Clinic NewsA special thank you goes to all the clinic moms/dads who take time out of their busy schedules to assist in the clinic. However, the number of volunteers is dwindling and there are many days without clinic volun-teers to assist our students.

If you have one morning or after-noon a month that you can volunteer (8:00-11:00 Am or 11:00 Am-2:00 pm), please let us know your avail-ability. If you are able to sub when a clinic volunteer isn’t available, please let us know that, as well. please contact martha brosseau - [email protected]

The main responsibility of the clin-ic volunteer is to contact a parent when a student is not feeling well. No medical assistance is given and the office staff is available to assist whenever needed.

your kindness, caring nature and compassion help make the clinic a more comfortable place for the stu-dents to come when they are not feeling well.

Athens High School Closed Campus PolicyStudents are expected to remain on campus for the entire school day including the lunch period. No student should leave campus without proper authorization. Specifically, only students who have an official, autho-rized pass from the attendance office may leave the building. “Testing Out” PolicyState law states that “the board of a school district shall grant high school credit in any course to a pupil enrolled in high school, but who is not enrolled in the course, who has exhibited a reasonable level of mastery of the subject matter of the course by attaining a grade of not less than C+ (77%) in a final exam in the course.” For students graduating in 2014 or after, credit will be awarded for courses in which a student successfully tests out.

If a student is interested in testing out of a course, there are four resources available from the Assistant principal's Office:

• Parent/Student Information Sheet• Waiving a Course Through Testing Out Authorization and Notification Form• Test Expectations for Specific Tests• Michigan Department of Education • Frequently Asked Questions

beyond the information sheets, the district will not supply textbooks or other class materials. The intent of testing out is not for students to study on their own or to teach themselves. The intent is that students who know the subject matter will be able to demonstrate mastery through their performance on the test and move into the next course in sequence.

If a student wants to test out of a course, the parents must complete and submit the “Waiving a Course through Testing out Authorization and Notification Form.”

After identifying what tests are required, a testing schedule will be created. Tests will be given during the months of April, May and June. After all requests have been received, principals, in consultation with other administrators and teachers, will determine the exact dates and testing locations and communicate those to students and parents.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR PARENTS

procedures for deliveries and communication with students during the school day:

In order to communicate and make necessary deliveries to your student in the building during a school day, we need your assistance. Our goal is to provide communication to and with your student with minimal interruption to the academic process.

• In an emergency, if you have a delivery or message for your student, drop it off in the Attendance Office. Use the sign in sheet and leave the item (s) on the table. The Attendance Office will display your student's name on the TV screen in their classroom so they are aware that they need to go to the office to pick up their item(s).

• Unless there are specific dietary needs, fast food and take out lunch deliveries are not allowed.

• If a student is providing food for a classroom party/event, the items must be dropped off in the teacher’s classroom before school begins in the morning.

• Absences and/or early dismissal phone calls should be made first thing in the morning so there is adequate time to inform the student to come pick up their early dismissal pass. The Attendance Office will display your student's name on the TV screen in their classroom so they are aware that they need to go to the office. If last minute arrangements are needed due to an emergency, please call the student’s Assistant principal.

• All previous graduates of Athens should make arrangements to visit their former teachers before and after regular school hours. Visiting during lunch at the Terrace Café is always a great option. Visits during school will be restricted to alumni that have secured arrangements in writing by the host teacher.

We appreciate your assistance with these procedures. If you have questions or concerns, please contact your student’s Assistant principal.

Thank you.

Athens Band BoostersMarching Band Takes 8th Place at State Championships

The Troy Athens Red Hawk march-ing band completed its regular 2014 competitive marching season with an awesome, crowd-pleasing per-formance of its show “bonnie and Clyde” at the michigan Compet-ing bands Association State Finals at Ford Field on November 1. The 115-member band placed 8th in the highly competitive Flight I category, earning a score of 88.975. bands at state finals are judged in six catego-ries on both their music and their on-field performance. This year Athens received scores as high as 4th place in those categories at state finals.

The Red Hawks marching band was also invited for a second year to play at a Red Wings Hockey game and played for an enthusiastic crowd on the steps of joe Louis Arena on November 9. Afterwards students and parents watched the Red Wings take on the Tampa bay Lightning.

To finish the season, the band per-formed before a national audience, marching in America’s Thanksgiving parade ® on November 27 in de-troit. The Athens marching band has participated in the Thanksgiving pa-rade for 35 of its 40 years. In keep-ing with Red Hawk marching band parade tradition, students wore new or gently used coats to keep warm while waiting to march and then do-nated the coats to a warming shelter in detroit after the parade.

Winter Guard International Drumline Competition at AthensThe Athens band boosters will host a Winter Guard International (WGI) indoor drumline competition at Ath-ens on February 7. Indoor percus-sion ensembles will compete using a variety of percussive instruments and other props to bring music and themes to life while displaying tech-nique, creativity, and expressions. The lines also march and/ or per-form dance movements that add visual interest to their shows. Visit www.athensband.com in mid-jan-uary for complete information and the starting time of the competition.
