The Litebook® Elite™
A New Generation of
Light Therapy™
We live in a light-deprived world...
…And we are paying for it with our health.
Why we are ‘light deprived’ Work indoors
Play indoors
Travel indoors
Many now believe that sunlight = bad
ozone layer depletion = > UV radiation
> risk of skin cancer
Avg. exposure 57 mins/day in sunny San Diego! (Dr. Kripke, UCSD 2004)
Are your customers ‘light deprived’…?Are they:
Office worker
Stay-at-home mom
Elderly
Teen
Shift-worker
Business traveler
Anyone…??
You…??
What is S.A.D.? DSM-IV Definition:
Major depression indications, plus:
Relationship between onset of major depressive episodes and particular time of year.
Full remissions also occur at characteristic time of year.
Seasonal depressive episodes substantially outnumber non-seasonal episodes, for > 2 years.
What is ‘Winter Blues’? Sub-syndromal Seasonal Affective Disorder
Similar but milder indications
Not ‘clinically depressed’ -- do not typically require Rx
Often mis-diagnosed or non-diagnosed
Seasonal component as with SAD
SAD Facts: Incidence in Canada:
2-5% (est.)
‘Winter Blues’ - additional 25% (NMHA’02)
Increases with latitude
Gender: 75% Female vs. 25% Male
Age: Typical onset is early 20’s - mid-40’s
SAD Symptoms (Seasonally): Depressed mood most of the day, nearly every day.
Marked diminished interest or pleasure in all, or almost all, activities most of the day, nearly every day.
Decreased energy
Decreased self-esteem
Increased appetite and/or weight
Carbohydrate craving
Hypersomnia
Difficulty concentrating
Irritability
Social withdrawal
Decreased libido
Treatment Options for SAD:
Medications:
SSRI’s (Prozac, Zoloft, etc.)
Wellbutrin XL – newly approved by FDA
Light therapy:
Daily early morning scheduled exposure to bright artificial light
Response rate: range 60% - 90%; avg. 65%
Combined light & medication
Light Therapy for SAD: Long considered ‘alternative therapy’
Now becoming preferred treatment option with psychiatrists, GPs and psychologists
Patient-driven -- many w/ SAD don’t view themselves as having psychiatric illness = do not want to take Rx meds
Some patients do well on Rx; some don’t
Many do better on light therapy than on Rx
FDA review: data on light therapy for SAD is “overwhelming and irrefutable”
Other Indications for Light Therapy: Shift-work
Jet lag
Sleep Disorders –
Delayed Phase Sleep Disorder (DPSD)
Advanced Phase Sleep Disorder (APSD)
Fatigue Management (CFS, MS, Chemo pts.)
Performance enhancement – athletes, execs
‘Baby Blues’ & Post-partum depression
Contraindications for Light Therapy:
No evidence of danger using 10K light boxes – or The Litebook (in market since 2001; 46 countries)
Older patients w/ history of eye problems (cataracts, macular degeneration, diabetes w/ retinopathy) should have eye exam or consult eye doc before using
Corrective laser eye surgery in past 30 days
Currently taking any Rx w/ photosensitivity profile -- UV triggers reaction (Litebook Elite emits NO UV).
Bi-polar on antidepressants could become manic, trigger hypomania = use under careful medical supervision
Recommend consult with MD or ophthalmologist prior to using light therapy
Why does Light Therapy Work?
No definitive answer yet
Bright light does impact melatonin and serotonin levels
Melatonin produced in response to ‘low light’ or ‘no light’
Critical discovery (1979): bright light suppresses melatonin
Critical discovery (2001): blue wavelength light most effective for melatonin suppression
How Light Therapy Works
Mechanism:
Bright light strikes retinal non-visual photoreceptor (melanopsin)
optic nerve
Suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN)
pineal gland
melatonin suppression
phase shift
Melatonin Suppression Curve
Primary = 464nm (blue) Secondary = 550nm (green)
