Jesus said to his disciples: “Be sure of this: if the master of the house had known the hour when the thief was coming, he would not have let his house be broken into. You also must be prepared, for at an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come.” As if this wasn’t enough of a challenge, Jesus concludes, “Much will be required of the person entrusted with much, and still more will be demanded of the person entrusted with more.”

I recall a meeting with Father Bob Spitzer, then President of Gonzaga University, at a retreat. “Michael,” he stated with a directness I was unprepared for, “I will pray for you each day. Your work as a leader of a Catholic high school is far more important than it is with me. You are entrusted with the still-undecided souls. Not only are you expected to prepare them for college and beyond, you are mandated by the very nature of the name of your school; to further the Catholic/Christian faith in and out of the classroom.” Needless to say, this was an intimidating challenge and expectation.

This year, in an effort to strengthen our resolve to purport the faith, a sub-committee of the Advisory board was formed to advise, direct, create, pray for and pray over those commissioned to deliver on the Catholic identity (Spiritual Direction) of Kennedy Catholic High School as an apostolate for Christ in South Seattle and the Greater Seattle area. The intent is to elevate parents as partners in formation while at the same time furthering their own formation. We envision this committee engaging with existing campus ministry offerings and supporting those initiatives in thought, word, action and deed. In addition, evangelizing our mission in the greater community.

Our Catholic identity should be something that sets us apart in holiness. Our ability to evangelize comes from an encounter that causes us to be curious, courageous, and provoked to the point of being transformed in Christ. Committee members include representation from John Knox, Church by the Side of the Road, St. Francis, St. Anthony, St. Vincent de Paul, and Lake Burien Presbyterian. It is a mixture of pastors, youth ministers and key stakeholders in both parish work and involvement in the mission of Kennedy Catholic.

The falling leaves and temperature remind us of the year’s progress. As the seasons change, we begin to anticipate the holiday season that will soon be upon us. We have been actively working on new initiatives for the school and are pleased to announce a few of them.

We are excited to announce a new Sound and Engineering Club. More than 14 students have joined the club. The club is being moderated by Jerome Palmeri with assistance from Steele Frederickson. The students will learn the technical setups needed to support Masses, assemblies and sporting events. Pisey Kim is a mentor and lead sound engineer. He works with students and staff to facilitate event scheduling and staffing.

The Robotics Club is in the works and the first meeting will take place in November. The club will be moderated by Steele Frederickson. The concept is to pilot the club this year, then continue to expand and grow next year.

We have contracted with Forefront, a group working through UW, to participate in their comprehensive school suicide prevention project. There are 16 schools in the cohort. Our initial team, consisting of administrators, counselors, classroom teachers and a parent, attended training at the end of September. This is a 3-year program. In the first year the focus will be on postventionand reviewing our current crisis response framework. We willprovide professional development to our faculty and staff andtraining for our parents. The following two years will focus onprevention. As the program grows, we will add students andadditional community members to our team.

Please pray for our students and staff as we begin our retreat season. Fall SEARCH was on October 26-28. Sophomore Girls and Boys Solidarity Retreats are November 6 and November 20.

Have a happy and safe Thanksgiving!

Never Stop SearchingOn October 26 - 28, fifty-one juniors and seniors participated in Fall Search for the first time. Search is a retreat and so much more. It is a tradition that spans over thirty years and is truly the heart of Kennedy Catholic. Searchers were treated to talks by Search Team members. They laughed, cried, and prayed together. It was a wonderful and moving experience for all involved. We look forward to the Winter Search, scheduled for November 30 - December 2. Be yourself. Love deeply. Grow in faith. Never stop Searching!

Kennedy Catholic and BeyondIn October, a group of Kennedy Catholic international students visited Seattle University’s campus. They were

greeted by Kennedy Catholic alums who shared personal reflections about Seattle University and the high school to college transition. Michael Lee ‘16 spoke to students about the admissions process, some basics about core class education and being an international student in college. Nils Gollersrud ‘15 joined the group to speak about academic readiness. This same group of students also attended a college fair at Highline College and were able to speak to representatives from 90+ universities. They learned more about the variety of college choices around the nation. Kennedy Catholic international student graduates have gone on to study at a wide-array of colleges and universities around the world.

It’s a pleasure to introduce our current international students to the wide world of university choices.

JFK Remembered - The LibraryAs we approach the 54th anniversary of the assassination of JFK on November 22, we invite everyone to visit our impressive collection of Kennedy archives housed in a special collection room in our newly remodeled library. The Kennedy Room includes endless photographs, newspapers, magazines, letters and so much more from JFK’s campaign, presidency and his untimely death. Since the inception of the school

in 1968, we have received donations of original artifacts featuring Kennedy and his family. Many of these items are extremely rare and some are one of a kind. Prior to the complete renovation of the library, most of these items had to be store and out of view to ensure their protection.

The library remodel allowed us to devote a small room to securely display

the collection and provide access to cataloged materials about JFK for those doing research. Our library is open weekdays from 7:15am-6:00pm. Please stop by this month and visit this impressive collection first hand!

Alumni Profile: Julie Pilat ‘95Music has always been more than a hobby for Julie Pilat ’95. It has shaped her life, inspiring her in school and in her career. It would be easy to trace her life story around music, starting by learning everything she could at her first radio station job, serving as the DJ for school dances, registering to vote at a Foo Fighters concert, running a radio station in her twenties, and leading the way into streaming channels.

Tracing her story back to her time at Kennedy Catholic, she was focused on her passion for music, and was inspired by the teachers and students that make the Kennedy Catholic family what it is. Thanks to the support of Father Batterberry, she acted as the designated school DJ for all of the dances. He believed in her and

supported her, much like Mr. McCluskey. To this day, she can still recite the definition of morality, which was a question on every one of his tests. “Morality is that which is used to distinguish right from wrong in human behavior and relationships.” Mr. McCluskey passed away shortly after she graduated. In the winter of 1996, Julie came back to Kennedy Catholic to honor his memory as the DJ for the fundraiser in support of the McCluskey family.

After graduation, she continued working for local radio stations while attending the University of Washington and Arizona State University. Julie’s goal for her career was to one day be the Music Director at KIIS FM – a goal she accomplished when she was just 25. Julie was always one step ahead of the curve. After she became the

music director, she had no idea what her next step would be. She remembers thinking that her job hadn’t been created yet, and she was right. Social media and streaming completely changed the business, and allowed for music to be on demand anywhere, anytime.

About five years ago, an opportunity emerged, and Julie was offered the job of Head of Music at Beats when Jimmy Iovine launched Beats Music. The following year, Beats Music was bought by Apple, and now she’s programming a worldwide radio station, Beats 1, on Apple Music. This position is allowing her to travel the world, building relationships and programming music for a global audience. It’s fostering her love of all kinds of music, and giving her new challenges. During this same time, Julie has seen some of her greatest personal and professional accomplishments, including having a cameo in The Defiant Ones on HBO, and being included on Billboard’s 40 Under 40 list. Always ready for the next big thing, Julie can’t wait to see what will be next for her.

Interview with Father Frank Schuster ‘90Kennedy Catholic was thrilled to welcome back Fr. Frank Schuster ’90 to perform the All Saints Day mass on November 1. He is son of former Kennedy Catholic principal of 20 years, Mr. Jack Schuster, and now a priest at Saint Theresa of Calcutta parish in Woodinville, WA. After performing mass, we were able to interview Fr. Schuster ’90 on his favorite memories from high school and his most remarkable experiences as a priest.

What is a favorite memory from your time at Kennedy Catholic? The summer before my freshman year, I was welcomed into the Kennedy Catholic marching band. It was a wonderful opportunity to get to know other students and be welcomed into the student body. I came from a public junior high, so I didn’t know a lot of people coming into the school. The opportunity to be a part of the marching band was an excellent way to make friends and transition into the new world at Kennedy Catholic.

How did your experience at Kennedy Catholic help you in your current endeavors as a priest? My time at Kennedy Catholic was very positive. The relationships and focus on our faith [was crucial]. I [loved that it was] a place where I could sneak into the chapel to pray in between classes if I needed to – and I did! The general spirit of the school that celebrates catholic identity was helpful for my life. My teachers were a great witness to the faith as well – I grew close to many during my time at Kennedy Catholic.

What has been your most memorable experience as a priest? When I was a seminarian, I [took a trip to] the Vatican with many seminarian brothers. We were invited to [attend] daily mass in Pope John Paul II’s private chapel, and it was very moving to meet him. What was most magnificent about [the Pope] was that when he came out and greeted us, he gave us all rosaries. This was his way of showing us that the reason we were in seminary was to grow closer to Jesus; the focus of our vocations was to serve the Lord. He explained that the best way to do so is to model our life after our Blessed Mother. I thought that was a powerful symbol and very effective – I still have that rosary to this day!

What is the most enjoyable part of your job now? I am here to serve people in their spiritual journeys, and I truly enjoy it. I get to be present at people’s baptisms, by hospital beds, at funerals, and at mass every day. Accompanying people in their joys, but also their sorrows is a truly remarkable privilege. Every day is a completely different adventure, and every day God has something in store that I didn’t know was on the menu.

Chapin Named Head Gymnastics CoachKennedy Catholic High School is excited to announce Erin Chapin as the head coach of our gymnastics program. Erin is taking over the program from longtime head coach Kim Katzenberger who closed her career as a Lancer following the end of the 2016-2017 season. Erin comes to Kennedy Catholic with almost twenty years of gymnastics experience, first as a youth club gymnast, then as a successful high school competitor, and most recently as a middle school coach. This will be her first head coaching position at the high school level. A graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School in Federal Way, Erin was a 4-year member of her gymnastics team while also competing in dance & drill. In the years following, she remained connected to the gymnastics world while starting her professional career. She works today as a Radiology Technologist for Seattle Children’s Hospital. “Through the interview process, Erin showed herself to be charismatic, knowledgeable, well-connected, and most importantly passionate about the opportunity to coach high school gymnastics,” shared Sam Reed, Athletic Director. “She was able to clearly

articulate the benefits of competing as part of a high school program, and I look forward to her building that culture with our current group of Lancers.” The season begins Monday, November 6.

Lancer Fall Sports Bring In Multiple Team and Individual ChampionshipsWhile fall sports aren’t quite finished yet, many of our programs have already reached milestones in either league or district-level competition. Here are just a few of our highest successes from this season: Girls Soccer: The Lancers finished the regular season with an undefeated league record of 12-0-2 to claim the NPSL Cascade Division championship. Alyssa N., Girls Golf: The junior shot a two-round 142 (even par) to win the NPSL Medalist Tournament at Gold Mountain. Shayla M., Girls Swim: Just a sophomore, Shayla won two events in the league championships and was named West Central District champion in the 100 fly.

Dino’s Last Year Coaching Softball After 25 YearsFor the better part of Kennedy Catholic’s history, first as a student-athlete then as a teacher and coach, Dino Josie has been roaming sidelines and baselines, sharing instruction and helping to shape and lead hundreds of past and current Lancers. With a coaching career that started by coaching junior varsity tennis – yes, tennis – an included two decades as an assistant football coach, Coach Josie is best known today as the long-time and ultra-successful head coach of our girls fastpitch program. For the past twenty four years, he’s grown and developed a program to be an icon on campus, transitioning the sport from slow pitch to today’s fastpitch, winning back-to-

back WIAA State Championships, and bettering the lives of hundreds of student-athletes. Now, as we head into the 2018 season, Coach Josie has announced that year twenty five will be his final season on the top step of the dugout. And while he plans to remain on campus in his role as a trusted math teacher, his decision to hang up the spikes is an occasion deserving of attention all on it’s own. To get the celebration started, we sat down with Coach for an interview and chance to reflect back on his time on the diamond. Read Dino’s full interview on the following page.

Dino’s Last Year Coaching Softball After 25 Years (Continued)You’ve seen a lot of success in your time leading the Lancer fastpitch program. What are some of your most memorable achievements? Strictly looking at the scoreboard, the achievements of the program are highlighted by the State Championships in 2007 & 2008 and winning 11 consecutive league championships. To coach for as long as you have, it can’t be just about the wins and losses. What will you miss most when that final out is ultimately recorded? The building of relationships with players that will last a lifetime is what I will miss the most. Helping young people accomplish something as a group that they could never do as an individual, and seeing that a job well done is sometimes a reward in itself, regardless of winning or losing. It is the life lesson that players will use in every aspect of the life after they leave the program. It’s what has made me want to be a better teacher, a better coach, and a better man everyday throughout my career. Your classroom walls are filled with team pictures from past years, many who come back to visit to this day. Who are some of your past student-athletes that you are most proud to have coached (and yes, this is a bit like being asked to choose your favorite child)? All of my players have left an imprint on me, to be sure, and I cherish the relationships I have with all of them. I always look forward to the times that we can get together and catch up or reminisce. They all give me a sense of pride but to name a few that have stood out over the years I would have to say: Allison McDowell, Michelle Grosskopf, Ashley & Halle Davis, Taylor & Kelsey Trautmann, Jordan Eckman, Sierra Bains, Karli Merlich, Maggie Gallagher, Samantha Isernio, Chelsea McNeil, Nicole Miller, Anna Tremper, Dew Spadoni, Maggie Whaley, Peggy Mathison, Jordan Cossette, Amada Clark, Brittany Montgomery just to name a few. Also some of the most memorable assistant coaches I have had the pleasure to work with over the years with a wealth of talent, knowledge, and experience are Mike Trautmann, Jim Perkins, Nick Freeman, Laura Jeffers, Taylor Trautmann and now Frank Scandiffio. I am honored to have worked with and to have coached all of them and many more. You are a Lancer through and through. What makes this community what it is today? We are a family, we are loyal, we fight for each other, we are always present for each other, especially in a time of need. We love each other, we laugh together, we cry together, and we celebrate together the accomplishments of every Lancer with God as a presence in all we do. Thank you Coach Josie. This spring will mark Dino’s 25th year as our fastpitch coach, and we as Lancer Nation look forward to celebrating with him all spring long. Stay tuned for more information on details surrounding his retirement for coaching and how you can come out to support.
