Starting the discussion with what basically ethics is? Ethics is our feeling about right and wrong,
it has to do with our religious beliefs, what is required by law and last but not least it has to do
with the behaviour that our society or people around us accept. This tells that we have to fulfil
our social responsibility and to do the actions right which we think is right according to our
religious beliefs to be ethical. There are many different views in the world on the topic of ethics
and many theories are available on this topic. Personal ethics refers to one honesty and morality.
One should never lie and do something which is considered immoral in whatever situation he/she
is facing. Personal ethics also include doing well for others without expecting anything in return.
The discussion focuses on how personal ethics is required in order to achieve organisational
success. According to my point of your strong personal ethics are required to achieve success. In
the following discussion I will be referring to different theories of ethics relating to how one
should act to achieve organisational success when faced with different situations. Examples of
different companies would be discussed to support the debate. Differences between the ethical
theories would be bringing into discussion and how they support our debate would also be
discussed.
One should always act in an ethical manner which is right according to his belief and which
should also be morally right. Strong personal ethics always plays important role in organisational
success. Every individual in organisation should act ethically to be successful and if everyone
acts in ethically and in the favour of organisation then organisation can achieve its goals.
Personal ethics include acting honestly; treat all other employees of organisation in best possible
manner and in some organisation whistle blowing plays vital role in its success. It is important
for organisations success that one should make decisions which are morally right so that
organisations image dont get destroyed and it should also be in the favour of all the employees
in organisations. There are few ethical theories which are related to while making decision which
would be discussed later in the essay with an example. Acting honestly includes not taking bribe
from anyone and not doing anything which is illegal or which is against companys law. Some
people dont consider taking bribe or doing anything against companys law that big of issue.
These kinds of employees destroy the image of the company customers consider that company as
a corrupt one and they know their work wont be done until they offer the employees bribe. The
good example of this can be government owned company in developing nations where

corruption prevails everywhere and nothing is done easily without some favour to employees.
These government owned institutions even include hospitals and schools so people living there
who can afford private schools and hospitals would never prefer sending their children to
government school or taking patients to government hospitals because they know that quality of
service they give would not benefit anyone or people who give bribes are given preferences
there. If every employee of the company acts honestly and in the best favour of organisation
work would be done fast and it would be surely beneficial for the company. Customers would
prefer that company, by this company could capture huge market share and can make large
profits. Acting honestly also means an employee should not leaks the secrets of the company at
any cost. Some secrets can benefit competitors and because of those company secrets competitor
could have huge competitive edge over that company. It might be possible that competitor could
catch the market share of the company and it throws the other company out of the market. For
example if any company is planning to introduce a new product in the market and before it does
so any of it employee tell that idea to its competitor. Competitor then can make arrangements
and launch that product before the other company which has originally generated that idea. By
doing this competitor would become market leader and would have competitive edge. Therefore
its necessary for one to show full loyalty towards the organisation.
Treating employees in the best possible manner also comes in personal ethics which can play a
role in achieving organisational success. Treating employees in best possible manner means that
you should never exploit them and all the employees should be treated equally regardless of their
religion, colour, gender and age. When the entire employees would be treated equally it would
create a strong bond among all the employees and no one would feel superior then other and no
one would feel complex because of their age, gender, religion or gender. Once the strong bond is
created among all the employees this would benefit once a task is given to the team. Due to
mutual likeability among employees they would like working in teams and would give their best.
Teamwork or good teams are necessary for the success of organisations because some tasks cant
be done only by the individual or teams have to be made to complete certain tasks to get
expertise from all departments of the organisation. For example if any organisation wants to start
an advertising campaign it would need the expertise of marketer, financer and graphic designer.
It there is not mutual likeability among these three then that advertisement campaign might get

late of it might have some flaws and it wont be that affective if these all doesnt communicate
properly or work as single team. Therefore it is necessary for employees to like each other and
work as a good team members because without this it would be hard for an organisation to
achieve success.
Treating employees also include the one should not exploit and employee because of their status
or position in the organisation. For example, if any employee has lower position in organisation
then you he/she should never be exploit. Exploiting employees involves asking them to do some
personal work which is not the part of his/her job. That work is only being asked because of your
superior position in work. Exploiting employees also involve harassing them sexually. If any
female worker is working in your organisation you have superior position then her its not right
to get into some sexual relation with her to do her some favour. When you exploit an employee
their interest in work is lost which is not in the favour of organisations success.
Another important thing which comes into the category of personal ethics is whistle blowing and
in some organisations its needed for its success. Whistle blowing means when some employee
exposes some illegal or unethical action being conducted in an organisation by some employee
or the organisation as a whole. In some cases whistle blowing is justified because when some
illegal or unethical action that being done in an organisation that might be dangerous for the
society or employees. So by whistle blowing employee can inform legal authorities to take some
action to stop that illegal work which could harm society and organisation because when some
unethical action is being done in any organisation that companys repute could go down and it
could have some huge losses. It market share could decrease and its competitor could use it
against them.
Following I have explained a example in which CEO of Dynamic Inc. was faced with such a
situation in which the decision making became quite complex.
CEO of Dynamic Inc. name John Smith was facing a terrible problem. He wanted federal tax
break for his company because he didnt get that he would not be able to debt and would not be
able to get access to new capital. If he doesnt get the hand on federal tax break his company
would go down.

There was this Congressman by the name of Bill Bridge who has the power to resolve the
problem of John Smith. He was the chair of the House Ways and Means Committee. He could do
the arrangements for federal tax break for the company and which could help the company to
clear the debt and get access to new capital. Problem arose when Bridge and Washingtons
lobbyist for Smiths corporation met for the first time. Bridge agreed to solve the problem of the
company but on one condition if Smith agrees to pay $100,000 Bridge campaign fund. Smith has
never done this nor had he thought of it before, that this could also be the case. He was afraid
that in next Bridges campaign report this donation could get attention which would not be good
for companys repute. There was another problem that no other party member except Bridge can
solve their problem. (By Leon Panetta)
Now Smith is faced with the situation in which decision making has become quite complex. If he
donates in Bridges campaign fund his company reputation can be destroyed and if he doesnt
donate in the campaign fund then Bridge would not do his work and his company can get out of
the market and many employees would get unemployed which would be disastrous for the
society and employees as well. In this situation decision making has becoming quite difficult.
Here some ethical theories can help Smith in decision making. First is Deontological Ethics
which is difficult to follow, according to this theory Smith should not care about the
consequences and just to the action which is ethically right. Means that he should not donate in
Bridges fund and let the company go down. Another theory which is Technological Ethics
which says whatever the action might be the end result should be good. According to this Smith
should donate in Bridges campaign to have a favour from him to save his company and
employees. Third choice which Smith can look upon is to bring Utilitarianism in Action
which means that he should see all the consequences that could be result of his actions, he should
consider all the people that would be affected by his action and all the costs and benefits of his
action to come to any decision. Utilitarianism is the rational way to coming to an end or to final
decisions. Last but not the least he could also make a team to get to some final decision. People
who may be affected by this could have their representative in the team and team can come up
with some mutual decision by which no one is harm.
Therefore, in the essay above we discussed how important is personal ethics to achieve
organizational goals. In my opinion its almost impossible to achieve organizational success

without strong personal ethics because personal ethics its hard to manage the employees of any
organization and without management its impossible to gain success. If employees are not
managed properly then work wont be done on time and there would be flaws in the work
because of poor coordination between the workers. To achieve success in an organization one
should be loyal to the organization and honest to work that he does. If he is honest and gives his
best his customers would be satisfied. If customers are satisfied then that person would always be
successful and would get high position in the organization. Likewise, whistle blowing is justified
in some situation as it sometimes stop the action which could harm the society and which could
make legal authorities to take action against those few people who just do some unethical action
only for few amount of money without caring about its affects on society and organisation.
