Are you one of those people who makes New Year's reso-lutions ? If your list includes getting a new job, you

may be asking yourself: Where do I even begin? The followingare a few tips for getting started, and for staying motivatedin your job search.

Give yourself a break.

If you have experienced job loss, you may have experi-enced periods of depression, hopelessness, and perhaps evenembarrassment. Looking for work can be difficult when youare already down and lacking in self-confidence. If you arenot an extrovert to begin with, putting yourself out there andmarketing yourself to potential employers may seem like aninsurmountable step outside of your comfort zone. You arenot alone in this experience, so be gentle on yourself forwhatever emotions you may be experiencing.

Go shopping — no kidding!

Starting with a make-over can help boost the confidenceyou need to approach employers. If finances are a barrier toaccessing interview-worthy clothes and/or a haircut, speakto your WorkBC employment services advisor. If eligible, youmay be assisted with referrals to services in the communitylike Wear2Start, a non-profit agency which offers make-overs to women preparing for job search or just starting anew job.

Set weekly goals — and make them SMART goals (Specif-ic, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Timely).

Experiencing the roller coaster of responses and rejectionsfrom employers can sap your motivation. It may be difficultto keep your eye on the ultimate goal of landing that job atthe end.

Set weekly goals for yourself that you can feel confident inbeing able to achieve, so you can complete steps towardsyour employment goal and monitor your progress.

Increase your support network.

Your weekly goals may include career exploration exercisessuch as online labour market information research, or con-ducting informational interviews. Perhaps your employmentservices advisor has also advised you to complete a careerassessment to better match your skills and interest to withspecific job opportunities. Discussing your thoughts and find-ings can help you process and reaffirm your learning, andhelp you focus your goals for more effective job search. Finda sounding board, not only in your employment services advi-sor, but among friends and family members or others whoknow you well.

And who better to understand what you are going throughthan others who are also looking for employment? Attend ajob club at your nearest WorkBC Employment Centre for oncea week peer support and networking, or simply to enjoy acoffee break from the full-time job of looking for work.

Expectations can also fall short when it comes to family.Recognize that a Hallmark version of your family life is notrealistic. Trying to change your loved ones to fit your ideal isa recipe for conflict. “Acknowledge and accept that peoplewill be who they want to be, not who you want them to be,”advises Barbara. You can only control your own behaviour andhow you react to others. So instead of trying to change them,change the way you respond to them.

If you spent the holiday lobbing emotional daggers at oneanother, leave the unsavoury memories behind and reconnectwith yourself. Rediscover a favourite trail, dive into a goodbook, or take a yoga class. Imagine the stress of the holidaysmelting away with each cleansing breath.

If that special someone is missing from your life, reach outto friends. Share photos with them of holidays past, or of atime when things looked brighter. Note of clarification: Thebenefits of this practice are far greater if you are sitting be-side that friend, not posting to her Facebook page. In fact,too much time spent on Facebook and Instagram can drag youdown. Comparing your (unfiltered) holiday to the carefullycurated version you see on social media is likely to stir feel-ings of envy.

Spruce up your calendar with a few fun outings. Organize aget together or a weekend away — something to look forwardto. If you cannot afford a spa day, invite a friend over forpopcorn and a movie. “When I was young, my parents alwaysbooked the family in to see an ice show in early January andwe all looked forward to it,” recalls Barbara. “An afterChristmas event doesn’t have to be that elaborate.” She sug-gests choosing a favourite place to go to that you don’t visitoften — make this event a regular part of the holidays. Savinga few gifts to open at New Year’s Day also works well to easethe let- down.

So your job search got derailed, you gained a few extrapounds, and your dog is punishing you for the kennel stay.Allow yourself some extra leeway as you get back on track.Don’t expect to check off all the items on your to-do list in

the first week. Hit the treadmill once this week, rather thanevery day. It’s OK — Santa’s done watching.

Our self-image (the picture we have of who we really are)is strongly influenced by our self-talk. And that same impres-sionable self-image strongly influences our behaviour. Barba-ra explains it this way: “When we talk negatively aboutourselves, our situation, the mistakes we’ve made, how muchwe are not enjoying our life etc., we are painting a negativeimage of ourselves and will likely act in accordance with thatimage.”

“Recognizing the good in ourselves, our strengths and posi-tive values, will change our lives for the better,” she adds.“After all, there are no mistakes, only lessons. Learn, let goand look ahead.”

Instead of dwelling on all that didn’t go as planned, focusyour thoughts on what is good in your life. Consider thosewho have given you a helping hand, whether by sharing theirtime, money, or talent. What better moment to revive thelost art of writing thank-you notes? Throw a few professionalcontacts into the mix. Wish them a happy 2016, and you mayjust open the door to an informational interview or a net-working opportunity. After all, the good will and glad tidingsneed not be limited to the month of December.
