SONG IN THE SUMMER by Geraldine Jones

The New Voice Festival was established in Glasgow only five years

ago, but already it has become one of the most successful and respected

summer music festivals in the country. While most other festivals are

making safe artistic choices in order to bring in crowds, New Voice has

always presented new and challenging music. It has paid off: the festival

has become incredibly popular. But what is the secret of its success? Low

ticket prices? Clever advertising? That is what I wanted to find out when I

visited the festival last month.

The festival consists of 30 concerts spread over a weekend, with

everything from African tribal music to German electronic music. Each of

the three days runs from 10am until the early hours of the morning. One

festival ticket for £25 gets you into all of the events. The value is

incredible. I spoke to the manager of the festival, Kevin Roberts, and asked

him how he was able to keep the price so low.

"The musicians are playing at the festival because they really love

it," he said, "not because they want to get paid lots of money, and since we

are in Glasgow rather than in London the whole festival costs less overall.

We also have government funding which helps us to make sure that as

many people as possible can access the festival at a low price".

So what makes New Voice so successful? A combination of things.

The ticket price is low, the music is extremely high-quality, and the

marketing is very effective. I thoroughly enjoyed my time at the festival,

and everyone there was very passionate about it. Of the 500 visitors, over

three-quarters said that they would return. I know that I'll be back!

Another car crashed into mine during my lesson today. It was

absolutely terrifying. I never want to go driving again.

5th June

I finally had another driving lesson today, my first one since the

crash. I didn't want to, but my mum made me do it. I was like jelly

at first, very afraid, but eventually I was driving just as I had before.

By the end of the lesson I was buzzing and wanted to go again

tomorrow.

14th June

I passed my driving test yesterday! I was so ecstatic about it that I

forgot to write in my diary at all. I'm so glad that my mum made me
