For the first time the RL Turner boys soccer team

competed in an out of town tournament. They traveled to

Brenham, Texas to compete in the Brenham Select Cup

Tournament. This is one of the largest and best known soc-

cer tournaments in South Texas. The boys raised all of the

money to fund the trip themselves by selling candy and

    working concession stands.

Coach Marshall Huston had this to say about the

purpose of the trip, I wanted three things from this trip,

first, I wanted my boys to come together as a team. Next, I

wanted our team to improve. And finally I wanted the boys

to see that they can have fun and represent RL Turner with

class on and off the field. We hit a home run on all three!CONT. PG. 4

    LIONS HAVE RECORD-SETTINGJANUARY

The Lions are off to a fast start this season. This

group of boys have already achieved two firsts for the

Turner soccer program. First, the Lions started January

with 12 consecutive victories, which surpasses the previ-

ous record of nine set by the 2009 team. The biggest rea-

son for this has been Turners prolific scoring. The Lionsare averaging almost four goals per game.

Coach Marshall Huston said, I knew we could

score goals so I hoped our offense would carry us in the

first couple of games. But since the third game our de-

fense has stepped it up to where it is now a team effort.

The second record lies in tournament successes.

The Lions won the first two tournaments of the season

for the first time. This weekend they will be playing in

Little Elm with an opportunity to win their third tourna-

    ment in a row.

For three years Maria Harrison has been a devoted fan

of R.L. Turner boys soccer. She attends most games butmore important than supporting the boys on the field,

    she supports them off it.

Mrs. Harrison is the Bilingual ELS clerk at Turner.

She also works as a translator, helps with field trips,

parent meetings, PTSA, open houses and the new Com-

munity Room. She considers every Turner student hers,

and loves all of them. She encourages her students

quite a few of whom are on the soccer team academi-

cally. Evidence of their love for her line the walls of her

office. There are pictures, drawings and cards from

    them dating back several years.

In her job Mrs. Harrison focuses on the students thatimmigrate to the United States. While officially her job

is to make sure those students receive proper services,

she feels her main duty is to help them fine success in

life. She wants them to understand they are entering a

different culture and need to adapt to be successful. She

helps them set goals while warning them of some of the

obstacles that can get in their way.

She knows whereof she speaks. Born in San Luis,

Mexico, Mrs. Harrison has lived in America over three

decades. She successfully adapted to the American cul-

ture while maintaining her own cultural history. She

loves the blend of the two. Mrs. Harrison has beenmarried 30 years to Michael and theyve raised two

daughters: Tracey, a graduate of the University of

North Texas, is a first grade Bilingual Teacher. Saman-

tha, a graduate of Western Kentucky, is a manager at

the Four Seasons Resort and Club.

Mrs. Harrison never played soccer herself but has

always been a fan. She likes other sports but seems to

have adopted the boys soccer team. Or did they adopt

her? Isai Mireles said, She helps me pass my classes

and tells us to do the right things. She helps with fam-

ily stuff. Thats why Im in school still, because of

her. Many soccer memories have been made over the

years. The best ones are, When the kids invite me to

escort them on senior night, she says with a big smile.

The worst was, When we lost to Frisco [Centennial]

so close to the finals [in 2010]. She was on the field

crying with the boys after that loss.

Just when Mrs. Harrison thinks its time to retire, her

students thank her for helping them with school and

TAKS. And when she tears up with pride watching

them walk across the stage at graduation, we know

    shell be back in August.

ONCE AGAIN THE ANNUAL BLUE WHITESCRIMMAGE IS A BIG SUCCESS

Despite the cool temperatures, Lion soccer fans got a sneak peek at this years soccer teams. On Friday, Decem-

ber 10th the RL Turner boys soccer program hosted their annual blue/white scrimmage. Freshmen, JV and Varsityplayers were randomly mixed into blue and white squads.

We started this two years ago. The turnout was great and the feedback we received was so positive we decided

to make it an annual event, said Coach Marshall Huston.

Coach Huston has made promoting Turners soccer program a priority over the last couple of years. This scrim-

mage is another example of those efforts.

The game gave faculty, parents, administrators, and coaches a chance to mix and mingle in an informal setting

    Plus it was all free!!!

For the second consecutive year RL Turner hosted the CFBISD Invitational tournament, and for the second con-

secutive year RL Turner won the tournament. The tournament was played January 13th through 15th with eight

schools competing. Coach Marshall Huston was pleased with his teams championship but he knows his team must

get better to be solid competitors this season.

We won this tournament and I am proud of my kids but we have to remember the games that count don't start

until February. Our district opponents will be better than the teams we played in this tournament. A district cham-

pionship is what we want, said Huston.

Turner got wins against Arlington Bowie, Wylie East, and Mansfield Summit in group play. They faced Mes-

quite High School in the final Saturday afternoon.

Turner controlled the game and outshot Mesquite 12 to 3 but could not score on a very tough Mesquite defense. The game was finally de-

    cided in a shootout. Both

teams made 1 of their first 5

    shots, then in sudden death

    Mesquite missed their 9th

    kick giving Turner the op-

    portunity to win. Defender

    Cesar Martinez shot the ball

hard and low under the Mes-

quite keeper to win the game

    for the Lions.

What would a trip to Brenham, Texas be without visiting the Blue Bell Ice Cream Facility? Between

games at the Brenham Select Cup Tournament, the Lions toured the famous ice cream factory. It was

very interesting and the boys had a lot of fun. At the end of the tour they even got free ice cream! I am

not sure how much they ate, but I did notice Blue Bells stock dropped 2 points that day!!

If you have never been to Brenham, you should plan a trip. Most of the downtown area is restored

    houses from the 30s

    and 40s, with lots of

    antique shops, bed

    and breakfasts, and

    other points ofinterest. The Lions

    definitely plan to

    return next year to

    defend their

    championship. And

    get more ice cream.

    CONT. FROM PG. 1

To say the trip was successful would

be an understatement. The Lions dominated

their opponents outscoring them 23-2 in five

    matches.

Thursday, after a 5 1/2 hour bus ride,

Turner opened play against Austin Reagan

High School. It was cold and the wind was

gusting to around 30 mph but the Lions were

    able to defeat Reagan 5-0.

The Lions continued to roll with victo-

ries over Houston Scarborough (6-1), and Bas-

trop (5-0). In the 4A final they met a strong C.E. King team out of Houston. The Lions led a

hard fought first half only 1-0. The second halfwas different as Turner scored 3 more goals to

    win, going away 4-0.

This tournament is unusual in that they

have two separate tournaments. A 4A tourna-

ment for smaller 4A schools and a 5A tourna-

ment for large 5A schools. At the end of the

two tournaments the Champions play in a kind

of super final for the traveling Select Cup.

No team from North Texas has ever won it and

usually the 5A team defeats the 4A team.

Our opponent in the super final was

Langham Creek from Houston. The game was

well played by both teams. Langham Creek

took a 1-0 lead by scoring in the 5th minute.

Turner answered four minutes later when Luis

Martinez headed the ball past the Langham

keeper. In the 30th minute Turner took the lead

for good when Jacob Van Compernolle hit a

hard shot from 25 yards out, the goalkeeper

saved it but Isai Mireles was there to put the

rebound in. The score at halftime was 2-1. The

Lions dominated the second half only allowing

Langham 1 shot. In the 60th minute EdeherAyala added an insurance goal as the Lions

    held on to win 3-1.

In addition to winning the 4A bracket

and the Select Cup, the Lions brought home

    some individual hardware. Mireles was

awarded the Golden Boot as tournament high

scorer with 7 goals. He, along with Van-

    Compernolle, Juan Reballos, Jordan Garcia,

and Edeher Ayala were selected to the all tour-

    nament team.

[email protected] difference between a direct and indirect free kick in soccer is really quite simple.

A goal can be scored directly from a direct free kick.

A direct free kick is awarded to the opposing team if a player commits any of the following

seven offences in a manner considered by the referee to be careless, reckless or using excessive

    force:

kicks or attempts to kick an opponent

trips or attempts to trip an opponent

    jumps at an opponent

    charges an opponent

strikes or attempts to strike an opponent

    pushes an opponent

    tackles an opponent

A direct free kick is also awarded to the opposing team if a player commits any of the following

    three offences:

holds an opponent spits at an opponent

handles the ball deliberately (except for the goalkeeper within his own penalty area)

A direct free kick is taken from the place where the offence occurred

A goal can only be scored from an indirect free kick after at least 2 players from either or a

combination of both touch the ball.

If the ball goes into the goal directly from an indirect kick, a goal kick is awarded to the

    defending team.

An indirect free kick is awarded to the opposing team if a goalkeeper, inside his own penalty

area, commits any of the following four offences:

controls the ball with his hands for more than six seconds before releasing it from his

    possession

touches the ball again with his hands after he has released it from his possession and before it

has touched another player touches the ball with his hands after it has been deliberately kicked to him by a team-mate

touches the ball with his hands after he has received it directly from a throw-in taken by a

    teammate

An indirect free kick is also awarded to the opposing team if, in the opinion of the referee,

    a player:

    plays in a dangerous manner

impedes the progress of an opponent

prevents the goalkeeper from releasing the ball from his hands

commits any other offence, not previously mentioned in Law 12, for which play is stopped to

caution or send off a player

The indirect free kick is taken from the place where the offence occurred(see Law 13 Position of free)

Volume 1, Issue 3; A Kick in the Grass, RL Turner Boys Soccer Newsletter

such a large tournament could not exist.

For the second year RLT also hosted the C-FB ISD

Winter Invitational for varsity squads. There were 12 teams

that included a girls and a boys bracket. Both tournaments

were very well attended. There were 46 High Schools from all

over North Texas represented in these 2 tournaments.

    R. L. Turner hosted two soccer tournaments in Janu-

ary. For the 11th consecutive year RLT hosted the largest JV

tournament in Texas with 52 teams. The weather cooperated

and all matches were played. In addition to using every avail-

able district facility, the city of Farmers Branch graciously al-

lowed RLT to use the three fields at Cox park, without which
