“LEARNING TO PLAY THE UKULELE”

By Ethan Chang

Last week, the Outrigger Waikiki on the Beach (OWK) welcomed Brandon Seastrand and his family to Hawai‘i. While here, they enjoyed a luau, visited the Polynesian Cultural Center and the USS Arizona Memorial and experienced our Hawaiian culture through OWK’s on-property activities like our hula lessons, Kukui nut bracelet making, lei making and of course, ‘ukulele lessons.

Last November, Brian was the winner of a trip to Hawai’i, thanks to the T.V. show Wheel of Fortune and his skill at playing the game. His prize-winning puzzle? - “LEARNING TO PLAY THE UKULELE!”

True to his word to Pat Sajak, that is exactly what Brian did while here. He even bought an ‘ukulele to continue learning how to play and promised to rave about Hawai‘i and Outrigger’s hospitality to family and friends.

Congratulations, Brian! We look forward to welcoming you back.

Aloha and Mahalo, Jo!By Kathy Oyadomari

On April 15, employees of the Holiday Inn® Waikiki Beachcomber (OBC) gathered to bid aloha to Josefina (Jo) Ader who retired after 30 years of dedicated service. Ruthann Yamanaka, Chuck Shishido, Charlene Goo and Simeon Miranda expressed their appreciation on behalf of Outrigger Hotels and Resorts for her contribution to the company and gifts of aloha and recognition were also presented.

Jo and her husband Leopoldo have been married for 44 years and they have 2 sons, 1 daughter and 9 grandchildren (her joy)! Jo is looking forward to residing part-time in Honolulu and part-time in the Philippines. In the Philippines, she will keep busy running a “mom & pop” convenience store called “Ulu Sari Sari” with her niece. When in Honolulu, Jo will keep in shape through daily walks and will relax while watching Korean dramas. In 2015, Jo is planning to travel to Europe with Virgi Asakawa, OBC executive housekeeper.

Jo thanked her co-workers and Virgie for their friendship and support. She shared that she enjoyed working at OBC and will miss everyone who worked so well as a team.

Virgi shared, “I worked with Jo for 8 years. She is quiet, yet easy to talk to and a good listener. Jo is very good at coaching and mentoring the housekeeping employees to do the right thing. I wish Jo a happy retirement!”

We are proud of you, Jo, for your many years of dedication and service and wish you all the best in your retirement. Mahalo and a hui hou!

Outrigger Proudly Supports Outstanding High School Students

By Dr. Chuck Kelley

Last week, 41 exceptional students from around the State gathered at the Pacific Beach Hotel to receive scholarships and recognition by the Department of Education, Hawai‘i Lodging & Tourism Association and the Honolulu Star Advertiser at the 10th Annual Citizenship Awards.

Jean Rolles and I were on hand to personally congratulate all the winners and especially Katelyn Saiki from Pearl City High School who received a $1000 scholarship from Outrigger Enterprises Group.

Katelyn was chosen from among her peers as she best exemplified model citizenship in her community work, outstanding academics, positive attitude and her desire to pursue post-secondary education. After graduation, she will be attending the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa majoring in science with the goal of becoming a physician.

Although only in their teens, these impressive young adults have already proven that they have the determination and ethics to succeed in life and make a positive contribution to our community. Outrigger is proud to financially support this program and all the winners from throughout Hawai‘i.

Outrigger Wins at the 3rd Annual Hapalua, Hawaii’s Half-Marathon!

By Glaiza deGracia and Kathy Hansberry

On Sunday, April 13, the 2014 Hapalua, Hawaii’s Half-Marathon kicked off its third year with over 4,600 participants at the start line. Runners and walkers gathered at 6 a.m. at the Duke Kahanamoku statue on Kalākaua Avenue for the 13.1-mile run that took participants from Waikīkī into downtown Honolulu, then back into Waikīkī for a grueling climb up Monsarrat Avenue and around Diamond Head, with the finish line at Kapi‘olani Park. Finishers were greeted with live music, a finishers’ Hapalua gold medal, fresh malasadas, shave ice and plenty of water to rehydrate.

As a long-standing sponsor for local sporting events, Outrigger Hotels and Resorts signed on as the official hotel sponsor for the Hapalua this year. Outrigger hosted an onsite Outrigger hospitality tent where runners and spectators were able to enjoy various activities, including mini massages by Ka Moku ‘Ōla Oiwi and Hoopdance Fitness with the Twirling Girls. And of course, there was always a line at the “Spin the Outrigger Wheel” game to win some great Outrigger logo merchandise. We also held a drawing for a free, two-night stay in Waikīkī! A unique aspect of the Hapalua is the event’s partnership with the online fundraising site Crowdrise, which allows participants to set up teams to run for an official charity. #teamOutrigger’s charity was the Visitor Industry Charity Walk and we’re happy to report that we were able to contribute significantly to Hawai‘i’s charities.

To encourage travelers to visit our islands and join in on the competition, we offered participants and spectators special rates starting at just $105 per night at participating Outrigger and OHANA hotels in Waikiki.

Outrigger was also well represented at The Hapalua Expo held on Friday and Saturday. Runners who made their way to the Outrigger table at the Hawai‘i Convention Center got a sneak peak of the fun waiting for them at the Outrigger hospitality tent on race day.

Mahalo to the following Outrigger ‘ohana who made the 2014 Hapalua a huge success: Jen Cabasag, Ed Case, Kathy Foley, Charlene Goo, Milton Lafitaga, Mindy Mabuchi, Charles Naura, Mili Rock and Jo-Ann Yonamine; and to the over 40 runners/walkers who ran on behalf of #teamOutrigger.

Lastly, congratulations to the overall 2014 Hapalua winner Eri MacDonald from O‘ahu who crossed the finish line with an impressive time of 1:25:21 and took home first place and prize money. For complete race results, visit http://thehapalua.com.

Don’t miss out on the next exciting Outrigger-sponsored event, the annual Waikiki SPAM® Jam scheduled for Saturday, May 3, on Kalākaua Avenue in Waikīkī. Hope to see you there!

New Sun Smart Buggies Outshine Electric Counterparts

By Niel Mason

The team at Noosa’s greenest 5-star resort, Outrigger Little Hastings Street Resort and Spa (ANR), is pleased to add even more strings to our “eco” bow, with the arrival of solar-powered electric buggies.

The six-seater solar buggies have replaced our existing electric buggies offering guests an even greener ride between the resort and Hastings Street.

Economical to run and maintain, the solar buggies use an innovative “active charging process” harnessing the sun’s rays to deliver an increased travelling range, while using less mains power, and leading to increased battery life by preventing sulphur build-up in their high-tech “Trojan” batteries.

In addition, the buggies feature “regenerative braking” technology to reduce the overall energy required to power the vehicles. This technology captures energy generally

lost in the braking process in conventional electric vehicles and recycles it back into the battery cells to re-charge them.

The end result is that the buggies don’t require electrical charging as often or for as long as a conventional buggy – which is a “win win” for the environment – and another step forward in co-existing with our natural surroundings.

A study conducted by Singapore Polytechnic found that a buggy with 420 watts of solar panels installed can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 280 kilograms per year; we are proud to be contributing to a greener environment by reducing energy use recycling solar power.

The solar buggies feature the latest technology in their field and we’ll continue to identify and introduce new and sustainable practices throughout ANR above and beyond the requirements of our formal Green Star Rating. We’ve also introduced a number of other energy saving measures to support our sustainable building and landscaping design, which includes extensive water harvesting systems and mixed use of gas and solar power throughout the resort.

In addition, we recently replaced our oil-based plastic take-away and room service packaging with recycled plant based utensils and containers, and are now reviewing the LED lighting throughout the common property areas for further energy savings.

In August 2013, ANR was the first resort in Queensland to introduce California-made Pedego electric cruiser bikes, which have become popular transport alternatives for guests whilst reducing their reliance on motor vehicle use during their stays.

Our location in the heart of the Noosa Biosphere and beside Noosa National Park is not taken for granted; we are constantly striving to introduce new technologies to lessen our impact on the environment.

Castaway Island, Fiji

“Aloha Dr. Kelley,. . . My son Subash and I just returned from the most amazing trip to Fiji. Chuck [Kelley] helped to connect me with Steven Andrews at Castaway Island. From the moment we landed on the beach till the time we departed, we had the most magical time. I can’t say enough about your staff and their warm hospitality. Lingo [Reece], Daniel Roy, Iva Qounadovu in the kids program, [Seremaia] Jerry Korovatu in ocean activities

and many, many others made sure we were always well taken care of. In all my travels, I have never experienced such authentic hospitality. We were greeted with hugs and music when we arrived that was so special and a moment I will never forget. Subash was sobbing when we left and made me promise we will come back soon, and hopefully we will do that. Thanks again for the note. We look forward to catching up with you soon.”

RSC Participates in Earth Ocean FestivalBy Carol Hanna

The Outrigger Royal Sea Cliff (RSC) participated in the Earth Ocean Festival at the Makaeo Pavilion, Old Kona Airport Park, in Kailua-Kona on April 12, 2014. RSC was one of nine local sponsors of the event.

The day was packed with walking tours of the Natural Energy Lab, the Kona Cloud Forest Sanctuary, the Royal Footsteps along the Kona Coast; along with entertainment on the main stage in the pavilion from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The headline entertainer was Weldon Kekauoha.

Gary, Kani, John and I were there to promote what RSC does for sustainability. Pictures of the 897 PV panels on the roof were prominently displayed, along with samples of the LED lighting used throughout the property. Many attendees were curious about the Hana Hou Recycling company we use to help us recycle mixed recycle, glass, aluminum, cardboard, plastic and paper. We also handed out flyers offering kama‘āina rates to visiting families. All in all, it was a very successful day for the Royal Sea Cliff!

Easter Cheer Courtesy of OutriggerBy Nancy Daniels

SGT Ismael Torres, CMS Frank M. Leota, Mildred Courtney, SGT Brian Vierling) and a van chock full of Easter cheer

This year’s Easter will be a little brighter for some young Army families and the Wounded Warrior detachment at Schofield Barracks thanks to the kindness of the Outrigger Hotels and Resorts ‘ohana and other generous patrons. With Outrigger Military Liaison Mildred Courtney spearheading the project, the Outrigger ‘ohana assembled 50 Easter baskets to share with some very deserving Soldiers and their families this year, while 35 cases of Girl Scout cookies were donated to the Schofield Wounded Warrior program. On Wednesday, Command Sergeant Major Frank M. Leota of the U.S. Army, Pacific, stopped by the OHANA Waikiki East to personally thank Mrs. Courtney and Outrigger and to collect the baskets and cookies for a special Easter delivery.

In a follow-up email, CMS Leota expressed his appreciation to Outrigger as follows, “We are delivering the baskets as I am sending this [email to you]. We cannot thank you and Mildred enough for the wonderful support that we have received from your team to our Soldiers and their families.”

I think each and every member of the Outrigger ‘ohana will agree with me when I say it is an honor and a privilege to support the men and women of our Armed Forces. Happy Easter to all.

Congratulations and great job, Victor!

Even though rates were up, it was not a factor in their loyalty and trust in Natalie and the property. In addition, Natalie wrote welcome letters and delivered s p e c i a l V I P a m e n i t y bags to all participating professionals. The changes have been well received by the entire front desk staff. Johnny has made a “green” suggestion that all reports be downloaded onto a thumb drive to assist in cutting down on paper waste. On one of his daily building checks, he found brackets for the air conditioning cooling tower plumbing badly rusted and in need of replacement. Calvin created a list of supplies needed and meticulously completed the repair. His caring attitude for his place, is truly exemplified in our values of Kīnā‘ole (flawlessness) and Wahi (place). Mahalo, Calvin, for a job well done.

Building Maintenance III

Matt currently works at the Outrigger Kiahuna Plantation with a positive attitude and a friendly personality. A hard worker, when Matt is told to do something, he will get the job done the proper way. He works well under pressure and maintains his composure when there are multiple work orders. In March, there were two grill fires that resulted in damage to the wiring and control knobs. Matt was assigned to replace a burnt valve at a grill station where he noticed a screw plug was loose on the damaged valve. The screw plug was allowing gas to leak into the front panel area of the grill, which eventually ignited from the gas build up causing the fire that damaged the wiring. Matt was asked to inspect the other grills for the same issue. Matt generated a logbook to track grill failures, which consisted of dates and corrective actions. It is Matt’s attention to tiny details and his resulting actions that make him a valuable employee in the department and to the property. Mahalo, Matt!

TPP “Public” Spirit By Udom Raheem

The Outrigger Phi Phi Island Resort and Spa (TPP) enjoys Sports Day once a year where four teams, each sporting a different color – pink, green, yellow and violet, show their team spirit! The event kicks off with a parade, followed by an opening ceremony hosted by Khun Chao Treenawongse, general manager. The “competition” was cleaning up Loh Lana Bay, a public beach about 1.5 km away from the Outrigger Phi Phi Island Resort and Spa. A lot of rubbish had been noticed along the beach, so we arranged a major cleanup to kick-start what we hope will be an ongoing project.

Provided with garbage bags, the colorful teams collected over 50 bags of rubbish, including broken bottles, fishing rope, foam boxes and plastic waste. We were able to thoroughly clean up the beach collecting more rubbish than anticipated. It was disappointing to see so much rubbish carelessly left along the beach, as Loh Lana Beach is used by our entire island community.

TPP calls this project “Public Spirit” because Loh Lana is a public beach with no one in charge of keeping it clean. Every Sunday, a team from our resort will clean up the beach in the spirit of community responsibility.

Team Violet Team Pink Teamwork!

Guests gather for a highly memorable evening

A spectacular fireworks display

Outrigger Mauritius Resort and Spa ... << From 1

A mix of Mauritian, Hawaiian ... ... and international sensations

multi-ethnic island nation – and discussing Ke ‘Ano Wa‘a, The Outrigger Way or Ensame (as we call it in the Mauritian context) with the newest members of the Outrigger ‘ohana (family). I am very impressed at how The Outrigger Way is being translated into Mauritian culture.

One of the many highlights of the evening was Kaipo’s Hawaiian oli (chant) and blessing given to show our gratitude to our hosts for the inclusion of Mauritius in our ‘ohana. Together with Bitsy, he presented General Manager Frédéric Chrétien with a koa paddle, symbolizing the partnership between ocean islands, strength, unity of purpose and the start of a journey together.

I presented Minister Sik Yuen with a beautiful koa box from Hawai‘i. Addressing the guests, the Minister said that he is “very proud to see Outrigger Mauritius Resort and Spa joining the league of the best hotels in Mauritius. There is no doubt that Outrigger will bring a new dimension to the tourism industry here.” He noted that Mauritius is a multi-award-winning destination, especially in the honeymoon and romance sectors of the industry. “We hope to see Outrigger Mauritius winning many new awards in the near future,” he said.

Dr. Chuck welcomed the guests and gave a brief overview of Outrigger’s history, beginning with the arrival of his grandparents, Roy and Estelle, in Hawai‘i in 1929. Now in 2014, he said, “The third generation has expanded the business … and today, everywhere we go, we supply genuine, authentic hospitality with a local cultural experience.”

The evening, unlike anything seen before in Mauritius, was characterized by a chic mix of Mauritian, Hawaiian and international sensations with Kelley family members as well as Darren Edmonstone from our Asia Pacific corporate office playing a key role in the celebrations. The party on the resort’s spectacular beachfront featured acrobats, dancers, live music, mimes, a sumptuous variety of cuisines, a spectacular fireworks display over the sea, and guests happily dancing barefoot on the beach. There were more than a few “chicken skin” (goose bumps) moments.

The emotional connections between Mauritius and Hawai‘i are very evident. Kaipo’s chants, our family presence and ‘Ensame’ all bode well for our bold new journey in the Indian Ocean. Mahalo, merci and thank you to the many hands that created and took part in this spectacular event. We are excited to be in Mauritius and know we can bring our own special brand of hospitality where the culture, the employees and the place are celebrated and valued as one. All this translates into a special experience for our guests.

The Outrigger Mauritius Resort and Spa is the first for us in the Indian Ocean and our 46th property now open or under development in eight countries.
