Spring is in the air. Some old-fashioned things like fresh air and sunshine are hard to beat.
Our “Welcome to Eden” sign on Route 62 near Route 75 has taken an unscheduled “vacation.” The return date is on hold. It will be reconstructed as soon as possible. The back of the signs are also in progress
with the help of Eden High School’s Technology Teacher, Stevan Jones and his Technology class.
We have several projects in the works: Our Chamber barn is under repair with steel siding and
new paint. “Eden Holiday Magic” – Our holiday decorations are in
need of renewal. We will be providing more information on this before long.
Eden Chamber’s Annual Chicken BBQ – at the Eden Corn Festival, August 3, 4, 5 & 6. We are GRATEFUL to our members and friends who choose to volunteer again this year!
a Letter from Your PresidentAfter years of hard work and dedication to others, our “2016 Business of the Year” recipient, Dr. Kevin O’Gorman is entering into a new phase of life. Following many years of working as a doctor, Dr. O’Gorman’s hard-earned retirement is almost here. We would like to wish Dr. O’Gorman and his staff all the best in the years to come. THANK YOU!
Birthday wishes to Ferris Randall on his recent 90th birthday. Ferris was our “2014 Citizen of the Year.” Wishing him many more years of friendship with all of us!
Speaking for myself and the members of the Chamber’s Board of Directors, your comments and concerns are always welcome.
Be proud of your hometown. It’s a big part of what makes you the person you are.
Sincerely, Pattie HartmanPresident
A committee, headed by Mary Smith, has been formed in Eden among expert quilters and friends of quilters to bring to Eden “barn quilts.” These are large replicas of handmade quilts made out of wood and other composites that are secured to barns. Their purpose is to bring beauty, a touch of the past, and tourism to our area. The idea is that there will be several barns and large structures that these beautiful quilts will be hung from. A “quilt trail” will be formed, and visitors to Eden will be able to visit these works of art on a mapped tour. This kind of project has been a huge success in other towns, particularly Leroy, NY. Members of the community will be enlisted to help create the quilts. In particular, high school
students may be helping in the building and painting of the quilts.
The Paul Zittel family has kicked off the committee’s efforts by purchasing one of the quilts and hanging it on their Bley Road barn as shown in the picture. The Zittels hope this display of their quilt will get the ball rolling and others will be happy to see more structures dressed in one-of-a-kind quilts. For more information on this project, or if you’d like to help, please call our office at 992-4799.

Bright Beginnings Childcare and PreschoolOne of Eden’s premier businesses tends to the “smallest” of our citizens. Bright Beginnings Childcare &Preschool located at 7633 Gowanda State Road has been operating in our community since 2008. Theowners, Julia & Scott Dzubella, have been life-long Eden residents. From this Eden loyalty comes abusiness that offers a safe, nurturing environment where your child will get the attention and care that heor she needs. Their ratio of children to adults is always within state guidelines – and often even lower – to
make certain each child receives top-quality care. Programs include Infants (Ages 6 weeks - 11⁄2 years; Toddlers (Ages 11⁄2 years – 3); Preschool (Ages 4 - 5 ). A child’s day is highlighted with structure through circle time, music, reading, exercise programs andplan old fun! The Chamber is proud to have The Dzubellas on their team as a member of the Eden Chamber of Commerce!
Looks like Eden is Going to the DogsBy Mike Bolo
Until a few years ago, Eden’s well regarded veterinary of decades longstanding washoused in a modest, old, nondescript building. Then the new ownership invested in avery attractive, nearly sumptuous, new building on the same site. They cater to dogs butinclude other pets as well. Again a few years back Pat O’Brien enlarged his auto washfacility to include a stall for dog washing. If that wasn’t enough, longtime Eden residentand supporter, Robin Evenhouse, bought a Main Street building and, with a partner, setup a dog grooming operation. With all of that tangible and conspicuous evidence, mightone conclude that Eden is going to the dogs?
Celebrate Eden- Something New for the Corn FestBy Mike Bolo
Your Chamber, Eden High School, and the CornFest Committee are collaborating toprovide yet another opportunity for visitors to the CornFest to learn or be reminded of 40plus reasons why Eden is such a wonderful place in which to live, raise a family and/or tooperate a business. Running continuously, we will have a 70 – 90 minute visual only(mixture of photos, charts, mission statement, brief text, DVD, etc.) playing on two largeback-to-back screens under the Chicken BBQ tent. There will also be a smaller screenplaying this somewhere near the lines where visitors pay and then wait for their orders. With adult supervision, our school kids will be putting this project together by gatheringinformation and visuals and will pull this together in a format that we can use withminimal effort.
Themes categorizing the 40 plus groups/entities to be covered include: BusinessFriendly; “Rooted” in Agriculture; Really Caring About Kids; Serving Our Seniors;Honoring Those Who Have Served (Vets); Worshipping in Eden; AdditionalDistinctions.
Be sure to visit our BBQ tent to Celebrate Eden in a “visual” way.

are You a Veteran or Service-Disabled Veteran Looking for assistance in Starting
or Improving a Small Business?By Fran McLaughlin, Board Member
Many veterans can use the skills and leadership ability they have developed in the service, into starting a business. There is a wealth of resources available to veterans through financial assistance, mentoring programs and other training options some of which are:
1.) Much of this information can be found on the SBA website, https://www.sba.gov/starting-business/how-start-business/business-types/veteran-owned-businesses. Or you can contact your local SBA office at 130 S. Elmwood Avenue, Suite 540 Buffalo, NY or call 716-551-4301
2.) The New York SBDC Veterans Services and Assistance Program also works to provide targeted training, counseling, and mentoring to help veterans start and grow a small business. SBDC Business Advisors help veteran small business owners improve profitability, expand market share, explore export opportunities, and provide valuable assistance in terms of establishing businesses on stronger organizational and financial footing. Contact information can be found at: http://www.nyssbdc.org/veterans.html
The Veterans Business advisors provide:
• One-to-one advisement sessions
• Pre-business plan workshops/training
• Business concept assessment
• Business plan development assistance
• Comprehensive feasibility analyses
• Business-to-business commerce
• Assistance with funding sources
These are just a couple of the many resources available to the men and women who have served our country. I will attempt to identify and provide information regarding other resources in future articles.
Thank You for Your Service

Dedication Ceremony of Eden’s Blue Star Marker
June 10, 2017 • 11:00 A.M. Newell Faulkner Post 880 American Legion
On June 10, 2017, the Eden Garden Study Club will dedicate Eden’s Blue Star Memorial Marker. The marker honors all men and women who have served, are serving, or will serve in the armed forces of the United States.
After fourteen months of planning and organizing, Eden’s Blue Star committee members, Michelle Wilson, Sue Eye, Marlene Sullivan, Carol Paskuly, Joyce Haag, Michelle Haag, and KC Zugger, along with the club members, will dedicate the marker. The ceremony, designed for our community, will take place Saturday, June 10, 2017 at 11:00 AM inside the Newell Faulkner Post 880, American Legion located on Legion Drive in Eden. All are welcome, particularly Blue and Gold Star Families.
Blue Star BannerSince WWI, a blue star banner displayed in the front window of a home told others that a family member was serving in the armed forces. Also known as the service flag, the blue star stands for hope and pride.
When service members lost their lives, the blue star was replaced by a gold star representing the sacrifice. A silver star stood for someone incapacitated at home from wounds sustained overseas.
The flag made its appearance again in WWII. In 1943, congress authorized the flag as an official design.
Although the service flags virtually vanished during the Korean and Vietnam Wars, they appeared again during the Persian Gulf War in 1991, the Iraq War and the War on Terror.
The history of the Blue Star marker dates back to 1944. At the close of WW II, when the Garden Club of New Jersey, seeking to honor the men and women who had fought to preserve our country, planted a living memorial of 1000 flowering dogwood trees on a five mile stretch of highway that had been designated the “Blue Star Drive” by the state legislature. The project was named for the blue star flag that hung in the windows of homes and businesses to honor service men and women.
Blue Star Memorial MarkerIn 1945, the New Jersey highway commissioner proposed the NCSGC adopt the program of a memorial highway traversing every state. At the National Council of State Garden Clubs annual meeting in 1946, the proposed project was adopted. In 1947, the “official” marker was designed to identify the highways.
Though, originally the Blue Star Markers were to honor WW II veterans, in 1951 the NCSGC enlarged its mission to include all men and women who had served, were serving, or would serve in the armed forces of the United States.
For 73 years, Federated garden clubs have been creating a ribbon of memorial markers spanning the continental United States, Hawaii and Alaska.
Thank You to those Who Contributed to Eden’s “Welcome Packets”The Eden Chamber has made a practice of having “Welcome Packets” on hand to give to new residents of Eden when they visit the Town Clerk’s office. Once again, the Eden Central School and the Eden Chamber of Commerce have partnered to host the 3rd annual Shadow Day on April 27th. Students from the Junior/Senior High School learned about what it takes to run a business, to do some hands-on chores, and speculate what it might take to manage or own a similar type of business they visited. The following eleven Eden businesses participated this year with more than 20 students shadowing them. We also had other businesses willing to take a student or two, but there weren’t quite enough students to go around! Thanks to those folks for their willingness to help out! We sincerely want to thank all involved!

As people pass by on Route 62 coming into and leaving Eden, they notice a block building painted with bright colors with images of butterflies, seed packets and delicious looking vegetables. That work of art is the home of Eden Chamber of Commerce member, Eden Valley Growers. Not only do you notice the building with the mural that had been painted by Eden Central art students, but you will notice other large structures bordering around the property. Someone not from our area may wonder what goes on there.
Since 1956, the Eden Valley Growers has set the bar for the distribution of homegrown produce. The idea was and is to work together in an industry that is extremely tenuous. Why not combine the individual strengths of each farm making for high quality products. This train of thought makes for a successful business practice as the Growers have proven.
In the beginning, the co-op consisted of 22 growers providing 100,000 boxes of produce a year. Currently, the co-op is comprised of 7 growers farming 2,200 acres and producing 500,000 boxes of produce a year. The co-op’s members are Amos Zittel & Sons, Henry W. Agle and Sons, Inc., W.D. Henry & Sons, MCR Farms, Draudt Farms, Kenneth Henry & Sons, and Henry’s Gardens. From these members, the Board of Directors consists of Kevin Zittel, President, Les Draudt, Vice President, Karyn Agle-Sullivan, Secretary, David Zittel, and Jonathan Agle. To keep business moving along smoothly, the Board meets once a month.
The business is a year-around operation with the bulk of the busyness from mid-May to mid-December. The daily operations are headed up by Gary Balone, General Manager, David Walczak, Sales & Operation Manager, and Keith Baskerville, Quality Assurance & Dock Operations.
Over sixty different commodities pass through Eden Valley Growers facility including green peppers, lettuces (green leaf, red leaf, Romaine, and Boston), corn (bi-color & white), cabbage, broccoli, green & yellow squash, eggplant, kale, cauliflower, cucumber, and several varieties of hot peppers. The Growers also process products from non-members such as carrots, radishes, potatoes, beets,
and green onions. As times change, the co-op is handling some organically grown produce.
Due to the ever increasing demands for fresh-from-the-farm produce, Eden Valley Growers maintains various coolers to meet the refrigeration needs of specific vegetables. A vacuum cooler is used to preserve various lettuces. The hydro cooler refrigerates Eden’s famous corn while the forced air cooler maintains perfect temperatures for peppers, cucumbers, and summer squash. The newest cooler, a slush ice cooler, keeps broccoli truly farm fresh.
The facility follows food safety standards set out through Good Agricultural Practices (GAPs), PRIMUS (a third party auditing company), and Integrated Pest Management (IPM).
Currently, the Eden Valley Growers employs 20 seasonal employees as drivers and on the docks.
Many of us have taken advantage of the great deals available from May to late June at the open market located at Eden Valley Growers’ site. The pavilion-style farm market is leased to D & J Brawdy farms to sell perennial and annual plants and related supplies during planting season.

Eden Valley Growers... continued from previous page
Bragging rights for the Growers is that they are the longest standing model of a co-op in New York State for produce. They have also been named Business of the Year of the NYS Agricultural Society; 2016 Friends of Extension; Corn Festival Hall of Fame 2014; and WNY Food Hub 2014.
A business is only as good as its management. In the case of the Eden Valley Growers, Gary Balone, Sr. has worked his way through the ranks to become General Manager. He has worked over 50 years starting with a chance assignment as a teenager “just to give an extra hand.” He has been instrumental in growing the business at the Growers. It’s obvious Gary has trouble just sitting back and letting the world pass him by. His ingenuity, drive, and get-up-and-go has pushed the Growers to their current standing in the
business community across the State. With the support of David Walczak, and Keith Baskerville, Gary and the Board of Directors manages to see their business plan come together each day.
It was a pleasure to visit the staff and facilities at the Eden Valley Growers. It clearly is a landmark, so to speak, for the Eden community. The operations at the Growers speaks of the heart of the driving force behind our town – that of our farming community. Without our farms and the Eden Valley Growers our town would be a completely different place to call home. The Board of Directors at the Chamber hold our farms and the Eden Valley Growers in highest regard. Onto the 2017’s growing and harvesting season – may God’s blessings be with you at the Eden Valley Growers!

Dear Members:
Finally, spring is upon us! The farmers are planting and the Chamber is looking forward to aproductive rest of the year.
The past several weeks, the hot topic has been funding of the new Eden Central School sign.Well, thanks to some generous donations such as the Eden Community Foundation, SharonBaur, Howard Stresing and family, and many others who gave donations in honor of ourschool and its students past and present. Our goals were quickly met as this project tookapproximately 2 ½ months. This speaks to the whole community and the Town of Eden. Onceagain, our community comes through!
In our efforts to bring awareness to our membership and get involved more with the future ofour students, we are hosting a Membership Pizza Party on Tuesday, May 6th at the FourCorners Café. At 6:30 p.m – 8 p.m. Our guests are the business students from Eden Central. We hope that working together and explaining how the Chamber works with our potentialfuture business owners will be a positive, productive move for our community’s future. Wewill be discussing the Chamber’s goals and take suggestions from our audience as to whatthey would like to see the Chamber doing.
I especially want to welcome our new members! They are listed in this newsletter. I hopethat all who read this will support these businesses to show their belief in the future of Edenand support the Chamber’s efforts to represent all our businesses to the total community.
As many of you know, we have moved into the Smith Building and are in the process ofpurchasing a new and exciting sign for the front of the building to notify everyone that theChamber is vibrant and committed to the future of Eden.
We are also developing a website which can be used by any of our business members toadvertise their special events and to provide an electronic directory for members to list theirservices in a state-of-the art fashion. Our office will manage the website for our members.
Before you know it, our famous Chicken BBQ during the Corn Festival will be upon us! Asalways, we are looking for our fellow members for support of any kind during this busy time. Please give some thought to reaching out to us as a volunteer. The more the merrier!
Thanks, Paul Zittel, President
A Note From Stacey As we slowly get into spring, I hope you are all beginning to feel refreshed as things begin toget greener. Here at the Chamber office, the Board and I are enjoying revitalization of theChamber’s purpose. Our Board is proactive and supportive of each other. There are a lot ofgreat ideas that come from a group of people that have a similar vision. To name a few, weare close to finalizing a website for the Chamber and its members. It will be available for thepurpose of being an electronic resource for folks looking for services in Eden and a news hubfor the town and businesses. Our outside office sign should be appearing this late spring. Ouroffice wall sign looks pretty sharp too! The wheels are beginning to turn in preparation for thechicken BBQ at the Corn Festival. We will be looking for help, so give it some thought. Ipromise you won’t regret spending a little time with us! All you business members should bereceiving a surprise soon either in the mail or delivered by one of the Board members. Hopeyou will be very proud of it! It’s our way of saying ‘you really matter.’ I’m looking forwardto a beautiful rest of the year and want to thank all of you for supporting the Chamber andmyself. It’s great to live in Eden!
