SUPERHEROESA HANDY GUIDE FOR FUNDRAISING

First of all, thanks for Uniting with us to fight cancer. I am sure that you, like me, have had cancer impact your world. And it can make us feel powerless to do much about it. However on 27 October we’re not just getting together to push ourselves and have a great day. We’re also coming together to celebrate how much extra pioneering Peter Mac research we’ll make possible.

I am not a scientist, but I know the maths is simple here. The more we each raise, the more research happens. And research is the reason that thousands like me, across Melbourne and Victoria, are still able to take on Unite.

LET’S MAKE OUR EFFORTSREALLY COUNT

He is riding with his son and their mates to help

give hope to anyone else who faces the

fight themselves.

Graeme has overcome cancer an astounding

five times!

I should just add two things. The awesome Unite team at the Foundation really will help you out if you get stuck, so feel free to ask.

And on the topic of asking, I know you are already a money-raising magician. This guide covers new things to try so you can push for more donations. We do also have a beginner’s version. If you would like that, it’ll be on your resources page (connected to the fundraising hub).

Good luck! Thanks for all you are about to do. And all the life-saving cancer research that we’re going to help fund at Peter Mac!

This guide can help you in a couple of different ways. First it will provide new ideas to help if you have asked your friends for support many times before.

Second, we’ll look at some bigger ideas to help you push toward being an Ambassador. Either way the first thing is to smash your initial fundraising target of $750. We’ll have a look at that, over 5 weeks, on the next page. If you have tried these ideas, or reached your target already, hop toward the end. That is where we’re hiding the pro tips.

I’M HERE TO HELP

RAISE $750IN JUST 5 WEEKSLast year people raised, on average, nearly $1,000 each for Unite! Five of our fundraising heroes (they have raised over $400,000 for Peter Mac so far) got together and shared their secrets for success, in this awesome 5-week plan.

Week 1 Week 2 Week 3 Week 4 Week 5$150 - Start it! $350 - Share it! $500 - Work it! $650 - Sell it! $750 - Done it!The sooner you start, the faster you’ll hit your goal, and the more you’ll raise. Lead the way by making your own donation, then ask just 3 people who understand why you support Peter Mac. Often at least 1 will donate and be steered by the level of your donation. $75 from you, plus another $75 from a friend = $150 (that’s already 20%!).

Record a very short video or do a Facebook Live on your phone and use it to share why you are taking on the challenge and who you are dedicating it to. Share it on your Facebook or Insta stories. Name / @ / DM your friends in the description, AND ADD YOUR FUNDRAISING PAGE LINK. For every 5 direct shares, usually at least 1 person will give. Reach out to 20 people and even if just 4 of them sponsor you $50, that’s $200.

Write a post on LinkedIn or send an email to your colleagues and suppliers, sports club or parents / teachers at school. Most updates and emails generate at least 3 donations, so there is another 3x $50 to add to your total which is now $500. (Also: why not ask your boss for a donation or about company matched giving?)

We all love cake, snags and chocolate. Bake, brew, buy, or burn something(s). Add some love to make them posh and set out your stall. Sell the delights at work, school or at the footy club. Shift 30 biscuits at $4 a pop and that’s $120 on your total! Ask some people for a little extra donation and it’s $150. Then your total moves to a massive $650.

Update your progress, thank those who have given, and let the rest know how close you are to your goal. We’re all busy, so they may have missed previous emails or posts. A little reminder is often all it takes. As you’re so close to your goal it’s useful to start raising it a little each time you are 90% of the way there. Your friends will love to push you over the line... If 4 of them donate just $50, there’s another $200, and you have totally smashed it! Your exclusive shirt or jersey will be on its way to you.

RAISE $1,750IN JUST 5 WEEKSTried the previous ideas and need some fresh inspiration? Hit your target and want to fly up to Ambassador level? We’re here for you! On a recent ride with a few of Peter Mac’s fundraising superheroes we borrowed some top tips for you! Apart from hints about how to rock Lycra, we also got these gems. And pulled them into a second 5-week plan.

Week 1 Week 2 Week 3 Week 4 Week 5$350 - Host it! $750 - Wear it! $1,150 - Collect it! $1,450 - Show it $1,750 - Picture it!Pick something you, your family and friends or colleagues love: food, gin, wine, coffee, chocolate, scrabble or durian. Host a night where you invite 10 people to join you for a tasting or dinner or games night. Ask them all for $35 to attend = $350. (Bonus: you could run 2 or 3 of these in the run-up to Unite.)

The core idea here is simple:reward your super sponsorsby adding their name toyour shirt or jersey. Set thebar at $100 for friends andoffer to get them a coffee! For a local business, theycould perhaps donate $150and you could thank themon social. This idea maytake longer than one week, but it is hugely valuable, sopush for it! If just 4 supersponsors are willing to backyou, literally on your shirt, that’s at least $400!

Carry an old-fashionedpaper sponsorship form withyou. EVERYWHERE. Ask thelovely people in the localshop, bar, deli, pizza place orMaccas near you for a littlesponsorship toward yourtarget. Tell them your storyand wear your Unite shirt /jersey when you go out. Whilesome folks may not be ableto help out, many will. Justtwenty $20 contributionsmakes a huge $400 difference. Ask, ask, ask. Andask some more. Bonus: simply pay the cash in online by sponsoring yourself.

A bit more hosting for you.Arrange a film night orweekend marathon session.Ask your boss to use somespace at work, a communitycentre or a local cinema ifyou know half of St Kilda.Collect some small raffleprizes from local businessesor ask if you can raffle aday’s holiday at work. Charge $20 to attend, sell popcorn, and offer raffle tickets. Before the show, get up and tell your story, and make sure you have a collecting bucket ready for some cash after too! Just 15 people can help you raise $300.

Saving the simple one to theend. It builds on all the normalideas around sharing on social, email and LinkedIn.Lay out all your kit for the big day and take a vid of you preparing your bike or trainers for a training session. Show your friends what you are going to be wearing and let them know how far you will berunning, riding or walking. Tellthem that the first 6 people todonate $50 will get a personalmessage of thanks from you ata pit stop on the course! That’s $300, and you are an Ambassador. Plus you will have reminded anyone who has yet to sponsor you!
