Churt is a picturesque ancient village located within the green grasp of the South Downs National Park and close to the popular market town of Farnham. Surrey is, despite its proximity to London, the most wooded county in England. Close to the main thoroughfares, large easily accessible commons are there waiting to be explored via an abundance of footpaths and bridleways.

A D E S I G N F O R L I F E

Britain’s architectural heritage is one of the nation’s greatest assets and Sir Edwin Lutyens designed some of the most revered buildings across the world, a diverse portfolio which included country houses, public buildings, war memorials and a presidential palace - Rashtrapati Bhavan, the official home of the President of India located in New Delhi, India.

Lutyens is among the most celebrated architects of the 20th century. He undertook an extraordinary variety of commissions, including a cathedral, an Oxford college and even council flats. His architectural versatility stood him apart from his peers.

London-born, Lutyen’s passion for architecture pre-dated his days as a student at the Kensington School of Art in 1885. However, it was this design environment

which paved the way for his architectural future, firstly as an apprentice in the office of Ernest George and Peto.

After being commissioned to design a family house at Crooksbury, near Farnham in Surrey, Lutyens set up in practice by himself in 1889.

In 1913, Lutyens was appointed architect to the new Imperial capital of British India at New Delhi and in 1919, Lutyens was approached by Sir Alfred Mond, First Commissioner of Works, to design The Cenotaph to stand on Whitehall, central London.

After an official approach by Prime Minister David Lloyd George, Lutyens produced the design for a cenotaph that would be erected to coincide with the

Peace Day celebrations in July 1919.

Edwin Lutyens died in 1944.

David Lloyd George lived in Churt, on land directly adjacent to The Gables, a truly fitting location for this work of respect and adoration by Mulberry Homes.

Lloyd George also owned the land on which The Gables is situated. and in tribute the road will be known as Lloyd George Gardens.
