth as a leader.

Public health leaders are performing a service to the overall community. They are providing a life-altering service to others – advocacy, education, protection, and empowerment. “The future depends on what we do today” is another famous quote by Mahatma Gandhi. The future of the health of mankind depends on the training and expertise of today’s public health leaders.

About the Kansas Health Foundation: The Kansas Health Foundation is a health philanthropy with the resources, stability and vision to strengthen Kansas, igniting the promise of a better quality of life at a time when limited well-being affects every Kansas community. KHF believes it is far more beneficial to focus on preventing disease and illness before it occurs, and, in concert with its partners, seeks evidence-based grant-making solutions in five primary funding areas: healthy living, public health, health data and information, community philanthropy and civic leadership. Kansas Health Foundation

When asked the question…. “How do you help people understand the culture of your organization?”

Mr. Coen responded:

It is one thing to tell someone who you are or what you do, but it’s quite another to live out your mission every day. At the Kansas Health Foundation, our mission is to improve the health of all Kansans. We strive daily through our grant making, our partnerships and our decisions, to forge a future where Kansas is the healthiest, most productive, most livable state in the nation. And those efforts begin in our own offices with our own employees. In recent years we have made significant strides in how we model a healthy environment. From providing healthy snacks in the office and encouraging daily physical activity, to participating in corporate YMCA challenges and taking breaks from meetings to stand and stretch, the Foundation has implemented numerous ways to promote and encourage healthy living. This “leadership by example” approach is particularly applicable to worksite wellness, as in 2011 we engaged partners throughout the state for our WorkWell Kansas program, which has allowed us to work with business leaders in 25 communities to strengthen workplace health and wellness policies. This is just one example of how we, at the Kansas Health Foundation, seek to always “walk the walk” when it comes to health. Whether we’re promoting health and wellness in our schools, neighborhoods and workplaces, growing leaders in our communities, inspiring decision makers or acting as a voice for healthy public policy, we know that before we can ask others to take the steps necessary to build a healthier Kansas, we must first model those behaviors ourselves.

When asked the question…. What is a leadership practice that you do different from most people?

Mr. Summers responded:

I have a 3 prong approach to leadership. I believe the most important components of leadership are CULTURE, EXPECTATIONS, and FOLLOW UP. As a leader, you MUST first establish a culture of ENERGY, ENTHUSIASM, and WINNING. Once your culture is established, then you set the expectations for communication, behavior, and performance. When your culture is positive and the people in the organization understand the expectations…then the last part is follow up. Great Leadership requires a consistent process for measuring progress and inspecting performance. The follow up and inspection process is what people in an organization WANT and NEED. People want to know how well they are doing and what they need to improve upon.

When asked the question….

“How do you encourage creative thinking within your organization?”

Mr. Clevenger responded:

Fostering creative thinking in a bank setting might seem to be a bit oxymoronic. There are certainly days when I find myself wondering if it’s possible given the current regulatory landscape. But, then we have a great idea bubble up and I realize we bankers can be pretty creative at times. In my opinion, there are two keys to having creativity throughout Commerce Bank of Wichita. First, we strive to have an organization that knows it does not have all of the answers all of the time. In other words, when we are at our best we are open to change and the creativity that drives it. Second, we try to have all of our employees be engaged with our bosses: our customers. Most of the really great ideas have come from bankers working with customers and thinking about how we could do a better job for them, or how we could make our bankers better prepared to serve them. So, in short, we try to be open to new ideas that come from our bankers’ knowledge of their customers.

With over $50,000 in corpus, it was felt that this non-profit entity deserved the attention of a EWI Director devoted to it’s over site. While the official name remains Business and Career Development Program, (B/C/DP), corporate has begun to refer to this as EWI Foundation. As you may recall, the Reading Rally activities and the scholarships are funded by our non-profit entity – and the funds remain segregated for that purpose. To help Pat:

READING RALLY – Pam Fullinwider, Wichita State University Foundation Once again, EWI Wichita has selected Colvin Elementary School as the location of our 2014/2015 Reading Rally.
