All for Community

Passion for a cause translates into a personal commitment to make a community bet-ter. Passion drives action and change.

Philanthropy is a deeply held personal value that means different things to different people and manifests itself in Lambton county in our volunteer sector, our acts of kindness when informed of adversity or misfortune and our culture of ‘being gener-ous’.

Philanthropy is actually a verb. It is a word of action. It means the willingness to empa-thize and care about your community. It means being able to put yourself in someone else’s shoes and apply yourself to changing what you see with funds and action. Philan-thropy is a means to have your passion for a cause become a reality.

The Sarnia Community Foundation is a public foundation designed to build commu-nity funds that will be held in perpetuity. Donors to the Foundation have the option of deciding which charities should benefit from their donation or may leave the decision up to the Foundation. In all instances the funds are held for the good of the commu-nity and the capital carefully invested to ensure an enduring legacy.

As the local charity that gives to other charities, The Sarnia Community Foundation encourages you to reflect on your personal definition of philanthropy and to consider making a gift to the Foundation.

A charitable donation to the Foundation will benefit the communities of Sarnia Lamb-ton today and far into the future. We are in the position to help you turn your passion, your philanthropy, into a legacy for perpetuity.

Our Mission

To support the quality of life in our community , for ever.

Our Vision

To be the centre of our community’s philanthropy , returning more than $1 million each year to the community through grants and other charitable initiatives.

The Sarnia Community Foundation is unique within the local charitable community as its purpose is to ensure that gifts made to the foundation have an impact forever. The funds we raise and the grants we make remain in Sarnia Lambton for the people of Sarnia Lambton. It is the citizens of Sarnia Lambton we seek to serve and the citi-zens of Sarnia Lambton who create our funds and provide direction to our work. Since our inception, we have made an impact on over 100 local organizations and thousands of people in the community. We offer an expertise in building financial capital for the projects and programmes people care about, while continuing to build social capital -- the glue that holds communities together.

We’ve been in the business of building the community for more than 25 years.

Since 1983 we’ve been...

A Message From the 2010 Board Chair

It has been my pleasure to serve your Sarnia Community Foundation as its board chair during 2010. While it has been a very interesting period, it has not been without its chal-lenges. Only with the continuing active participation of our volunteer board and committee members supported by the tireless commitment of our Executive Director could we have accomplished so much with so little.

While your board has contributed much to the continued success of the Foundation, we have also continuously sought improvement in many ways. We engaged in an internal self-evaluation process and several special strategic planning ex-ercises as well as brainstorming sessions with the intent of finding new sources of revenue to support our operations and our community.

We paid close attention to the capital entrusted to us by all of our endowment fund holders by meeting with and closely monitoring our external investment management firm and continuing to operate the office with only part time staff. Since the original capital contributed to set up endowment funds is never spent, investment income derived from this capital is our only continual source of the funds and it is granted each year to deserving local charities. We know the need in our community is great and it is our aim to return as much as we can to the community on an annual basis. It is our hope that more families and businesses will provide us with a tax-saving charitable contribution to establish an endowment fund in their own name, not only as their perpetual legacy, but also as their special way to give back to this great Sarnia Lambton community which has given so much to them.

Although my term as board chair came to a close at the end of the calendar year, I plan to actively support this very worth-while organization for many years to come in its effort to improve the quality of life in our community. I would invite all residents of Sarnia Lambton to join me in that regard.

Donors in 2010More and more people are discovering the community foundation difference! Back in 1983 a group of fifty people were asked to become patrons of the new commu-nity foundation. They responded generously and their gifts still continue to give back to the community through the community fund. Their gift totalled approximately $30,000.

As the years have gone by, the Foundation has grown. Currently, the Foundation houses assets totalling nearly $2,000,000 and although the Foundation Endowment Funds are subject to the fluctuations of the market we have continued to give back and honor the commitment of the original founders. We are all for community.

In 2010 the following individuals, families and companies have taken the opportunity to help us fulfill our VISION. Their gifts to our funds have been put to work to im-prove the quality of life in Sarnia Lambton.

Community FundEstablished in 1983, this fund is comprised of donations large and small from many donors through the years. It is the pri-mary source of funds for the annual community grants.

The Community Fund helps meet ever-changing community needs – including future needs that often cannot be anticipated at the time a gift is made. Our local expertise helps us evaluate all aspects of community well-being. This fund is then used to make a difference where it is needed most.

Within the community fund a number of individuals and fami-lies have chosen to have a named fund. The income from these funds is directed towards community grants in accordance with the donor’s instructions.

Legacy GiftsThe Foundation is honoured to be the recipient of a growing number of planned legacy gifts. Gifts can be made through a bequest, through a life insurance policy, through naming the Foundation as the beneficiary of an RRIF or RRSP, through a charitable remainder trust or a number of other means.

Those who choose to tell us of their intentions become a part of a group called The Lambton Circle. They receive periodic updates on the work of the Foundation and have the opportu-nity be the first to hear of our initiatives and successes. They also become a very important sounding board for the founda-tion as it considers how best to serve our community.

Although you may think that a large gift is necessary to be a part of The Lambton Circle, some thoughtful planning is all it really takes. We’d be pleased to help you create a permanent legacy and have you join The Lambton Circle.

Please call the Executive Director 519-479 2082 to enquire how you can leave a gift for good… for community …for ever.

Honour Roll GiftsDuring the year the Foundation received a number of dona-tions honouring individuals, family members, families, achieve-ments and life events. These gifts were added to a fund selected by the donor. An honour roll gift can be made at any time and through a variety of means. The Foundation staff would be pleased to assist you in choosing an appropriate way to honour events of significance.

Community Grants Impact

The Foundation accepts grant applications once per cal-endar year. A Volunteer Grants committee reviews all ap-plications and makes recommendations to the Foundation Board for full or partial funding depending on fund avail-ability, the number of people served and the project.

Donors who have created advised or designated funds with the Foundation direct the income from their funds to local charities once per calendar year.

The Foundation made grants to 19 charitable organiza-tions or projects in Lambton County in 2010.

Even Small Donations Make a Difference

The Sarnia Community Foundation is a different kind of charity. We give to other charities based on what our do-nors tell us and through a carefully managed grants pro-gramme. The funds on these pages have been created by people just like you who envision a better future for their community. They have given a gift in perpetuity.

That means their gift will give forever. Because we are char-tered as a foundation and because the board is committed to the endowment concept for giving most of the gifts we are given are invested not spent.

Each year we take the income we are able to earn on all our funds and return that income to the community through grants. We don’t spend the original gift instead we reinvest it and the following year we are able to turn the money earned back to the community again. In fact we do that forever.

Every donation entrusted to us through our endowed funds is treated the same way, so whether the donation is small or large it will be used for good in your community forever. Over time even the smallest gift can make a difference.

Building communities that are good for life…. forever

In keeping with the company philosophy of creating com-munities that are good for life, the management of the S&R Group has chosen to establish a corporate fund at The Sarnia Community Foundation. The Steeves & Rozema Fund at the Foundation has been established as a means of ensuring that the community is cared for in a very tangible way through an annual grant made from the income the fund generates. Like all other funds at the foundation the capital will not be spent, only the income earned will be distributed to the community through a do-nor advised grants process.

The Steeves & Rozema Group creates communities that are good for life, developing, owning and managing retire-ment communities, long term care homes and commer-cial and multi-residential properties. Founded in 1963, the company has had a long history of success in the local community and has committed to building their fund as a means of establishing a further legacy. One of the found-ing partners in the company, Don Steeves, had the idea of leaving a legacy to the community beyond the bricks and mortar the company is known for and suggested establish-ing the fund at the foundation in late 2010 and the first grants from the fund will be made in the 2011 year.

A community that is good for life encompasses much more than bricks and mortar and the company is committed to being a part of their community in this very tangible way … forever.

Donald Steeves 1929 - 2011

The Board of the Sarnia Community Foundation notes with deep regret the passing of former board member and fund holder, Don Steeves. Don had a great passion for ensuring that things were built right, often manning the shovel himself to be sure that no detail would be over-looked. During his tenure with the Foundation he was in-strumental in setting the stage for its growth over the last few years, which is a testament to his belief in the value of a firm foundation and that if it could be built it had to be built well.

We are grateful for his care for the community with the establishment of the Donald Steeves Family Fund and lately for spearheading the Steeves & Rozema Corporate Fund.

Creating the Future

The Sarnia Community Foundation is a public foundation es-tablished by and for the people of Sarnia Lambton. Our mis-sion is to improve the quality of life in our community. We do that by;

working with donors to establish and maintain endowment •funds that will support registered charities and other eli-gible recipients

making grants to projects and programmes•

supporting leadership initiatives within the community. •

As an independent charitable organization, we are limited only by the will and imagination of our donors. We know that indi-viduals and organizations working together can create positive change in our community and we encourage projects which promote self-sufficiency and long term sustainability. We rec-ognize that innovation, creativity and an entrepreneurial spirit are key contributors to success and actively seek projects which have the potential for high impact, no matter how big or small they may be.

We invite you to get to know us better and to find out how you can get involved. We look forward to working with you!

A Message from the Executive Director

What is a community?

It’s a group of people connected by geography, by service to each other or by having a common cause or the same ideals.

Our founders knew that. They knew that supporting the deli-cate interplay between all aspects of life represented by the arts, culture, education, the environment, health, recreation and so-cial services would be what made their community great.

These citizens decided to create something that was unique among not for profit organizations in their community. They asked the Ontario government to make a law creating an or-ganization that would support their community for good and forever.

They created your Community Foundation.

Then they set up a process to ensure that people from all walks of life could be a part of their dream and they set up a means of continually giving back to the community through grants and other charitable initiatives.

2010 saw a year of continued growth at the Foundation as we now house assets totalling nearly $2,000,000 and have more than forty funds supporting all aspects of the community. Our ability to support our community has grown too and by the end of 2010, more than one and a half million dollars had been reinvested in the community through grants and short term projects with more than 125 organizations receiving SCF funds since we began granting in 1985. The direct benefits of those grants have touched thousands of people in the community.

Nearly all of the work has been done by volunteers. Our success is based on the power of people who care about their commu-nity and who give of their time, talents and treasures to make sure that the community they belong to can flourish.

Good communities don’t just happen; they develop when good people work together and make it happen. Our founders knew that, our volunteers know that and we hope that you’ll take the time to learn more about us and join us in what we do.

A New Fund to Care for the Land You LoveArea residents can now play a direct role in the long-term protection of naturally significant and environ-mentally sensitive properties in Sarnia-Lambton, by donating to a new legacy fund created by the Sarnia Community Foundation in partnership with Lambton Wildlife Inc.

Funds generated by the Community Foundation’s new Lambton Wildlife Legacy Fund will be used by the local naturalists club to maintain existing and future lands under its stewardship. The fund is being estab-lished in conjunction with the Ontario Land Trust Alliance and the Community Foundations of Canada with funding from the Ontario Trillium Foundation.

“With the creation of the Lambton Wildlife Legacy Fund, local residents now have a direct and very per-sonal opportunity to ensure that their community’s natural heritage remains protected for future genera-tions to enjoy,” said Community Foundation Chair Les McDermott. “What better legacy to leave than one that clearly demonstrates a respect for our envi-ronment?”

Lambton Wildlife President Richard Maxfield said the club was excited to have the Community Foundation’s active support for its long-standing efforts to preserve important natural environments and to help all citizens learn about and experience their natural surroundings. Lambton Wildlife currently cares for approximately 104 hectares (257 ac.), with an interest in adding other naturally significant areas in the future.

“Donations to the Community Foundation fund will further strengthen our efforts to protect important natural landscapes, including rare plants and wildlife, making sure that they continue to perform their envi-ronmental roles and can be appreciated by our com-munity for many years to come,” said Maxfield.

More information on this fund is available by calling the Foundation office.
