Dear Friends,

Even though I witness the benefits of equine therapy on a daily basis, I am continually amazed and impressed by what we see here at Fieldstone Farm.

An incredible example is when 11-year old Sarah arrived for our bereavement camp the day following the loss of her mother to cancer. She was paired with one of our very long-time four-hooved heroes, Apache. This little girl was completely taken with him and his markings in which she saw the shape of Mickey Mouse on his side.

When the social worker asked the students to gently put their hands on their horses and focus on transferring their grief to the horse, Sarah touched Apache’s neck and you could visibly see her relax. A moment later, Apache’s knees started to quiver and almost buckle as though he was going to lay down. It was as if he was taking away Sarah’s pain. She began to weep and then pulled herself together and said, “I’m done.” She lifted her head and continued, “I am okay now.” Tears welled in the eyes of all who were watching. Sarah gave her grief to Apache and his heart was big enough to carry her burden and help her to heal.

New research from Washington State University reveals how youth who work with horses experience a substantial reduction in stress. While research is wonderful to substantiate the incredible benefits of being around horses, seeing it in person is what really tells the story.

We extend our deepest thanks to each one of you for being a part of our continued “Little Victories!”

Sincerely,

Lynnette StuartChief Executive Officer

Our horses have been transforming lives for nearly 40 years

For many, coming to Fieldstone Farm is the highlight of their week. They walk in and find a peaceful and accepting place where they can leave their stresses at the door. It is all about being present in the moment and overcoming obstacles, celebrating accomplishments, and relishing the connections formed with four-legged friends.

Our horses help people with a variety of physical and emotional challenges. Riding helps build strength to sit-up, walk, run or jump. The experience with horses can also help people find courage to overcome an anxiety or deep sadness that has been holding them back. Often exploring an educational concept on horseback can bring it to life and build a better understanding. For everyone who touches our horses, no matter their age or ability, they discover a confidence-building experience that urges them to strive for more in their lives.

For Carson (pictured right), riding has given him the strength and stamina to cope with a disease that affects his physical control. He started in our physical therapy program and has progressed to one of our advanced riding classes. Beyond the physical benefits that he has experienced, the Farm has given him a respite from his disease, the confidence to understand his potential and friendships that will last a lifetime.

Horses are amazing teachers

Horses teach responsibility. They instill trust and respect. They motivate our students to learn and help them become stronger, more confident and balanced. And they do it all without speaking a word. It is this combination of qualities that we harness to develop meaningful and relevant programs for our students. Today we collaborate with more than 60 schools and organizations on programs customized to their needs. We also have an alternative high school on-site to help students struggling in a traditional school environment.

For Summer (pictured left), one of the students at Gaitway High School, our horses helped her when she needed it most. She was experiencing difficulty at her high school and coming to Gaitway made her feel comfortable at school again. The small class size, individualized lesson plans and farm environment helped her to succeed. She says the horses calm her. When she is having a bad day, they sense it and lay their head on her shoulder to comfort her. She also bursts with pride when she talks about how she leads horses for other school students during their lessons. “I love the kids and it feels good that the teachers and parents trust me with this responsibility.”

Today more than 55 students have graduated from Gaitway High School and several more are on track to graduate this spring.

Demographics

823 youth 473 adults

708 males 588 females

39 percent of our students are minorities.

We serve students from throughout Northeast Ohio including Cuyahoga, Geauga, Lake, Portage, Ashtabula, Medina and Summit counties.

Veterans find hope and strengthOur horses help veterans heal from the emotional and physical scars of military service. Our program has grown to serve more than 200 veterans through partnerships with the Veterans Administration, Volunteers of America, Wounded Warriors and Ohio Operation Military Kids.

Our veterans participate in riding, carriage driving and equine-assisted psychotherapy sessions at the farm all conducted through the therapeutic power of the horse. Our psychotherapy sessions, where a licensed social worker and a registered equine specialist work alongside participants and horses, produce dramatic results.

The horses are often turned loose in a round pen or arena and the therapists work with the veterans on various exercises to help them overcome their struggles. For most, watching a horse’s reaction to their own body language teaches them a lot about themselves. Other exercises reveal issues that may have taken years to uncover in a traditional therapy session, if at all. Working to regulate one’s heartbeat with that of a horse can have lasting calming effects for these service men and women, which they can carry over into their everyday lives.

Our volunteers find their work rewarding

Without the 250 volunteers who walk into our barn each week, we would not be able to touch the lives of nearly 1,300 people each year. Our volunteers give more than 20,000 hours each year which equates to more than $500,000 in donated services.

Justin (pictured right) came to Fieldstone Farm after reading an article about the positive effects of volunteering. His father had died unexpectedly and he had been searching for ways to get his life back on track.

Turns out, volunteering here was one of the best decisions of his life. “This place will change you,” he says crediting the Farm with helping him cope with the death of his dad. Watching the challenges these students face, and then having the opportunity to help them on horseback is incredibly rewarding, he says. “It puts everything in perspective.”

Justin marvels at how one of his students, Tim, has progressed. He is stronger, more confident and in their four years working together, they have become good friends. Justin says one of his most important jobs is to make sure Tim has fun at the Farm while he is working with the horses. Often you will see them together laughing and smiling.

“Working here is therapy for the volunteers too. I always leave this place smiling,” says Justin.

We are incredibly grateful to our generous donors

Fieldstone Farm is extremely fortunate to have a passionate group of supporters who believe in our horses and in what they can do for individuals and ultimately for the community at large.

For Tom Murphy (pictured left) and his family foundation, the Thomas W. Murphy, Jr. Fund of the New York Community Trust, giving to Fieldstone fits in with their family’s passion for horses. Tom’s grandfather was one of the most decorated harness horse racing jockeys and trainers in the history of the sport. Tom, too, loves horses and became one of the top riders in the region and competed in college. He knows the power of having a partnership with a horse firsthand. And he loves hearing the stories of how our students are progressing at the Farm.

It is because of this belief that Tom and his family foundation were major contributors to our recent endowment campaign. In addition, this winter they also committed to fund a state-of-the-art heating and cooling system to help regulate the temperature in our indoor riding arenas. Tom remembers just how cold it gets in Cleveland in the winter months, and how hot it can be in the summer. Sometimes we do not ride in the extreme temperatures for the safety and health of our horses, students and volunteers. But with the new heaters and the large industrial fans, we will be able to keep the temperature comfortable for everyone.

For two years in a row, Fieldstone Farm has received a 4-star rating from Charity Navigator which evaluates and rates non-profit organizations on their financial health, transparency and accountability. Only 20 percent of the charities they evaluate are given consecutive 4-star ratings.
