A Message fromAttorney General Kwame RaoulWe can all probably agree that 2020 has been a year unlike any other. This year, my office has undertaken new and expanded efforts to protect Illinois consumers during the pandemic. From helping people identify and avoid scams – such as those related to alleged COVID-19 cures or treatments, or identity theft connected to unemployment insurance benefit scams – to addressing price gouging, the hardworking staff of the Attorney General’s office continues to provide information, services and resources to protect consumers during the pandemic. Although the 2020 holiday season will be different than in years past, I am again releasing my office’s annual Safe Shopping Guide to help anyone shopping for children avoid purchasing dangerous or recalled children’s products.

This year, the annual Safe Shopping Guide highlights 34 recalls issued by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission during 2020. Descriptions of the toys, furniture, children’s clothing and other children’s products are accompanied by photographs to make hazardous products easier to identify.

I am urging families to be aware of recalled toys with parts that can break off and become choking hazards, toys containing magnets that can be extremely dangerous if swallowed, and rocking seats and inclined infant sleepers that pose suffocation hazards. The guide also includes children’s clothing that does not meet flammability standards, poses strangulation hazards or contains levels of lead. Additionally, the guide highlights strollers that put children at risk of falling and children’s furniture that if not properly secured, can result in falls, entrapment or other injuries.

Even though recalled products should not be sold, families should ensure they do not have these recalled items in their homes, and avoid purchasing them through secondhand websites where they may still be available. If 2020 has taught us anything, it is the importance of taking steps to protect the health and wellness of our loved ones. I encourage parents, grandparents and guardians to proactively check the guide to avoid purchasing a recalled or unsafe children’s product.

If you have questions about products included in the guide, please call the Attorney General’s Product Recall Hotline at 1-888-414-7678 (TTY: 1-800-964-3013). Current and previous editions of the Safe Shopping Guide can be found at the Children’s Product Recall Guides page of the Attorney General’s website.

I wish all Illinois families a safe and healthy holiday season.
