MAKING HISTORY

Nestled in the County Durham landscape in nine acres of woodland and overlooking the River Wear, the building provides a picture-perfect backdrop whether you’re planning an intimate ceremony or an extravagant do.

The halls of the castle hold many stories and tales of the people who have passed through the property over the centuries, making it the ideal place for you to add your own piece of history into Lumley Castle should you choose it as the location to tie the knot.

Now part of the No Ordinary Hotels Group; the castle takes its name from its original owner in the fourteenth century, Sir Ralph Lumley.

A respected nobleman and courageous soldier, Ralph Lumley was well-known for his involvement in several key battles, playing a prominent role in the defence of Berwick-upon-Tweed and leading the attack at the Battle of Otterburn in 1388.

However, it was at this battle that he was captured by the Scots and imprisoned for a year until his

release in 1389. After this, Ralph Lumley petitioned the Bishop of Durham for permission to convert his family’s manor house and create the building we know as Lumley Castle today.

Ralph Lumley’s success was short lived as he found himself incarcerated once more in 1400 with his son Thomas, for their role in the Epiphany Uprising - the plot to overthrow Henry IV and restore Richard II.

As a result of this they were both stripped of their titles and executed, at which time Lumley Castle was forfeited to the Earl of Somerset.

Tragically, Ralph Lumley’s wife – Lady Lily Lumley – also met an ill-fated end when she was murdered by local priests for rejecting the Catholic faith.

Lumley Castle is a stunning venue which is not only popular for its regal quality

and picturesque setting but also its rich history, which spans more than 600 years…

Her body was then thrown down a well at Lumley Castle, which still stands on the grounds to this day. It is thought that her ghost still haunts the halls of her former home.

The castle remained under the Earl’s ownership until his death in 1421 but as a result of the Earl leaving behind no heirs, the castle was returned to the Lumley family by Elizabethan law and ownership was restored to Ralph’s grandson, Thomas.

Following in his grandfather’s footsteps, Thomas Lumley proved himself to be a gallant and noble soldier on the battlefield, playing important roles in key battles such as the War of the Roses and the successful siege of Bamburgh Castle.

Seeming to have shaken off his family’s bad luck, Thomas found himself appointed Constable of Scarborough Castle for life in 1461 - the same year his family’s peerage was restored.

Having spent many years fighting valiant battles, Thomas Lumley lived until 1485 at which point his son, George, succeeded him and there began 400 years of stability at Lumley.

The family continued to play a prominent role in court and society, influencing the people

of Chester-le-Street well into the nineteenth century.

All who spent time living in the property put their own modifications and decor into Lumley Castle, much of which can still be seen and admired in the unique venue today.

A truly charming setting for your marriage ceremony or wedding reception, the majestic turrets, decadent rooms and regal décor will ensure that you and your guests spend a very special day you will never forget.

No matter if the decision is to hold an intimate ceremony for selected loved ones or an extravagant celebration for many, Lumley Castle will provide the perfect backdrop for you and your partner to begin the first day of the rest of your lives.

And with an expert team of wedding coordinators standing by, you can rest assured that your every need will be taken care of and all measures will be taken to

ensure that we are able to deliver on every aspect of your big day.

So whether the guest list is as large at 150 or as few as 2, when it comes to transforming our selection of rooms into the setting you have always dreamed of, the options are endless.

From the ornate four poster bed you wake up in to the glittering chandelier overhead as you exchange your vows and the fireworks exploding over the elegant silhouette of the building, Lumley Castle will provide you and your guests with a magical day you will remember forever.

Rooms inside the main castle are packed with surprises. All uniquely designed, many feature ornately carved four-poster beds and some feature other little surprises.

Bathrooms are often hidden behind wardrobe doors or bookcases, adding a touch of fun and magic to your stay, and guaranteeing a night you will remember for many years to come.

your final one spent as a singleton, or the start to your married life.

Our bridal suite, the magnificent King James Suite, is perhaps the jewel in our crown and offers an experience like no other.

Formerly the castle’s chapel, it boasts a 20ft high four-poster Queen Anne bed, draped in black and ruby damask which beautifully complements the crimson and gold wallpaper and brass and ivory light fittings.

It also features its own reception room and lounge area, a jet bath and full en-suite facilities along with unrivalled views across the surrounding parkland, and is a firm favourite among honeymooners and those seeking a truly romantic, relaxing escape.

Away from the main castle keep are the charming courtyard rooms. These have been expertly converted from what was once the castle’s stable block, and now

offer stylish accommodation with modern amenities.

WHEN it comes to dining, there’s nothing quite like taking your place in your own private dining room and enjoy a lavish feast with your special guests.

And as hosting dinner the night before your wedding is becoming more and more popular, here at Lumley we pull out all the stops to make your event almost as memorable as the big day itself.

We have two smaller dining rooms for those who want to host a special party or event in the privacy of their own exclusive space.

And because it’s Lumley, you can rest assured you’ll enjoy a unique room with exciting features, certain to impress all of your guests.

The Gilt is the larger of the two, offering fine dining for up to 16 people in a stunning, candlelit room while The Sceptre offers very similar surroundings for up to 12 guests.

We know that not everyone wants the same thing, which is why we also offer our exciting private carvery option.

We Cook, You Carve is our unique private dining option, where you can enjoy a succulent roast of your choice in the comfort of your own private dining room.

Give your guests the perfect start to the night with a welcome drink on arrival, before you enjoy an antipasto sharing board with fresh bread.

Then it’s on to a roast of your choice with all of the trimmings. This is served on a carving board ready for

the host to carve at the table – and we even provide chef’s hat and apron for the full effect.

Our succulent roasts are served with a selection of traditional accompaniments, including Yorkshire Pudding, seasonal vegetables, roast potatoes and gravy, all of which are delivered to your dining room for guests to serve themselves.

Private carveries are available for groups of more than six adults.

What is the best thing about working at Lumley?

There are so many reasons why working at Lumley is great because there is always something new coming along to be involved with.

Which is your favourite room at the castle and why?My favourite room is the Garter Suite as it has a won-derful ornate ceiling and the fact that it is all white means you have an almost blank canvas to create all kinds of themes and colour schemes. The room has so much history and some of the creative light effects that can be made in that room are fantastic.

What makes a wedding at Lumley so special?Weddings here are so special because of all the finish-ing touches we can add to make the rooms look amaz-ing and add a personal feel to each wedding couple. Our operations team meet every couple prior to the special day and run through their requirements start to finish which ensures they have the perfect day.

Which is your favourite room and why? I love the regal feeling you get when you walk into the Barons Hall and how you have the old stone brickwork in the Dungeon Bar area. I love this room so much that it is the room I have chosen to get married in myself.

What makes a wedding at Lumley so special? The castle! It is every little girl’s dream to be a princess and get married in a castle.

With so many styles and embellishments to choose from, finding your perfect dress can seem like a daunting task if you don’t know where to start – but that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

Many women go into bridal boutiques with a solid idea of the dress they are looking for, only to fall in love with a dress that is the complete opposite of what they envisioned.

It’s important to remember that almost any dress can look beautiful on a hanger, but it isn’t until you’ve tried several styles on that you can start to properly narrow down what works best for your body and the style of your wedding.

Whether you’ve been dreaming of a voluptuous skirt with a long train or a shapely, fitted gown, there are a lot of other elements to consider.

Every bride wants to feel beautiful on their wedding day and the wedding dress is a big part of that, but it’s also important to factor practicality into your decision.

It may well be the most expensive piece of clothing you’ll ever buy and yet it’s

highly likely you’ve never tried a bridal gown on before, so here are our tips for getting it right.

19www.lumleycastle.comwww.lumleycastle.com

If you’ve been looking forward to hitting the dance floor at the evening do with your friends and family, then you may want to reconsider that monarch train you’ve been eyeing up in the bridal magazines and opt for a shorter chapel train instead.

Mermaid cuts work well to create an hourglass shape which will flatter your curves, whereas a larger skirt and a fitted bodice creates a very feminine look – after all there’s a reason it’s called the princess cut.

And it’ll be in the photographs you’ll be showing your relatives for years to come so you want to try and pick a dress that you will still love ten years down the line.

This doesn’t mean you have to choose a plain or simple dress however, as there are ways to incorporate both modern and traditional elements into a dress in order to make the style appear timeless.

Embellishments are very popular this year and choosing a dress with a layer of lace over the skirt or detail in the bodice adds a textured element which can give it a vintage, tailored appearance.

And while you may be paying a lot of attention to how you imagine the

skirt of your gown will look as you walk down the aisle, for the most part it’s the bodice that everyone will be looking at.

While strapless dresses with sweetheart necklines are still very popular, more and more brides are now gearing towards dresses with sleeves or a high-neck insert.

Delicate sleeves of lace can add an extra element of intricacy to your gown, whether you opt for a full sleeve, off the shoulder or a high-neck insert and this also adds detail to the back of your dress which is the perfect way to achieve the ‘wow’ factor to dazzle your guests.

The most important thing to remember when shopping for your wedding dress is to make the most of the process and keep an open mind.

Whether it takes trying on five dresses or fifty, you’ll know when you’ve found the one.

Unlike cake or flowers, you can’t sample your wedding photographs before they are taken, so it’s important to do your research to make sure you have the picture perfect day of your dreams.Wedding photographers are in hot demand and you may find the popular ones are often booked up many months in advance. This means it’s never too early to start looking to help you avoid falling in love with someone’s work, only to find that they’re unavailable for the date of your wedding.Luckily, in the age of digital and social media, it’s never been easier to check out a photographer’s work without even having to contact them.Make sure you browse a photographer’s website or Instagram page to see examples of their images and when you find a few that you like, it’s time to set up appointments to meet them in person.Ask to see an example of a wedding album they have created before so that you can be confident they can provide the photographs you want to remember the big day – after all, you’ll be looking back on these for years to come.As well as print photography, another option for immortalising your special day is to enlist the help of a videographer. Videography packages are becoming increasingly popular, with more people than ever opting to have a professional film made so that they can relive the highlights of their day whenever they please and share it with people outside of the guest list. When it gets nearer the wedding it is a good idea to meet with your photographer at Lumley Castle to run through the day so you can make sure that the pictures they

will be taking are the ones you will be happy to display on your mantelpiece.Lumley Castle provides a stunning backdrop for photographs, whether you’re looking for a picture perfect pose on the staircase, candid shots while you’re getting ready in one of our exquisite rooms or a group picture making the most of the idyllic setting that surrounds the property. With this in mind, it is worth asking your photographer if they have worked a wedding at Lumley before as their expertise may save you a lot of planning if they already have an idea of which locations make the best photos. And don’t forget to check roughly how much time your photographer will need so that it doesn’t interfere with the rest of the day’s schedule. After all, you don’t want to leave your guests waiting around for an hour with nothing to do or cause chaos at the reception by showing up later than expected and delaying the meal.Whether you choose to stick with print photography or add videography into your wedding, the last decision is considering what

medium you want to receive the final product in.Traditionally wedding photographs were delivered in a wedding album, however many studios now offer the opportunity to receive your images or video on a memory stick or DVD. Make sure all of these details have been covered with your photographer before the big day and that your final decision is clearly written down. You may not see your photographer again until the wedding, but you can be safe in the knowledge that your day can run smoothly as all of the planning has been thoroughly taken care of.

Although traditionally a wedding cake was a three-tiered creation of fruit cake, royal icing and marzipan, times are changing and couples now have more freedom than ever when it comes to making that all-important choice.

Anything goes so if you’re a stickler for tradition or you want to create something individual and highly personal, there’s plenty of scope for creating the cake of your dreams.

Even if you choose to keep it white and traditional, you might think about decorating it with soft white fondant and buttercream instead of stiff royal icing to allow for a greater choice in flavours and a more textured finish.

When it comes to adding colour, there are countless number of ways to inject a personal touch into the cake, whether you decide to go all out and have an eccentrically coloured cake or choose a subtle tint to nod to the wedding’s colour scheme.

And while fruit cake is both tasty and reliable when it comes to holding the structure of an elaborately tiered cake, more and more people are leaning towards sponge for greater freedom with flavours.

Popular choices now include chocolate, vanilla, red velvet or maybe even all three in different tiers - with even more choice when it comes to filling.

Or if a tiered cake isn’t up your street, why not choose a pyramid of smaller desserts?

Anything from profiteroles to doughnuts and cupcakes can be decorated to make a stunning display to impress your guests the same way a traditional cake would, especially when they each get a mini dessert of their own to take home.

But no matter what ideas you have for your cake, remember that it is your special day and therefore it is a better idea to choose something you are happy with as opposed to trying to find a cake that will please everyone else.

LET THEMEAT CAKEFrom classic white to splashes of colour,

from traditional fruitcake to decadent red velvet, there is no right answer when it comes to choosing your wedding cake.

REAL LIFE WEDDINGSAT LUMLEY CASTLE

Jessica andGary StevensMarried 31/12/2017When Gary and Jessica got engaged on 24 September 2016, Jessica knew Lumley Castle was the venue of her dreams less than a week later… before she had even seen it. “I really wanted to get married in a castle so I did lots of research into venues and castles in the area. Lumley was by far my first choice.“When I rang to get more details, the wedding coordinators were amazing! I booked the same day without even viewing the venue. I knew Lumley Castle was the one.”And when asked to pick a favourite part from the day, Jessica is spoilt for choice. “The whole day was so magical and we both loved every second of it, from walking down the aisle to the last dance, we had so much fun and both had massive smiles on our faces all day.”

Antonia andRichard DochertyMarried 16/02/2018Antonia and Richard knew their perfect wedding venue had to be one that would stand out. “The castle had the personality we had been looking for and we knew all our guests would be taken aback by the stunning venue.”With many family members travelling from abroad, Antonia and Richard wanted a venue that could accommodate their guests overnight as well as for

both the ceremony and evening celebrations.

“The staff exceeded all my expectations when looking after my guests and also us on the day. Nothing was any trouble and they were more than happy to assist us with whatever issues we had. We wouldn’t have wanted to have our wedding anywhere else.”

Christopher andKristian DavisonMarried 21/12/2015After getting engaged on 9 August 2002, Christopher and Kristian tied the knot on 21 December 2015. When choosing where to hold their special day, Lumley Castle ticked all the boxes.“We wanted somewhere that was elegant and impressive to look at, also a place that was very professional.”And the couple have too many treasured memories from the day to choose just one. “We could not pick one thing, everything about the day was our favourite part. The venue exceeded all our expectations.”

Rebecca andGareth ThravesMarried 13/08/2009When it came to picking her wedding venue, Rebecca had her eye on Lumley Castle longer than most brides. “I could see the castle from my bedroom window as a child and always thought it was a magical place.”And viewing the venue as an adult, the castle was just as she had imagined.“We wanted a beautiful setting, exceptional service and delicious food and Lumley had all three. We walked into the Barons Hall and just thought “wow!” We knew then that it was the venue for us.”

There are many happy couples who decided to tie the knot at Lumley Castle, so why not join them? Here are just a few to tell you how they made the decision.

At Peony and Gold our weddings

Bespoke design is all about

these perfect for you.

Whether you want your flowers to command your guests’ attention or subtly complement the setting, there are many factors to consider when it comes to planning the floral element of your wedding.

Flowers can make or break a wedding, so consulting with an experienced florist is imperative to make sure your floral arrangements wow your guests rather than clash with your colour scheme.

A ballpark figure of how much you are looking to spend will not only stop you overspending but also means you can work with your florist to find creative ways to achieve your desired effect, whatever your budget.

Large, exotic flowers will be more expensive than something seasonal but if you have your heart set on a particular bloom, your florist may be able to find a way to create your dream bouquet without breaking the bank.

Using a few bigger, statement flowers among complementary smaller ones will create the desired impact without taking a big chunk of your budget.

And although the bridal bouquet may be one of your top priorities, there are several other floral elements usually incorporated into a wedding for you to consider.

The bridesmaids’ bouquets, petals for the flower girl and a fresh pop of colour in the groomsmen’s button holes can all work to complement the overall colour scheme and make the wedding party look cohesive.

And, should your budget allow, adding a floral element to the table centrepieces is an easy way to tie the room together.

Popular centrepieces include birdcages, glass jars and even china tea cups, all of which can be accessorised with flowers to create a stunning display for your guests.
