The Bi-Monthly Newsletter of St. George Greek Orthodox Church DOES GOD EXIST? Father Andrew Eugenis I pray you all had a restful, enjoyable and relaxing summer. As we all gear up to get the kids ready for school and begin the Ecclesiastical New Year this month, I look back at the past year and realize that we as Christians are being challenged more so than ever before about the very existence of God in the world today. I have been asked more than ever, “Why does God allow so much suffering in the world”. I recently came across a short story that sums up my observation on suffering in the world and why we are where we are as a society as a whole and what God has to do with it. A man went to a barber shop to have his hair cut and his beard trimmed. As the barber began to work, they began to have a good conversation. They talked about so many things and various subjects. When they eventually touched on the subject of God, the barber said: “I don't believe that God exists.” “'Why do you say that?” asked the customer. “Well, you just have to go out in the street to realize that God doesn't exist. Tell me, if God exists, would there be so many sick people? Would there be abandoned children? If God existed, there would be neither suffering nor pain. I can't imagine a loving God who would allow all of these things.” The customer thought for a moment, but didn't respond because he didn't want to start an argument. The barber finished his job and the customer left the shop. As he left the barbershop, he saw a man in the street with long, stringy, hair and an untrimmed beard. He looked dirty and unkempt. The customer turned back and entered the barber shop again and he said to the barber: “You know what? Barbers do not exist.” 'How can you say that?' asked the surprised barber. 'I am here, and I am a barber. And I just worked on you! “No!” the customer exclaimed. “Barbers don't exist, because if they did, there would be no people with dirty long hair and untrimmed beards, like that man outside.” “Ah, but barbers DO exist! That's what happens when people do not come to me.” “Exactly!” affirmed the customer. 'That's the point! God, too, DOES exist! That's what happens when people do not go to Him and don't look to Him for help. That's why there's so much pain and suffering in the world.' Let us begin this New Year focusing on our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ by allowing him to be part of our lives and being an important part of His ministries of St. George sharing our time and talents and treasures with Him knowing He is always by our side. A Message from our Parish Council President

I’d like to share with you items discussed at our most recent Parish Council meeting to keep you informed of a number of recent developments affecting our community. Our second annual Jersey Shore Greek Festival was a social and financial success! Attendance was up, as was the participation of the members of our community - both as volunteers and contributors. The “Kefi” surrounding the festival was amazing, with positive comments and compliments coming from the many people who attended from other churches and the Greater Ocean Township area. While the final numbers have yet to be calculated, the car raffle was a huge success, and the overall revenues and profits will exceed those of last year. The Council would like to express its sincere thanks and appreciation to the chairs of each committee and the many, many volunteers whose dedication and hard work made our festival a successful and enjoyable event for all. With regard to our physical complex, we have recently installed a bell system for the church. It is a state of the art system that has incredible sound and will be a welcoming beacon for our parishioners and our neighbors. Its chimes will be a warm signal of our Church’s presence in the area and a sign of the glory of Jesus Christ. The Council is still working to sell our original home in Asbury Park. It is currently being rented by another church, whose elders have expressed a desire to purchase the property. The Council is in frequent contact with the elders and is seeking a price that fairly reflects the value of the church and adjoining classrooms and gym. While the talks continue, we are collecting a rent that contributes to the general operating fund of our current complex. In addition, we are renegotiating our lease agreement with Buona Sera. It has been a successful partnership for both parties, and helps offset the operating costs of our facilities. Gym rentals continue to be strong, also contributing to our financial well-being. The Council also discussed the current status of our Stewardship program. To date, we are running behind last year’s total, with fewer families making stewardship pledges. In addition, the average pledge has declined. This is a challenge for us all. Financially, stewardship is a critical component of funding our beautiful complex and the operations of the church and its ministries. Spiritually, a strong stewardship program strengthens our community by bringing more families to our church. There are some who enjoy our church and haven’t yet become stewards. Building a strong community is an obligation for all of us. I ask you to help the Stewardship Committee and the Council in growing and strengthening our church by encouraging families and

friends to commit their time and treasure to St. George by becoming stewards and becoming active in our ministries and church. We’ve built a beautiful church and community complex, we need everyone’s help – financially and time – to keep it that way and to continue to provide services to our parishioners and neighbors. Although it’s some months away, the Parish Council is preparing for the General Assembly meeting to be held on Sunday, November 2, 2014. At the meeting, the Council will present the proposed budget for 2015, and a five year financial plan for the church, its ministries and community programs. This will be an important meeting as we are entering a new phase for our community as we transition from a “start-up” to a more mature operation as a church and a community facility. On behalf of the Parish Council, I want to thank all our parishioners for being part of the Saint George spiritual and social community. We look forward to working with you to make our community a stronger, more vibrant vehicle for spiritual and social fulfillment, and a community we can all be proud of. In His Service, Spiro Pappas

A NOTE FROM OUR PARISH COUNCIL...

We were so happy with attendance at St. George all summer! As you are all aware, it is the duty of our Parish Council to help maintain respect and reverence during Holy Communion. As a reminder, we ask that EVERYONE please follow the order set by Father Andrew and the Parish Council for dismissal of Holy Communion:

-Dismissal is always from the center aisle.

-Father Andrew announces weekly that you please remain STANDING at your seats until directed by the ushers.

-Communion will begin from the back of the church ONLY with the newly baptized, members of the choir, Sunday school teachers, and infants from the crying room. All others parishioners at the back of the church will have to wait until the end. Therefore, we urge you to come early and to be seated in a pew.

-Communion will then continue ROW BY ROW, beginning with the front row. The Parish Council will remove the center aisle ribbon to allow all other remaining parishioners (including Sunday school students) to receive Holy Communion. If your Sunday school child is not receiving Communion, they should still exit with the others, then continue down the aisle around to the Antidoron (Blessed Bread) and proceed to their classroom.

-Those at the stasidia (standing seats) are dismissed as if in the last row.

Please familiarize yourself with this Dismissal as the Parish Council cannot answer any questions during Holy Communion. THERE SHOULD BE NO TALKING BY ANYONE DURING HOLY COMMUNION.

St. George Church ~ Spirit of Stewardship “Chosen and Appointed by God to Go and Bear Fruit”

“By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit...” (John 15:8)

“If you build it, He will come.” (Field of Dreams, Universal Pictures, 1989). We did build it, and Our Lord Jesus Christ is indeed here with us in our own ‘field of dreams’ right here in Ocean Township, waiting for us to ‘Go and Bear Fruit.’ So, exactly how do we do that? How do we bear fruit worthy of a harvest that we can present to Our Lord? We bear this fruit through our good deeds, by actively participating in Divine Liturgy every Sunday, by preparing for and receiving the Holy Gift of Communion, by acts of kindness, by bringing our friends and neighbors to Church, by sharing in our ministries, by extending a helping hand to those in need… The list is endless. Are you bearing fruit? So, what do we have in store for you at St. George in the new ecclesiastical year? It’s time to join us in our growing ministries. Philoptochos Society, AGAPE Ministries, GOYA, HOPE, JOY, Choir, Socialites, Kali Parea, Soup Kitchen, Acolytes, Sunday School, Greek School, Adult Religious Education, AHEPA Family: this is only a partial list of ministries available to our stewards. In September, we prepare for the annual Metropolis of NJ Holy Cross Day Celebration at the Paramount Theatre in Asbury Park on September 21st. Our choir members will sing with the Eastern Federation of Greek Orthodox Church Musicians at the annual conference at Kimisis tis Theotokou, Holmdel, October 2nd - 5th. On October 18th the Philoptochos Society has their Annual Luncheon at Eagle Oaks Country Club in Farmingdale. Our GOYA is excited about the annual Mr. & Miss Jr. GOYA Pageant. New members are always welcome in all our ministries! These are just a few of our upcoming events. Become an active member of our growing family of St. George right here in our own ‘field of dreams.’ Give the Gift of Stewardship, and Reap its Rewards. Witness the Spirit of Stewardship in our beloved St. George Church. Become a part of our growing community. We cannot do this without YOU!

CATCH THE WAVE! Ladies Philoptochos Society

Page 6 THE BEACON September/October 2014, Volume 14/Issue 5

“Our Mission is to promote charitable, benevolent and philanthropic outreach, to preserve the sanctity of life and family, and to perpetuate and promote our Orthodox faith and traditions." This is an exciting time for St. George Philoptochos and we want you to be a part of it! Our community has been graced with this beautiful new complex. Father Andrew has been leading the way to get our beloved faith known to the greater community. This is the perfect time for Philoptochos to shine brightly. To make known all the good work that is done, as well as start new ministries. When I volunteered to write this article, I started thinking about what motivates people to join a group. I came up with: the work being done, the time commitment, the rewards and fun. First the time commitment: I have a confession, I am asking you to do something that I did not do myself because I was misinformed. As a young, working mother I did not think I had time to join Philoptochos. I thought it was an organization for older women. I thought I would be asked to run Fashion Shows and bake for hours. I thought I could not commit. But I was wrong. Philoptochos is an organization for all women regardless of age, interests and chapter of life. The purpose of this article is to get the word out. Whatever time and talent you can commit – we welcome you with open arms. You will not be pressured to overextend yourself. You can tailor your involvement to fit your current lifestyle. Do you have an hour or two a month to spare? No problem. Perhaps you can do a visitation to a shut in. If you like to knit or crochet making

prayer shawls to distribute to the sick and at nursing homes could be your niche. Technology savvy women are in high demand. Webpage development, power point presentations, social media (face book, twitter, instagram, etc) all can be done from home. The possibilities are boundless because the needs of worthy charitable endeavors are endless. Whatever charitable work you have a passion for can be done through Philoptochos. You will have the support system of some of the hardest working women I know. Jesus taught us that good works are required of us along with faith for our salvation. St. John of Kronstadt (20th cent.) tells us “Love for God begins to manifest itself, and to act in us, when we begin to love our neighbor as ourselves, and not to spare ourselves or anything belonging to us for him, as he is the image of God: "For he who does not love his brother, whom he has seen, cannot love God, whom he has not seen." Doing good works is not only altruistic it is good for our souls. As woman, friendships can enrich our lives tremendously. Joining Philoptochos is an opportunity to create some of the richest friendships that last a lifetime. You will be joining an army of women whose dedication to the community as well as each other cannot be matched. Philoptochos is the largest woman’s philanthropic organization in America. I attended the National Philoptochos Biennial Convention in Philadelphia this July and was humbled to be part of an organization that accomplished so much. In conclusion it is my sincere hope that if you are not a member of Philoptochos you will consider joining. September 18th at 6:30 is our next general membership meeting. Future plans include fun game and movie nights, which gives you an opportunity to get to know us. Come, meet us and then decide.

‘I was hungry and you fed me, I was thirsty and you gave me drink,

I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.’

Matthew 25:31-46 Dear Fellow Parishioners: The Philoptochos Society of St. George Greek Orthodox Church is about to hold its Annual Luncheon, the organizations largest fundraiser that supports its philanthropic Mission. St. Barbara’s Church in Toms River who is driving around in a brand new 2014 Lexus! Below are reprinted articles from various website reporters that visited our Festival. A GREAT BIG THANK YOU to ALL our parishioners who gave of their time, talent and treasures to bring the Festival to life. It takes an entire COMMUNITY – working together with Christ as the Center – to make any event a success. OPA!

2ND ANNUAL JERSEY SHORE GREEK FESTIVAL A SUCCESS Our second annual Jersey Shore Greek Festival which took place over the course of three days on June 27, 28, 29 was a resounding success with all! A total of over 7,500 people attended and the total gross profits for the festival were over $160,000! In addition, our first ever car raffle raised over $23,000! Congrats to Irene Kouzoulis of

Ed Murray, The Star-Ledger OCEAN TOWNSHIP —The 2nd annual Jersey Shore Greek Festival was planned long ago but today a big screen TV was added — rolled in for the World Cup match of Greece vs Croatia. The flags were already on hand and few extra painted faces just added to the festivities. St. George Greek Orthodox Church moved from Asbury Park to their new and much larger church more than two years ago. The church complex was designed like a Greek Village, with the church at the center. Tours of the church were offered throughout the day. “We outgrew the church in Asbury Park and we wanted to stay local,” said Father Andrew Eugenis. “The festival is an outreach of our faith,” added Eugenis and a portion of the proceeds are donated to Monmouth County-area charitable organizations. All the food is homemade and church members bring it to the festival or made on sight. The festival drew 7,000 last year and Theo Ritorto said they passed that total early today. “I do it for the love of the church and to share it with others, “ Ritorto said of working on the festival.

GREEK FESTIVAL A COMMUNITY EVENT By: Jack Kearns Published: June 30, 2014

OCEAN: The joy of a warm summer day was matched by the welcoming warmth of the Jersey Shore Greek Festival at St. George Greek Orthodox Church on West Park Avenue over the three days of last weekend, June 27 to 29. It was the second year for the festival since the church moved from Asbury Park as the need for a larger church and buildings evolved over the years. The festival celebrates the orthodoxy of the Greek community and the spiritual bonds that bring traditions and religions together. “The two are inseparable,” said the church’s pastor Father Andrew Eugenis. “The members of the community are more joined in all facets of life." The 86-year-old parish is comprised of approximately 400 families. The parish has an educational center where the history and culture is taught to the young, as well as Sunday Catechism, the religious ties. The cultural center is used for plays, banquets, and social events, said Co-Chair Theo Ritorto. “We also have a collegiate gymnasium for athletic pursuits,” she said. The church and the center are looking to the future. “The next 100 years,” Fr. Eugenis said. “The parish members cover almost 4 generations of families.” He added the church welcomes the community, all groups and religious assemblies as St. George become a part of the Ocean and surrounding communities. The festival featured the goods and services of merchants from local and distant towns. Traditional names and terms on booths and food counters helped display the traditional words that capture the Hellenism of the parish, the Greek language bolstered by English translations next to them. Fr. Eugenis told of the parish’s "little miracle” the orthodoxy in the painting form that graces the wall in the Chapel, a smaller room of the church used during the week when fewer of the congregation will be resent. The canvas that contains the image of the Virgin Mary and Jesus was coming loose form the wall in the Asbury Park location just as the parish was about to move."They wanted to go with us to this new location," Fr. Eugenis smiled. Co-Chair Ritorto said that a good part of the funds raised will go to local 501© (3) organizations and others. The list includes The Frances Foundation for fighting children’s cancer; Monmouth Medical Center to expand its pet therapy programs; the Ocean Township Historical Museum to preserve the history; the National Multiple Sclerosis Society Oakhurst Chapter and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes for camp scholarships and leadership camps. The raffle of a new Lexus may help the causes.

After a relaxing summer, GOYA is ready to start having fun and fellowship. If you have a child entering the 7th grade this fall then we have the perfect youth group to join. You are invited to begin the year with our annual Kickoff party at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Scheidt, on September 6th, starting at 6pm. You will be able to meet the coaches, youth advisors and other GOYANs and their families. All youth entering 7th grade are welcomed along with their families! For more information please contact an advisor or the church office. Our first GOYA meeting will be held on Sunday, September 7th, following church services in the AHEPA room of the Education building, where you can meet the new executive board and be filled in on the activities that we will be participating in the next couple of months. Tentatively, we will be starting up basketball practices on Mondays, volleyball practices on Tuesdays and Greek dance on Wednesdays, times to be announced. We will also start our Friday Youth Night, which is on the first and third Friday of each month. Goyans are encouraged to attend to make friends through different activities. On September 21st, we will participate in the Holy Cross Celebration in Asbury Park where 4 GOYA divers representing our church will brave the cold waters to obtain the honor of retrieving the blessed cross. Good luck to our divers; Joan Scheidt and George Papageorge in the junior division and Alison Lemire and Stavros Xanthacos in the senior division. We will have our fall lock-in retreat on October 10 where parents and goyans will gather to learn about our faith while having fun with each other. October 12th will bring the Mr. and Miss GOYA pageant at the Pines Manor in Edison. This year we have Stavros Xanthacos and Alexandra Natsis representing us. Everyone wishes them luck and great success. We look forward to making new friends and reconnecting with the old ones. If anyone has questions they may contact one of the advisors; George Moutis, George Costidis, Maria Conery and Konnie Keastead, or Father Andrew. Please visit the church website at: http://www.stgeorgeap.org/ministries/goya/home/ to learn more about GOYA and use: http://www.stgeorgeap.org/ministries/goya/forms/ to sign up your child. See you all soon!

Please submit your registration form to St. George Greek Orthodox Church, 1033 W. Park Avenue, Ocean NJ 07712 to enroll your child in the upcoming school year. Please note that you must be a member in good standing of St. George Greek Orthodox Church in Ocean NJ to enroll. The first day of Greek School this year is September 10, 2014. As we begin the 2014-2015 academic year, I would like to take this opportunity to introduce the Hellenic Book Club. Parents will have an opportunity to purchase Greek books from a catalog published four times a year. This program is similar to the Scholastic Book Club and 20% of the proceeds from the sale of these books will go back to the Greek School Program. Catalogs will be made available to the students thru their classrooms. We also welcome the St. George community to make purchases. Catalogs will be available on the bulletin board near the church’s main office. Our first PTO meeting will take place on September 17, 2014 from 5:30pm-6:30pm. I encourage all parents and teachers to attend this meeting, so that we can discuss some of the exciting events we would like to plan, and get your feedback as well as your thoughts and ideas for the upcoming year. The Calendar of Events for this year is included below. We could add more activities to the calendar once we meet and discuss. If you have any questions or suggestions, feel free to reach out to me at [email protected] or the other board members. We look forward to working with you this year. Georgia Kyrifides
