    1865the British surgeonJoseph Listerapplied Pasteur's work to

    surgery, developing antiseptic (germ-killing) techniques includingthe use of a carbolic acid spray to kill germs in the operating

    room before surgery. This helped eliminate postoperative

    infection.

    Other physicians, includingAustrianIgnaz SemmelweissandAmericanOliver Wendell Holmes, determined that bacteria are

    also carried on the hands and clothing and transferred from

    patient to patient by the physician.

    These physicians pioneered simple techniques such as washinghands and changing into clean clothing before surgery that

    prevent wound contamination during surgery.
