INTRODUCTIONKidscape at Yungaburra is a unique childcare centre that offers full time care for children between the ages of 15mths and 5years. It provides a safe and caring environment for children in the heart of the Yungaburra Village.

Being a limited vacancy centre, means each child, has the privilege of learning in a personal 20 place setting. We deliver a blended Montessori Program based on the Montessori Philosophy of ‘Nurturing the Uniqueness’ of each child. We believe that all children carry within themselves the person they will become, and that as teachers and parents we influence this becoming. At Kidscape we observe, guide and support each child, within the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF) of Belonging, Being, Becoming. We also implement the National Quality Framework (NQF)2011.

We believe in order to develop physically, intellectually, socially and emotionally to their own potential, the child must have freedom. Freedom to achieve through order, self-discipline and guidance.

Kidscape children gain a respect for the environment, its inhabitants and most importantly each other.

Kidscape, Yungaburra Childcare Centre is directed by Bernadette Doig and staffed by qualified, experienced and mature staff. Bernadette has worked in the childcare and education business for over 20 years. At Kidscape the director and staff look forward to meeting the individual needs and requirements of each child while discovering and supporting their unique characteristics.

“as soon as independence has been reached, the adult who keeps on helping the child becomes an obstacle” …… “the role of the adult is to respect what the child can do for himself ” Maria Montessori.

OUR PHILOSOPHY

Our philosophy: To nurture the uniqueness of each child while respecting their individual, cultural and family background. We do this through our positive interactions with children, families and each other. We show evidence of this through our educational Montessori Program and Prepared Environment.

We believe that all children carry within themselves the person they will become and that we as teachers and parents influence this becoming.

Our Montessori Philosophy, we belief that

The potential for each individual’s development should be respected and nurtured.

Education is an aid to life and a preparation for it.

A complete care and education program involves the integration of intellectual, emotional, spiritual, physical and social aspects of life.

There should be diversity of social groupings.

Learning occurs in a variety of ways and should be suited to each child’s individual needs.

Learning is largely active, often self-correcting, individually paced and unlimited in scope.

The teacher’s role is to guide, observe and support.

The Montessori environment “reaches” the child through curiosity, stability And freedom to chose.

Learning should be linked to home and to the outside world.

Balancing freedom and discipline results in a larger capacity for self direction.

Privacy: We must respect the parents and child privacy and therefore will not discuss private matters relating to one parent/child in front of another parent/child.

During your pregnancy it is particularly important to observe strict hygiene practices and lifting techniques to ensure that you are not putting yourself at risk.

ACCIDENT REPORT WRITING

Accidents or incidents need to be written up for each accident/incident which occurs while a child is in our care and attendance at the centre. The report has then to be signed by the staff member, the Director and then the parent. Reports are then filed in the office not in the child’s profile. Serious events which constitutes more than everyday accidents, including all substantial head bangs and insertion of foreign objects and obvious markings, will require a phone call to the parents, to advise them of the situation.

PROGRAMMINIG

As per childcare regulations, Group Leaders are required to program for each child’s individual needs as well as for their group. This is done by observing the children and keeping a variety of records, including progress records, anecdotal records, checklist samples of work and portfolios. These records are to be maintained by the Group Leader and must be kept in a file in a secure place and made available to parents on request. Children’s files are not to leave the centre under any circumstances. Please ensure programming is done one week in advance at all times as this allow continuity if you suddenly become ill or require time off. Resource books and equipment used for planning are not to be removed from the centre unless prior approval from the Director has been given. We are all teachers at ‘Kidscape’ and thus can contribute individual ideas and knowledge to planning and programming.

Programming goals are based on the child’s needs, promoting the development of the child in all areas, and at their own pace. The program and its goals must be displayed for parents to view. An evaluation of the program’s developmental areas and an individual reflection must be completed at the end of each week and given to the Director who will check your programming, observation and portfolios. The Director is there to give advice and guidance to you, to support your programming. Group Leaders are given non-contact time to cover programming and portfolios and to include other team members in this process. The is not part of the award, however every effort will be made to give you non-contact time during the week, where ever possible, but this will depend on staff numbers and child ratios.

Montessori Programming – what is it? Dr. Maria Montessori who is she?

Dr. Maria Montessori (1870-1952) scientist and physician was a woman before her time. She was the first female in Italy to become a qualified physician and worked endlessly to discover how children learn. Dr. Montessori studied the works of Froebel, Itard and Sequin and went on to create a scientific framework to observe the nature of children. She said ’I did not invent a method of education, I studied the child I have taken what the child has given me –and expressed it, and that is what is called the ‘Montessori Method. She discovered the importance of a positive and nurturing environment for all stages of development and stated the environment to be the teacher also.

A Montessori room is therefore set out to teach, with child friendly resources, scientifically designed for self correcting and set out on open shelving/bookcases for independent selection. Montessori teaches confidence, concentration and independence at an early age. For more information on Montessori you can visit: www.montessori.com www.homemontessori.com www.wa.montessori.edu.au www.mwei.org.au

Policy Statement:

We believe that the administration of medication to children at our centre is to be done with the utmost care and attention to the procedure. There must be prior written parental permission for staff to administer medication to a child at our centre. Our Medication Policy aims to ensure that parents use our ‘medication forms’ for this purpose that correct procedures are carried out for the safe administration of medication, and to give guidance and information about the use of medications.

We will

Communicate to parents the importance of obtaining written consent before any medication will be given.

Provide parents with information concerning medications and the use of medications through newsletters and information sheets.

Inform parents of any out of date medication and discard any meditation that may be left after a child has ceased at the centre.

Review the Medication Policy annually and discuss the policy at staff meetings.

Labels: All medication, whether it is prescribed, over the counter chemist or homeopathic products must have a chemist label on the original container. This label needs to include information such as the name of the medication, the child’s name, and the dosage and times required.

Administration of Medications: All medications will be checked and witnessed by two staff members, one of whom must be a ‘Group Leader’. Both staff members will sign the Medication Request Form, signifying that the correct dosage has been checked and given.

No medication will be administered without parental consent.

Storage: All Medication is to be stored in a specially marked medication box in the Medication Fridge located in the centre. Medication which needs to stay at room temperature can be placed in the allocated box on the top of the fridge.

Specialized medication for individual children, such as Epipens etc for emergency situations, will be kept in individual boxes with that child’s name and details on the box.

Role of Staff: Our staff is not medically trained and therefore cannot take samples of any description. Once a child is out of nappies we are unable to apply any creams or lotions to the child’s genital area. These measures are both to protect the child’s personal privacy and staff member liability. We are happy to discuss these matters further with you if required.

Cough & Cold Medications: These medications are not recommended for children under the age of 2 years without the advice from a Doctor or pharmacist. Should your child require these types of medication for more than two days, you may be asked to seek medical assessment from your Doctor.

Medicine Containers: Staff will not administer any medications which have been decanted and are not in the original bottle or container. Medications should never be placed in bottles, or drinks.

Medication must not be stored in your child’s bag or in kitchen food fridge.

The above procedures will take place each time you wish your child to have medication administered. Medication will not be given if the above procedures have not been correctly followed.
