Many of you have asked about our recent trip to Europe. It started

out as a “bucket list” trip for Peggy, but I think I discovered my own

“bucket list” while we were there. It was an incredible experience

for us to travel to that part of the world. So much natural beauty.

The snow-covered Alps were breathtaking. At one point our tour bus went across a pass in the Austrian

Alps where there were thirty hairpin turns (they were numbered). At another point we stopped at an

aqua-colored glacial lake with the snow-covered Alps behind it. We took a cable car ride in the Swiss

Alps. There were quaint German towns with cobblestone streets, cafes and shops everywhere, all of

which were picture postcard beautiful. We saw castles, including the one from which the Disneyland/

Disneyworld castle is modeled. We saw cathedrals and churches that were awe-inspiring with ornate

decorations and murals on the ceilings. It was at the “plainest” church that I got to hear an afternoon

sacred concert (in German, of course). We saw rivers, like the Rhine, Lake Lucerne, and Alpine ski villages,

and Olympic sites in Munich and Innsbruck. We ate wonderful food, much of it traditional to the area,

although I had to go two solid weeks without a piece of peanut butter pie. And while Peggy went on an

“optional trip” into France, I even was able to play golf in the Black Forest region of Germany. I played

in tennis shoes, with borrowed clubs, on a soggy day, and it was great.

It was a trip with countless fond memories. But also a trip with a few sobering memories. On the second

day of the actual tour, we went into Nuremburg. This was the city where Hitler built a stadium to hold

his massive rallies and parade the troops for his inspection while he stood on a podium, balcony-like

area. Probably you've seen it in documentaries or other historical footage. We stood in what is left of

the stadium, looking up at where Hitler stood. It was cold, foggy, and misting, probably appropriate for

what we were seeing. We went to where the Nuremburg trials were held, an area that is still used as a

courtroom today. And two days later we went to “Eagle’s Nest,” Hitler’s mountain hide-a-way in the

German Alps that was built for him but then rarely used. It is said he felt he would be an easy target for

his enemies on that mountain, plus he was afraid of heights. The day we were at Eagle’s Nest was also

cold, foggy, and misting. At both places there was an eerie reminder that even in a land of such beauty

can come destruction and suffering that affects the whole world.

Our trip to Germany, Austria, and Switzerland was one we will never forget. Thank you for your prayers

for our safety and enjoyment.

October 14th was the last day for Rev. Josephine Sweet, our Minister to Children. As I said at the

end of the service, we are thankful for her years of ministry, for the lives she has touched, and we

pray for Josephine and Paul as they look to their future.

Bible Seekers Study Ruth and Esther

The Bible Seekers Sunday School class began an 18 week study called “Ruth & Esther: Women of Faith, Bravery, and Hope” on October 21st. The study is written by John MacArthur, pastor of the Grace Community Church in Sun Valley, California. This study takes us on a journey through the biblical texts of Ruth and Esther to discover what lies beneath the surface, focusing on meaning and context, and then reflecting on the explored passages. This will be an engaging study and sure to deepen your understanding of scripture and Christian living. All adults and young adults are welcome, especially those new to our church. Please contact Forrest and JoAnne Long at 665-8002 if you are interested or have any questions.

Christian sympathy is extended to

Elma Morrison and family whose

nephew, Gary Kopjanski, died

October 12th, 2012.

Men on a Mission Fundraiser

If you are a man who dishes up some mean cuisine, you are needed! Please consider volunteering to be a chef at this fundraiser on Saturday, Nov. 3rd at 5:00pm at the First Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall. Local men will be making and serving up their signature food items. This event is a major fundraiser for the Winchester Rescue Mission. All funds raised go directly to the mission so this is a local event that benefits local men who find themselves hungry and homeless and

Hunting Ridge Retreat Fall Guidelines

Wood Cutting Rules

Church members needing firewood can call HRR Director Brian Bayliss 662-9004, to request location and

permission to cut wood. Please leave the ash trees at the Ridge in order to control the Asian Long-

Horned Beetles or White-Spotted Sawyer Bugs at a central location.

The policy is to cut one load for the retreat for every two loads for yourself. Leave the HRR load at

the wood pile in front of the tractor shed unless otherwise directed by Brian. Any questions can be

addressed to Jim Christiansen at 667-3873. Please take care when cutting wood at the Ridge.

Hunting at the Ridge

Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) in the local deer population is being monitored by the Department of

Game and Inland Fisheries (DGIF) with the help of local hunters and the published programs listed in

the newspapers and online. Check out www.cwd-info.org for additional information. Pick up a CWD

handout at the Ridge before you hunt, at the store, or go online to www.dgif.virginia.gov. After

obtaining the rules, permission and time to hunt at the Ridge, you may encounter or harvest a CWD

deer. Do not be alarmed, but do not attempt to contact, disturb, or remove the animal. You should

contact the Verona DGIF office (540) 248-9360, as well as, notify Director Brian Bayliss. Enjoy the

outdoors, we will overcome this setback in time.

Facilities Use Policies and Procedures to be Developed

The Administrative Management Committee (AMC) has determined that the church would benefit from documented guidelines for the use of church property (including buildings and vehicles) by church members, outside groups or individuals. Therefore, the Facilities Use Policies and Procedures (FUPP) manual is being developed.

The following factors will be addressed:

1. Coordination. How can the use of facilities among various user groups best be prioritized and coordinated? What is the process for requesting reservation/usage? What tracking information needs to be collected and who needs access to this information?

2. Responsibility. What are the various responsibilities of users and of church staff with respect to use of church facilities?

3. Cost. Who should bear the operational expenses of facilities use? 4. Liability. What liability exists? Who should bear the risk of physical damage or personal

injury related to facilities use? 5. Security. How can the security of church buildings and contents, and the safety of

occupants, best be assured?

Development of the FUPP will be a multi-month undertaking and will require input from many church members, church staff and other parties. AMC members will be contacting people in certain positions to solicit input, but we welcome ideas and suggestions from everyone. Think about how our facilities are used, when, and by whom. What issues have you experienced with respect to use of church property? What suggestions do you have? In what ways can a written policy help us to address the five factors listed above?

You are encouraged to contact Kimberli Ball at 540-662-4055 or [email protected] to share your thoughts. Kim may direct you to another committee member handling the specific area of your concern. Note that the FUPP will not address the Hunting Ridge Retreat property.

The Facilities Use Policies and Procedures will be presented to the Church for approval at a quarterly business meeting in early 2013. Thank you for your thoughtful and prayerful consideration of the issues involved in helping us be good stewards of the facilities with which

we have been blessed.

Storm and Snow Support Needed

As a result of the storms of this summer, the AMC is developing a list of

church members (men, women, youth) who could be called upon to assist in

cleaning up the grounds after damaging storms. This same list of helpers will

be used to put out a call for help in shoveling snow during winter months.

Persons on the list won't be obligated to help at any time, but this will pro-

vide the AMC with a database of church members to email, call or text after such events. The

burden for such work should not fall only on AMC members. The more helpers who come out to

assist, the less time and effort will be required of any one person. Thank you!

Please advise AMC Vice-Chair Jamie Pendleton ([email protected], 540-667-7858) of your

willingness to be on the list and your preferred way to be contacted when events occur. If you

email Jamie, simply put "Grounds Help" in the subject line.

Lord, behold our family here assembled. We thank you for this place in which we dwell for the love that unites us, for the

Healthy Families Include Grandparents

Christian families strive to include grandparents in significant family activities. Not just reunions, weddings or anniversaries but when grandchildren participate in such things as recitals, dramas, school sporting

events, graduations, birthday parties, family day trips and the like.

Why are grandparents greatly important to the raising of children? Dr. Terry Brazelton, an expert on child development, says grandparents are important to a child's sense of roots. Grandparents are storehouses of information about family history. They help the child to understand how he or she fits into the family saga and who the heroes and heroines of the family have been. For truth's sake - Jesus said the truth makes us free - even knowledge of a family 'black sheep' can be told as a lesson to guide children toward more Christ-

like behavior.

Dr. Brazelton suggests parents prepare children for visits to grandparents who live at some distance. He writes to parents: 'Use videotapes, phone calls, stories to keep grandparents close. Tell stories about your

own childhood' (Family Circle).

The Bible points to another contribution of Christian grandparents. Paul wrote to young Timothy these words: 'I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, dwells in you' (2 Timothy 1:5). Faith, too, can be a wonderful heritage from

grandparents.

Lori’s “Senior Moments”

“In the path of righteousness is life, and in its pathway there is no death.” Proverbs 12:28

Aging can be difficult at times, we all go through it. It is important to remember that as our physical appearance may change, God knows our spirits as individuals. If you can have a positive outlook on life you will always be young at heart! We are never too old to realize a new goal or dream. We will always have wisdom and encouragement to offer those around us.

Here are a few inspirational thoughts to ponder:

You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream. C.S. Lewis

The longer I live the more beautiful life becomes. F. L. Wright

To keep the heart unwrinkled, to be hopeful, kindly, and cheerful - that is to triumph over old age. Thomas Aldrich

How beautifully leaves grow. How full of light and color are their last days. John Burroughs

Grow old with me, the best is yet to come! Robert Browning

And in the end, it’s not the years in your life that count, it’s the life in your years. Abraham Lincoln

Resources

Read to Me Bible: FBC has 6 copies of the “Read to Me Bible” available. This bible comes with biblical concepts for babies through kindergarten: including bible verses and phrases, bible skills, illustrations, bible vocabulary and HCSB (Holman Christian Standard Bible) bullet notes. The stories and illustrations aid in making biblical applications. Call the church office if you are interested.

Help Needed

Preschool Staff: If you want to touch the future, come teach our children. Help parents to lay the Faith Foundation with a child and change a child’s life. Curriculum is provided and the only requirements are a willing heart, love for children, and faith to step up.

Other News

Children’s Ministry in Transition: Please be in prayer for our church during this time of transition in our children’s ministry. The ministerial staff, in cooperation with the Children’s Ministry Team, the Nursery Committee and parents and teachers, is involved in developing a plan for the future of that ministry and we ask that all members of FBC pray about how they might support and minister to the children of our church and our community. As we work through this time together, we ask that you direct any questions, concerns, or ideas regarding the children’s ministry to Rev. Kristin Whitesides.

PASSPORTkids! Is a children’s summer camp where every element is integrated to provide an active faith-building experience for 3rd-6th graders. Bible studies, Devotions and Worship are designed to help children discover God’s love and practice being followers of Jesus. Mixed with a healthy dose of the one ingredient that holds the rest together and makes FBC kids anxious to return every year—FUN! This year’s camp theme is TAG! You’re it. Please email Rev. Kristin Whitesides ([email protected]) for additional information and to get in the game!

50 Years Ago in the Tie…

October 19 1962 Tie

Rev. Morris Cather

All of our older members know that Morris Cather, who is preaching for us this Sunday morning, was reared in our

church. His mother (Mrs. Georgia Cather), his grandmother (Mrs. Blanche Shoop), and his sister (Miss Jane Cather) are among our most active members. Morris is a graduate of Handley High School, the University of Richmond (with both B.A. and M.A.) and the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. He was for nine years pastor of Hebron Baptist Church at Gore. Last year he accepted a position as teacher at Hargrave Military Academy at Chatham, Virginia. This is one of our Virginia Baptist Schools. Due to the fact that Morris is in constant demand as a supply minister, and thus unable to attend the Baptist Church at Chatham with any degree of regularity, he brought his membership back to our church where he expects to leave it certainly for the time being. Morris is considered one of the best preachers among Virginia Baptist ministers. Be sure and hear him this Sunday at eleven.

NEED PICTURE

Got Coffee?

Sarah Lewis is part of a student organization at Virginia Tech called Students Helping Honduras.

As part of their fundraiser this fall, she is selling bags of Fair Trade Honduran Coffee. They will

be available around Thanksgiving (she can deliver or ship orders to you) and would make wonderful

Christmas presents. Half of the proceeds go to SHH, and will help her fund a trip to Honduras to

volunteer and help build a school. The bags are $10 each. Orders can be placed through the

church office. Contact Kristin Whitesides if you have any questions.

Coffee and the Church

An 8-year-old girl who lived two doors away from a retired pastor asked him, “Why do you drink coffee?” The surprised pastor answered with a smile, “Because I like the taste of it and it gets me going in the morning.” That pastor might have been interested in this bit of trivia: In 1592, Pope Clement VIII declared coffee to be a legitimate drink for Christians. Before that edict, it had been labeled ‘the wine of the infidels’ because of its popularity among non-Christians.

Please contact Kim Ball at [email protected] or (540) 662-4055. Also, please advise Kim if you served as a
