Principal Examiner Top Tip

Vous pouvez utiliser des mots du texte dans votre réponse mais vous ne devez pas copier des phrases entières. Il n’est pas toujours nécessaire d’écrire des phrases complètes; si possible vous pouvez écrire un seul mot.

Candidates must remember that if they simply copy a whole sentence from a text as one of their answers, either in Section A: Listening or in Section B: Reading, they will not be awarded any marks for that question. Candidates are allowed to use vocabulary used in the texts but they must manipulate the language. For example - A text may be written in the 1st person but candidates will need to answer the question in the 3rd person.

Section C: Translation - Translation into French

Exercise 1 Mark the following candidates’ Question 7 (Translation into French) from the June 2019 WJEC Unit 4 paper. Use the mark scheme below.

Question 7 - Mark Scheme The translation from English/Welsh into French is marked according to AO3. The translation is divided into 4 parts of similar complexity. The examiner will mark each of these 4 parts on a scale of 0-5 using the descriptor below as a guide to determine which mark should be awarded for each section. The examiner will mark positively. The overall mark will be the addition of the total marks for each of the four parts to give a total out of 20. To gain the top band the response does not have to be perfect. A minor slip in gender is acceptable but mistakes with common verbs are not. This will be discussed at the marking conference.

Principal Examiner Top Tip

Accuracy (AO3) is the key assessment objective used in evaluating this task and only some candidates score very high marks. Candidates must ensure that they know the theme- based vocabulary and that they check their translation carefully to eliminate any careless basic errors.

The most common errors include genders, adjectival agreements, pronouns and possessive adjectives, verb forms and tenses, dependent infinitives etc.
