W. A. Billingsley Memorial Library (Jackson County Public Library)

The Jackson County Public located in Newport, Arkansas was the site of my program observation. It serves over 10,000 patrons and offers programs for children, teens, and adults throughout the year. During my observation, I viewed a children’s reading program.

Welcomes and Library Rules

Ms. Wallace, the librarian, welcomes the children as they enter the library.

She then explains the importance of listening and being quiet while inside the library.

As the preschoolers filed into the library they were given a card with a letter on it. The children were asked to stand on the letter on the rug that corresponded to the letter on their card.

Once everyone found their spot on the rug they sang the alphabet song.

The Theme : Apples

Ms. Wallace read two Dr. Seuss books, Hop on Pop & Ten Apples up on Top.

She discussed the letter “A” with the children, how apples started with the letter “A”, and about the text-to-text connection between the two books.

On to the next activity…

As the children followed Ms. Wallace, balancing an apple on her head, they pretended they were trying to balance an apple on their heads as well.
