STAR

OPINION It was fitting that former STAR editor’s John Foster funeral at St Barnabas Church in Ranskill should close with the song New York, New York. The choice of the Frank Sinatra classic was particularly apt in two ways. John, who died at the end of June after a short battle with leukaemia, was a lifelong fan of Rotherham United, whose new stadium was named the New York Stadium when it opened in 2012 after the historic name of the area of the town in which it was built. But perhaps, even more aptly, the song opens with the line “Start spreading the news.” As you will discover inside this month’s edition, John worked as a journalist for more than 40 years until his retirement in 2001, and then devoted much of his time to working on ensuring The STAR came out each month, as it has done since 1984. As his widow Chris put it: “I think he put as much into editing The STAR as he did into the Advertiser.” John’s death has left a big hole to fill in The STAR team. Having lived in Ranskill for more than 30 years, and been a parish councillor and part of the Scarecrow Festival committee, John had his finger on the pulse of what is happening in our villages. Reading this, you may think that there’s plenty happening in the three villages that readers should be aware of and you may consider the things that do get covered are just not that interesting. Unfortunately, there’s only so much time that a dad of three with a full-time job can spend sniffing out the latest local news. Also, The STAR can never be at the cutting edge of the news agenda. After all, it is a parish magazine and the people who help out are purely volunteers. So, in a nutshell, if you think you have a community issue or event that you would like to see in The STAR, then you need to let us know. Just drop us an email at [email protected] and we’ll try and include it in the next edition. But stories are not the only thing that The STAR needs to keep going each month. It might surprise you to know that it’s not particularly cheap to produce a free parish magazine. The committee is grateful for the financial contributions it receives from the parish councils each year, but declining advertising and the ever increasing price of paper means that some months The STAR is operating at a loss. This is something that is not sustainable over the long term, so if any local company has ever considered advertising or would be able to donate some paper, then now is the time to get in touch. It would mean a lot to John to know that The STAR’s future is in safe hands for another 34 years.

No. 409 August 2019

Dear Readers,We have been blessed with more incoming news for some past events and some upcoming ones.We have received some wonderful pictures this issue so keep turning the pages to find them all. Don’t forget that these are in full colour on our website http://www.the-star.org.ukOf particular note we have an update of the Torworth Neighbourhood Plan on p21 and, for those concerned regarding the speed of traffic in Ranskill, there is an appeal for volunteers to take part in a Speed Watch Initiative on p19.The reporting during the summer months can be a little more sporadic as families take time out for an annual holiday. Schools have broken up and the Scarecrow Festival is over for another year.Don’t let this stop you from giving info of anything that you would like to air views of, or any charitable events which are taking place. We love to hear of them.We note that there are some communications regarding fly tipping (again) in Ranskill, which we believe the Council are aware of and taking action. Also of an etiquette debate regarding loud music being played in back gardens into the evenings on our warmer days. We will report on these if there is more information to come.Have a safe and happy summer and we look forward to welcoming you again for the September issue.Deadline: 16th of each monthEmail: [email protected]

Ranskill Bowls Club Know How to Put on a Show! And do they know how to provide a feast!

You can see by the photographs how much this event was enjoyed, and how much it meant to the membership to support MNDA - Motor Neurone Disease Association.

The Ranskill Bowls Club would like to thank everyone who supported the event with contributions, or by just being present on the day.

The Motor Neurone Disease Association funds and promotes global research into MND and provides

support to people in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. These enthusiastic and dedicated members of the Bowls Club raised more than £600 for the Association in July and provided much enthusiasm, love, baking and fundraising for this charity which is very close to their hearts.

The splendid array of food, the raffle and the opportunity to take a turn on the green (weather allowing) was a bonus.

See page 17 for contact details and progress of the summer season.

Brownies and Rainbows made a Wizard display . . .

. . . and won the Scarecrow Competition in Ranskill. Thanks to Penny Warren for help with the outfits for the Wizard of Oz.In early July the Brownies launched the Scrooby Church Trail with Dukeries Arts Society. This is a quiz based round Scrooby Church and will hope to encourage others to do so alongside with the 400 Pilgrim Celebrations next year. The girls really enjoyed the trail and were presented with certificates at the end from the Dukeries Arts Society. They then entertained guests at the Village Hall with refreshments and sang them a couple of songs. We finished the term with a picnic at Idle Valley Nature Reserve when they made clay adventurers, built dens and got wet.Ranskill Rainbows finished the summer term with a Teddy Adventure at Idle Valley Nature Reserve. They enjoyed their picnic, made a decorated clay teddy and build a den for their teddies. At the end Harriet and Milly were presented with their Pot Of Gold badge and card.Well done to Seryn, Rosie and Elsie who got their Nature Badge and Katie her Agility Badge.Thank you to all our helpers at Brownies and Rainbows who help to make our meetings fun, safe and help to develop the girls.Happy Summer break to all and meetings start again week beginning 9th September.Janet Symonds

What is ‘buzzing’ in our VillagesHere at the STAR, we receive a deal of incoming news, and we also like to keep our ear to the ground regarding what is happening locally. This includes topics of concern and praise. We hope we pick up on these adequately and please keep news coming in to us.

As ever, we need to draw your attention to our disclaimer on page 3. In general terms, these are the views and expressions of our readers and do not necessarily reflect the views of the Editorial Panel.

Jogging Group in RanskillThe Scrooby, Chesterfield, Ranskill and

Mattersey Hash House Harriers started at the back end of last year and the next run is planned for Sunday 23rd of July. Meet at 11:50 at the White Swan in Blythe.

The planned route will be 4-5km of mixed, mainly off road and is set for joggers, runners and walkers alike. Dogs are welcome too. The whole idea is that everyone gets some good exercise and the aim is for everyone to get back to the pub at the same time – for a drink or three and maybe some food, if one requires. The route is set from junction to junction and the idea is that everyone waits at each check for the last person to catch up. The front runners are then away trying to find the next leg of the route (false trails and dead ends are marked up too), and when identified, and after a quick natter, the remainder join on the correct route. It is not competitive!

Hashing, for the uninitiated, is an international phenomenon started by the Brits after WW2. A hash run is a sociable 3-5 mile, no-competitive, run / walk / jog, which generally starts and finishes at a pub (but not always).

A hash run is set by a volunteer (or two) who choose a pub then mark a circular running route using blobs of flour. The ‘pack’ rendezvous at

the assigned time / location then set off with the aim of finding the route out and back to the pub. A good hash route will have a long route with false routes for fast runners, a shorter route for the slower ones and possibly even walkers’ short cuts. Various check points along the route keep everyone together and the general idea is to all arrive back at the pub at the same time. Then have a drink or two and possibly a meal depending on one’s choice.

We generally run monthly on a Sunday lunchtime but, if a member wants to set a run say mid-week, then anything is possible. There is no membership or fees although we general ask for a £1 or two ‘hash cash’ from everyone to cover the cost of drinks dished out as rewards or misdemeanours on the run. The general rule is that there are no rules! No one has to wear anything fancy, just normal running gear although in the winter, it may be raining or the trail may be muddy, so a change of clothes and footwear for in the pub is recommended

Christian Perspective

How are you at finishing what you start? If you’re anything like me you’ll find it easier to start a thing than to finish it. I can get quite fired up with enthusiasm for a project, a hobby, different things, but then find the interest wanes as time passes. What can look fun and exciting at the beginning can soon become hard work and we can become distracted by other things.

Living the Christian life is not something we enter into for a little while when it seems interesting; we need to ready ourselves for the long haul. It’s more like running a marathon than a short sprint. It’s not some-thing we enter into for a short season, but a life of dedication to serving Jesus. The writer to the Hebrews speaks of the Christian life as running a race and there are things that we must throw off if we want to run it successfully—See Hebrews 12:1-3. He says we need to ‘throw off everything that hinders’. If we try and run a race in long baggy trousers, they might well get tangled round our legs! This is like the ‘sin that so easily entan-gles’. There are things that can make our Christian lives difficult that we need to put aside. This can include relationships, habits, what we watch on TV and so on—those things that can distract us from the purpose of following Jesus.

Hebrews 12 goes on ‘And let us run with perse-verance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sin-ners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart’. Hebrews 12:1-3. Spending time with Jesus, reading the Bible, taking time to pray, inviting the Holy Spirit to bring the realities of heaven into our lives, are all wise ways to run this ‘race’ well.

We need to do our part, but God also does his part. One of the most encouraging verses in the Bible to my mind is Philippians 1:6, where we read: ‘being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus’. If you have invited Jesus to come into your life to be your Lord and Saviour, it’s a spiritual transaction, and the only way you can live it out is by the power and presence of the Holy Spirit. God has begun the work and he will bring it to a great conclu-sion. If you have become weary in running this race look again to Je-sus, invite the Holy Spirit to refresh you in persevering in your faith to run strong to the end.

Puzzle for August 2019

Sudoku is a number placement puzzle. The aim of Sudoku is to complete the grid by entering numbers from 1 to 9 in each empty cell of the 9×9 grid which comprises 9 sub-grids each with 9 cells in a 3×3 pattern. Each row, column and sub-grid must contain only one instance of each number.

There are variants of Sudoku. In this puzzle there are 4 groups of shaded cells. Each of these shaded cells must also contain the num-bers 1 to 9. The solution is included elsewhere in the STAR.

Garden Bird of the Month

The Sparrowhawk is a bird that divides opinions. Some people

blame the Sparrowhawk for the decline of our garden birds but the experts say that such suggestions are

not supported by available scientific evidence. It may be distressing to see a bird of prey swoop down to a bird feeder and clutch a Blue Tit in its talons but we have to accept this is nature and despite the fact that Sparrowhawks are not always welcome in gardens by everyone, their presence is actually a sign that we have a rather healthy bird population. The male Sparrowhawk is a handsome bird and has slate-grey upper parts and barred rufous underparts. The female has brownish-grey upper parts with lighter rufous barring on the underparts. The wings of both are short, broad and rounded and they

have a long, square-ended tail. The female of the species is about 25% larger than the male and she is able to take a wood pigeon. However, the male being smaller, will only catch prey up to the size of a thrush. The Sparrowhawk, uses the element of surprise to hunt

its prey. It will perch on the branch of a tree, well hidden from feeding birds, and watch intently from a distance. Once it has chosen its target, it will fly towards it and grasp its victim with its sharp talons. The Sparrowhawk is very adept at chasing smaller birds and will dive over hedges and twist and turn very efficiently and sometimes recklessly. This can often lead to them crashing in to windows and other obstructions because of the determination to catch their prey. If you find the birds at your feeding station are often a target of Sparrowhawks, then it is best to move the feeders or table to a safer part of the garden, preferably near to a tree or bush so that they can dive for cover.Photo: Jean Powley Jean is a voluntary Ambassador for the British Trust for Ornithology’s (BTO) Garden BirdWatch scheme in Nottinghamshire. July has been fun yet emotional month in nursery.

We have had a pirate and princess day, where we dressed up for the day and went on a treasure hunt.

We have had a visit from Coach Tom from Kixx Bassetlaw to do some football training. Also, we had a magic party for our last day of term.

We have been emotional because we have had to say goodbye to our leavers. We wish them all well and every success for their next big step moving on up to school.

Six hit: Ranskill Primary School youngsters show what they think of watching the Cricket World Cup at Headingley

Ready to read: Some of the children whose families have sponsored a book

Treading the boards: The Ranskill choir got to perform as the chorus in ‘Joseph’ at the Majestic and even got a mention in a review by the National Operatic and Dramatic Association’s Andrew Key . He said: ‘The children from the Ranskill Primary and Carr Hill Primary Schools added so much through the entire show – well done to you all’

Youngsters hit for six by World Cup cricket

CHILDREN from Ranskill Pri-mary School got a taste of the ICC Cricket World Cup after watching a match at Headingley.

They got to see West Indies play Afghanistan, as 2,000 free tickets were sent out to schools.

Deputy head Joanne Thros-sell said: “Everyone who at-tended the Cricket World Cup game had a fab day. Some chil-dren went on a train for the

first time and for most it was their first experience of live cricket.”

Ranskill Primary school is asking parents and friends to ‘sponsor’ a book for the school-library. There is a wish-list on Amazon of books the school would like.

Ranskill Parish Council Newsletter (inc Draft Minutes of the Meeting held on 9th July 2019)

OLD GLASS BULBS SITE – COMMON LANE As noted in the last month’s Parish Council newsletter this site was the subject of a planning application 19/00534/FUL to build nine dwellings on the site. The Parish Council strongly objected to the proposals as did a number of other agencies and departments consulted. The application has subsequently been refused by Bassetlaw District Council. The District Council are still working to see if there are grounds to proceed with a prosecution over removal of the hedge.

RANSKILL PARK - PLAYGROUND As many residents will be aware an accident with the roundabout in the Park left a young resident with a badly broken leg. As soon as the Parish Council were made aware of the incident the roundabout was taped off and an additional professional opinion sought on the safety of the equipment, in addition to the annual and monthly checks already routinely carried out. Although the roundabout passed the necessary safety checks set out by RoSPA, in view of the seriousness of the incident the Parish Council have decided to have the equipment removed. Councillors are currently researching replacements. In better news, the Parish Council were successful in their bid for funding for a play ship for the Park. Half of the funding will be provided by the Parish Council and the other half by a grant from Nottinghamshire County Council. The plan is for the ship to installed in September and it is expected that the work will take about a week. Because of the size of the ship some smaller equipment will need to be relocated within the park at the same time. The Parish Council apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused and ask that residents bear with us during this time.

CRIME and POLICING PSCO Lucy Campion reported that there had been one theft, one instance of criminal damage, two ASB incidents, plus three reports of suspicious behaviour in the village in the four weeks preceeding the Parish Council meeting.

HIGHWAYS and TRAFFIC The volunteers of the Community Road Safety/Speedwatch team are looking for more residents to help them in their work to deter speeding through the village and at the same time collect statistics in order to build a case for police action and highway safety improvements. Please contact the Clerk if you can help.

FINANCE Bank balances at 30th June 2019: current account £100, reserve account £71,039.20 (includes restricted CIL and Neighbourhood Plan funds). The following payments were approved:

Payee Details Amount St Barnabus Church Room Hire inc Speedwatch Grp (Jan) - Jan to June £112.00 J McGill Litter picking £30.00 Information Commissioner Data Protection Registration renewal £40.00 C M Malcolm Clerks salary and expenses - July £468.55 HMRC PAYE July £2.60 C M Malcolm Office Expenses - Mar - June 2019 £67.16 EKM Ltd Roundabout Inspection £120.00

Councillors reviewed the quarterly accounts against budget. There were no items of concern.

PLANNING The Parish Council considered an application for the erection of a conservatory at 9 Stonehill Close. Councillors had no objections to the proposals. Bassetlaw District Council had granted permission for work to crown lift four trees at 2 Spinney Mead and for a householder permitted development application for a single storey extension at Cherry Tree Close.

NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN The Steering Group are making good progress with the plan. The Parish Council was successful in its application for grants to fund the cost of a consultant to produce the plan, and for professional assessment of the suitability of sites for possible new housing. This means that work on this area of the plan can move forward and on 23rd July a company appointed by central government – AECOM - are due to visit ten possible development sites put forward by landowners as part of the required “call for sites” process. These sites will be assessed by AECOM based on set criteria and given a traffic light rating as to their suitability for development. The site visit forms just one part of this assessment process. Once AECOM’s work is complete a public consultation will be held. It is expected that this will take place in September. Please look out for details.

RANSKILL PARISH COUNCIL MEETING The next Parish Council Meeting will be held at St Barnabas Church on Tuesday 10th September at 7:30pm

Members of the public and press are welcome to attend. Parish Clerk: Mel Malcolm 07584 169028 or [email protected]

11. Village Hall Extension / Toilets - Notts CC LIS funding decision was only for £10,000 not the £20,000 requested, disappointing. We are still awaiting the formal notification and next steps. It was heartening to see so many tokens in the competition at Tesco Gainsborough, that should win Scrooby a small amount to help with the refitting of the extended Village Hall.

12. Village Environment Fly tipping again on Mill Lane, needs some bagging up to be done at the weekend. Hedge to the left of Station Road is overgrown and spoils the view across the Manor Foundations. Tony Smith to discuss with landowner and Notts CC.

13. Pilgrim Fathers Visitors Centre and Mayflower 400 The Pilgrim Roots project continues with progress on the Apple Tree, but we need to trace the owner of the targeted land. The Parish Council meeting requested by the Notts CC leadership was held on 26th June and a number of items and Notts CC involvement were discussed including a possible memorial to the Pilgrim Fathers of 1620. It was agreed to follow this initiative through. Ed Marshall presented a list of 20+ items and initiatives under discussion and these were reviewed. It was agreed to form a sub-committee under Ed’s leadership to work on them all (including funding sources) and report back as required. That may mean a special Parish Council meeting during the summer break. Agreed that Scrooby be asked for their thoughts and ideas in a more positive way. “Pictorial” Scrooby Road Signs – a sub-committee to be created to agree the design, etc., now we have the formal offer of LIS funds.
