Introduction

• Castles only began to be built in England after the Norman Conquest The Normans built many to secure areas where they faced resistance, but they also built castles as a show of strength. The first castles were made of earth and wood, and could be built extremely quickly.

William’s castles• Motte and bailey castles appeared in England after

the Norman Conquest of 1066. Motte and bailey castles were a common feature in England by the death of William the conqueror in 1087. Their construction was the start of what was to become a massive castle building programme in England and Wales.

• When William landed at pevensy in 1066, he immediately set about building a castle to protect himself and his most important men. William was a highly skilled and feared soldier who had learned his military skills in northern France. The Normans achieved great fame for their castle building. Why was this so?

Attacking and Defending Castles

• Fire was the best way to attack the early Motte and Bailey castles since they were made entirely of wood. The thick stone walls of the Stone Keep castles were difficult for men to knock down.

• Ladders were used by those attacking a castle to climb over the walls and fight the castle inhabitants within the castle walls

How and why did castles change?

• Castles changed because after castles began being built in England and many parts of Europe, timber and earth were often employed for their construction. The materiel was cheaper and after the XII century, many nobles sought to strengthen their castles to be effective against fire. Some fortresses had towers soaring a hundred feet high.

An example of a medieval castle• Bodiam Castle is a perfect example of a late medieval

moated castle.• Because it is One of the most famous and evocative

castles in Britain, Bodiam was built in 1385, as both a defence and a comfortable home. The exterior is virtually complete and the ramparts rise dramatically above the moat. Enough of the interior survives to give an impression of castle life.There are spiral staircasesand battlements to explore and wonderful views of the Rother Valley from thetop of the towers.
