GATHERING IN GOD’S NAME ‘I am the resurrection and the life,’ says the Lord; ‘whoever lives and believes in me shall never die.’ John 11.25–26

Bless the Lord who forgives all our sins Whose mercy endures forever The Lord be with you. And also with you

The Prayer of preparation (page 119 of the prayer book)

Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Confession Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, where for forty days he was tempted by sin. Let us confess together remembering before God the times when we have fallen from temptation into sin. We confess to you our selfishness and lack of love: fill us with your Spirit. Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. We confess to you our fear and failure in sharing our faith: fill us with your Spirit. Christ, have mercy. Christ, have mercy.

We confess to you our stubbornness and lack of trust: fill us with your Spirit. Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. Holy God, holy and mighty, holy and immortal, Have mercy on us.

The absolution

Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to him in faith: pardon you and set you free from all your sins, strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen Let us pray

Life-giving God, your Son came into the world to free us all from sin and death: breathe upon us with the power of your Spirit, that we may be raised to new life in Christ, and serve you in holiness and righteousness all our days; through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

MINISTRY OF THE WORD Psalm 130

Out of the depths have I called to you, O Lord:

Lord, hear my voice;

O let your ears consider well:

the voice of my supplication.

If you, Lord, should note what we do wrong:

who then, O Lord, could stand?

Page 4: A member of the Central Highlands Cluster Ministrymedia.virbcdn.com/files/03/bc1424a4afb45f96-ServiceBooklet290320Lent5.pdfthat God will give you whatever you ask of him.” Jesus

But there is forgiveness with you:

so that you shall be feared.

I wait for the Lord, my soul waits for him:

and in his word is my hope.

My soul looks for the Lord:

more than watchmen for the morning,

more, I say, than watchmen for the morning.

O Israel, trust in the Lord, for with the Lord there is mercy:

and with him is ample redemption.

He will redeem Israel:

from the multitude of their sins. Praise to you Lord Jesus, King of endless Glory Saviour of the world, Saviour of the world. The Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to John chapter 11 beginning at the 1st verse Glory to you Lord Jesus Christ

Now a certain man was ill, Lazarus of Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha. Mary was the one who anointed the Lord with perfume and wiped his feet with her hair; her brother Lazarus was ill. So the sisters sent a message to Jesus, “Lord, he whom you love is ill.” But when Jesus heard it, he said, “This illness does not lead to death; rather it is for God’s glory, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it.” Accordingly, though Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus, after having heard that Lazarus was ill, he stayed two days longer in the place where he was.

Then after this he said to the disciples, “Let us go to Judea again.” The disciples said to him, “Rabbi, the Jews were just now trying to stone you, and are you going there again?” Jesus answered, “Are there not twelve hours of daylight? Those who walk during the day do not stumble, because they see the light of this world. But those who walk at night stumble, because the light is not in them.” After saying this, he told

Page 5: A member of the Central Highlands Cluster Ministrymedia.virbcdn.com/files/03/bc1424a4afb45f96-ServiceBooklet290320Lent5.pdfthat God will give you whatever you ask of him.” Jesus

them, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I am going there to awaken him.” The disciples said to him, “Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will be all right.” Jesus, however, had been speaking about his death, but they thought that he was referring merely to sleep. Then Jesus told them plainly, “Lazarus is dead. For your sake I am glad I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him.” Thomas, who was called the Twin, said to his fellow disciples, “Let us also go, that we may die with him.”

When Jesus arrived, he found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb four days. Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, some two miles away, and many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary to console them about their brother. When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went and met him, while Mary stayed at home. Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. But even now I know that God will give you whatever you ask of him.” Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.” Martha said to him, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day.” Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Those who believe in me, even though they die, will live, and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?” She said to him, “Yes, Lord, I believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God, the one coming into the world.”

When she had said this, she went back and called her sister Mary, and told her privately, “The Teacher is here and is calling for you.” And when she heard it, she got up quickly and went to him. Now Jesus had not yet come to the village, but was still at the place where Martha had met him. The Jews who were with her in the house, consoling her, saw Mary get up quickly and go out. They followed her because they thought that she was going to the tomb to weep there. When Mary came where Jesus was and saw him, she knelt at his feet and said to him, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.” When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her also weeping, he was greatly disturbed in spirit and deeply moved. He said, “Where have you laid him?” They said to him, “Lord, come and see.” Jesus began to weep. So the Jews said, “See how he loved him!” But some of them said, “Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man have kept this man from dying?”

Then Jesus, again greatly disturbed, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone was lying against it. Jesus said, “Take away the stone.” Martha, the sister of the dead man, said to him, “Lord, already there is a stench because he has been dead four days.” Jesus said to her, “Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?” So they took away the stone. And Jesus looked upward and said, “Father, I thank you for having heard me. I knew that you always hear me, but I have said this for the sake of the crowd standing here, so that they may believe that you sent me.” When he had said this, he cried with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” The dead man came out, his hands and feet bound with strips of cloth, and his face wrapped in a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Unbind him, and let him go.”

Many of the Jews therefore, who had come with Mary and had seen what Jesus did, believed in him.

For the Gospel of the Lord praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ

The Prayers of the People

Jesus said: Come to me all who labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. This week in our prayers we commitment anew to our church community: Loving God, We know that you are with each of us as we reflect on what it means to be your church dispersed. We pray that each of us will commit to holding our church family in prayer and will make a greater effort to stay in touch. We pray that you will provide us with opportunities and means to reach

out to our community members who are in need and struggling with being isolated from work, family, and friends. We give thanks and pray for the people who are still working in essential need industries. We pray for all medical teams and hospital staff who are doing all they can for those who are sick or concerned. We pray for people who are not able to work and are at risk of financial hardship. We pray for leaders and governments who are making difficult decisions. We pray for those who are sick or suffering at the moment and we pray especially for: Wendy, Jeanette, Carmela, Jim, Ron, Norma, Michael and Sue, Neil and Stephen, Helen, Colin, Gerard, John, and Sam. Please take a moment now to make your prayers for the people and issues that lay heavy on heart, knowing that God loves you and hears you.

The Greeting of Peace Regardless of where we experience worship this day: We are the body of Christ His Spirit is with us. The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you.

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING

Lift up your hearts to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God as it is right to do.

Page 8: A member of the Central Highlands Cluster Ministrymedia.virbcdn.com/files/03/bc1424a4afb45f96-ServiceBooklet290320Lent5.pdfthat God will give you whatever you ask of him.” Jesus

All glory and honour be yours always and everywhere, mighty Creator everliving God. We give you thanks and praise for your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ, who by the power of your spirit was born of Mary and lived as one of us. He was tempted in every way as we are, yet he did not sin. By his death on the cross and rising to new life, he offered the one true sacrifice for sin and obtained an eternal deliverance for his people. By his grace we are able to triumph over every evil, and to walk in the way of his love. Therefore with angels and archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we proclaim your great and glorious name, forever praising you and saying:

Holy, holy, holy Lord God of power and might,

Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the Highest

Blessed is he who comes in the Lord’s name Hosanna in the Highest

Merciful God, we thank you for these gifts of your creation, this bread and wine, and we pray that by your Word and Holy Spirit, we who eat and drink them may be partakers of Christ’s body and blood. On the night he was betrayed Jesus took bread; and when he had given you thanks he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, ‘Take, eat. This is my body given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.’

Page 9: A member of the Central Highlands Cluster Ministrymedia.virbcdn.com/files/03/bc1424a4afb45f96-ServiceBooklet290320Lent5.pdfthat God will give you whatever you ask of him.” Jesus

After supper, he took the cup, and again giving you thanks he gave it to his disciples, saying, ‘Drink from this, all of you. This is my blood of the new covenant shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.’

Christ has died. Christ is risen.

Christ will come again.

Therefore we do as our Saviour has commanded: proclaiming his offering of himself made once for all upon the cross, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension, and looking for his coming again, we celebrate, with this bread and this cup, his one perfect and sufficient sacrifice for the sins of the whole world. Renew us by your Holy Spirit, unite us in the body of your Son, and bring us with all your people into the joy of your eternal kingdom; through Jesus Christ our Lord, with whom, and in whom, in the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, we worship you, Father, in songs of never-ending praise:

Blessing and honour and glory and power

Are yours for ever and ever. Amen.

With our hearts set on the kingdom and our hands open to serve, we pray as Jesus taught us…

Our Father in heaven,

hallowed be your name, your kingdom come,

your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread.

Forgive us our sins

Page 10: A member of the Central Highlands Cluster Ministrymedia.virbcdn.com/files/03/bc1424a4afb45f96-ServiceBooklet290320Lent5.pdfthat God will give you whatever you ask of him.” Jesus

as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial

and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power,

and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen

Those in attendance are invited to take communion in the form of the bread knowing that Christ is with us in this holy meal

The Sending out of God’s people

Prayer after communion... God of mercy, may we who have gathered in prayer around this holy meal know your forgiveness in our lives, bring your reconciliation to others, and be a sign of your wholeness in this broken world. Holy God, we offer ourselves to you as a living sacrifice through Jesus Christ our Lord. Send us out in the power of your Spirit to live and work to your praise and glory.

Final Hymn –

1. God is our strength and refuge, our present help in trouble; and we therefore will not fear, though the earth should change, though mountains shake and tremble,

Page 11: A member of the Central Highlands Cluster Ministrymedia.virbcdn.com/files/03/bc1424a4afb45f96-ServiceBooklet290320Lent5.pdfthat God will give you whatever you ask of him.” Jesus

though swirling waters are raging: God the Lord of Hosts is with us evermore.

2. There is a flowing river within God’s holy city; God is in the midst of her, she shall not be moved. God’s help is swiftly given, thrones vanish at his presence; God the Lord of Hosts is with us evermore.

3. Come, see the works of our maker, learn of his deeds all-powerful: wars will cease across the world when he shatters the spear. Be still and know your creator, uplift him in the nations; God the Lord of Hosts is with us evermore.
