A MESSAGE FROM THE
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Thank you to all that attended and supported the Stillaguamish Senior Center’s Eighth Annual “Lifetime
Achievement Fundraising Breakfast”. Honoring a long time community volunteer Harley Robb.
Harley Robb was born in Arlington on October 3, 1922, the oldest of three children. Harley and his brother
Howard and sister Helen, both now deceased, all attended Arlington Schools. His sophomore year Harley was
president of his class of 1941. He played basketball and had a part in the school play.
During World War II Harley served in Europe with the 106th infantry Division. He fought in the Battle of the
Bulge. After the war Harley returned home to Arlington and opened an auto repair shop next to Robb Tire. In
1949 he married Delores Spring, and two daughters were born of the marriage: Janis and Lynn. Harley is very
proud of his daughters who both have college degrees and good careers.
In 1954 Harley closed his repair shop and went to work for the US Postal Service for the next twenty-eight
years, retiring in 1982. He has had many years of service to his community, beginning with coaching little
league baseball and active in the Masonic Lodge. In 1955 he was the Lodge’s Worshipful Master and served
as the Lodge’s treasurer for 30 years. In 1958 he was elected to the Arlington School Board and served until
1967.
When Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church decided it was ready for a new sanctuary, Harley chaired the building
committee that oversaw its construction. Today he serves as an usher in that church.
When the Arlington Pioneers decided to build its new museum, Harley volunteered to chair the building effort.
He still helps with group tours of the museum and is active on the board. Last month he was master of cere-
monies for the third time of the annual Pioneer Picnic.
When Delores died in 2009, the couple had been married for 53 years. She was also an active volunteer and
Harley was always there to help, be it a blood drive, Camp Fire girl activities, or at Church. Harley has served
as the treasurer of the Arlington Community Chest for over 40 years, helping to screen applications for assis-
tance with utilities and medical help. One of Harley’s hobbies today is woodworking. His basement is full of
beautifully articulated wood models of various construction vehicles.
For his lifelong service to our community and for his heroic service to our country, the Stillaguamish Senior
Center was pleased to honor Harley Robb with its Lifetime Achievement Award.
Sincerely,
Jo Olson, Executive Director

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (commonly known as ObamaCare) is in the
process of being launched this fall and will begin enrolling people in health insurance pro-
grams on October 1, 2013
How does the new Health Insurance program affect you and your current insurance?
If you are 65 and on Medicare, the new Health Insurance program will not impact or change
your Medicare, Medigap, Part D or Medicare Advantage insurance in any way except to re-
duce your drug costs if you happen to hit the donut hole.
If you are under 65 or if you know someone that is under 65 and are uninsured the new
health insurance program will be of benefit to you or to those you know.
In Washington State residents will have a new way to find, compare and enroll in health insur-
ance. It’s called Washington Healthplanfinder, and it gives individuals, families, and small
business owners the confidence to choose the plan that best fits their needs and their budget.
Washington healthplanfinder will begin enrolling consumers on October 1, 2013, for
health coverage that begins on January 1, 2014. Open enrollment for this program will
continue until March 31, 2014.

Carol Hull has been volunteering at the Stilly Center for over
two years. She works mainly in the kitchen on Fridays, and loves
to cook. She fills in for Brenda when she isn't there. .She is also
President of the Advisory Council.
She was born in Mt. Vernon on Oct.10th. She had 6 siblings, and
she is the last surviving of them. She went to Juanita Grade
School, Kirkland Jr High, and Lake Washington HS. After gradu-
ation, Carol joined the Air Force. She was stationed in Texas, Illi-
nois, and Japan, and worked as a Med Tech. Carol left the ser-
vice to raise her family, and they lived in Japan. After that they moved to Edmonds.
Carol worked at a wholesale fabric company, and made her girls clothes out of curtain fabric.
She then worked with an Interior Designer for 3 years, then at a design studio for 2 years, and
then worked at Ken Schoenfelds Furniture as a drapery and interior designer. She was there 7
years. She also had her own design business for a while.
She married the love of her life, and they moved to Chesaw, WA. (by Okanogan) and built a
log cabin way up in the hills. One year they had 13 feet of snow!!!!
They lived there 15 years. While there she had a Gift and Floral Shop. When her husband be-
came ill, they moved to Camano Island. She worked at the Stanwood Merrill Gardens for 7
years as the Activity Director and quit to start her own Gardening and Housekeeing business.
Carol has 2 daughters, one son, and 5 grandchildren. She has lived for the past 3 years in a
"mother-in-law" apartment at her son and daughter-in-laws place.
She likes gardening, sewing, reading, cooking, and baking especially.
Carol spent a month in Italy on a Culinary walking tour, where for 1 week she went to different
homes, learning how to cook different Italian foods, and then got to eat the dinner they made.
She also went to Guatemala on a medical/dental mission tour--called "Hands of Love". Her
group made 1200 cotton bags with shoulder straps to give out. They worked in very poor con-
ditions, sleeping in tents, on sleeping pads, but were given clean sheets. She enjoyed the expe-
rience and would like to go on another Mission.
Carol just returned from the Senior Center 10 day trip to the Grand Canyon, and Las Vegas.

Volunteerism Do you want to add more meaning to your life, but are unsure of how to do so? Would you
like to forget about your troubles, if only temporarily, while you help someone else?
If you answer “yes” to these questions, becoming a volunteer may benefit you and your life.
Volunteering helps bolster self-esteem. When you help someone else, you feel better about
yourself. Volunteering is a great way to meet like-minded, helpful people. Making new friends
can become more difficult as you grow older. When you participate in activities you enjoy,
you meet people with whom you have something in common. Regardless of your age or
physical limitation, you can become a volunteer. Becoming involved is one of the most re-
warding ways to enrich your life. Get involved and become a volunteer at the
Stillaguamish Senior Center!!!!!
Volunteering is one way of giving back to your Senior Center. Volunteers are the heart of
the Center and we can always use more heart, so if you are interested in volunteering , contact
the Center (360) 653-4551 Ask for D. J.
and become a member of the volunteer team.
Thank you to all current volunteers!
You make it a great center for the community!

STILLAGUAMISH SENIOR CENTER
MEMBERSHIP 2013
For the first time in the history of the Stillaguamish Senior Center, we find it necessary to
implement a membership fee based on ability to pay, making sure we do not deter any senior
from taking advantage of our Senior Center.
We are beginning a new year and we hope the economy will improve for all of us. However,
in 2013, some of our funding will be reduced and we are ending 2012 with a loss.
Membership fees for 2013 will be $25.00 per person.
By paying this membership fee, you are investing and making a commitment to the Stil-
laguamish Senior Center. You can make this an even bigger investment by contributing a
membership fee for a low-income senior.
Your investment will enable us to continue providing these vital programs and services to our
senior citizens and to our community.
Membership forms will be available at the receptionist desk, program administration office
and business office.
Thank you for your continued support.
