“After Jesus had finished speaking, He said to Simon, 'Put out into deep water and lower your nets for a catch.'” (Luke 5:4)My Dear Brothers and Sisters-in-Christ, Sons and Daughters of our Holy Eparchy,

“The Lord’s is the earth, and the fullness thereof; the world and all who dwell therein.” (Psalm 24:1)

At the beginning of his public ministry, Jesus made his home in the village of Capernaum on the northern shore of the Sea of Galilee. (Cf. Mt 4:13) Along the coastline of this large, freshwater, inland sea, there were many villages that relied on a widespread fishing industry. As our Lord journeyed through the area it was almost inevitable that He would encounter local fishermen.

St Luke’s Gospel recounts an early meeting between Jesus, Peter, James and John. Although they have caught nothing, at the direction of Jesus they let down the nets, and the catch almost sank their boat. (Cf. Lk 5:1-11)

This year, as in the past, we have chosen a theme for the liturgical calendar to be distributed throughout the Eparchy. This year that theme is centred on the words Jesus spoke to Peter, “Put out into deep water.” (Lk 5:4) Throughout history, this command has sometimes been received by the Household of the Faith simply as a good, sensible advice; at other times, and for many individuals, it

has come as a compelling demand that has changed lives and, on many occasions, altered the course of history.

In the middle of the nineteenth century, the superiors of the Basilian Chouerite monks became aware of the spiritual needs of the small Melkite Community in faraway Australia. Lest the Melkite flock be left without a shepherd, and become detached from the Mother Church, Father Silwanos Mansour, a Basilian Chouerite priest-monk, undertook a journey that was to lead him to the other side of the world.

Without hesitation, he launched out into deeper waters. This year we will celebrate 125 years since Father (later Archimandrite) Silwanos arrived in the then Crown Colony of New South Wales.

The life and work of this extraordinary priest, and those who followed him, speak to us of the debt of gratitude that we can never repay. The first priests of our Melkite Community in Australia laboured in the Lord’s Southern Vineyard asking nothing in return. It is Jesus who reminds us that “one man sows and another reaps.” (Jn 4:37) We have been blessed with a rich harvest that others have planted.

My very dear Friends – Sons and Daughters of our Holy Eparchy, and all those who look upon us with goodwill, it is my fervent hope that this liturgical calendar will be your companion throughout this year as you labour in this Blessed land of Australia, the Lord’s Southern Vineyard, asking nothing in return. Let 2017 be a year in which many good and beautiful things are achieved for the Glory of God.

It is a particular joy to note that this year, the two Easters will coincide and the Household of the Faith – Catholic and Orthodox – will celebrate Glorious Pascha together. May it soon be always so.
