SpectraLight Jr. is a transportable, multiple light source viewing booth. It is used for the visual evaluation of color and appearance and Metamerism testing. It provides:

• Filtered Tungsten Halogen Daylight Simulation • Balanced Light Levels • Traceable, Certification and Calibration

SpectraLight Jr. is equipped with four (4) selectable light sources and UV including: • A Choice of Simulated Daylight (D50, D65 or D75 ) • Horizon Daylight at 2300K • Illuminant “A” (Incandescent) at 2856K • A Choice of Cool White Fluorescent (CWF), U30 or TL84 • Ultraviolet (UV)

Only one source can be activated at a time to avoid the possibility of mixing sources, with the exception of Ultraviolet (UV). UV is the only lamp that may operate alone or with the other sources and will provide 5X the energy level of Near UV found in natural daylight.

SpectraLight Jr. meets or exceeds all National, International and industry specific standards currently used for visual evaluation including: ASTM D-1729, Detroit Color Council (DCC) Bulletin #3, ISO 3664, DIN, AS and BSI standards.

Safety Instructions • PLEASE READ AND FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS—Read and follow all

instructions before attempting to assemble, install or operate the unit.

• RETAIN THIS MANUAL FOR FUTURE REFERENCE—Keep this manual handy for others to read or refer to when they need to operate the unit.

• OBEY WARNINGS—Please comply with all warnings and safeguards that are provided in this manual. If the unit is used in a manner not specified in this manual, the protection provided by the unit may be impaired.

• DO NOT BLOCK VENTS— Light sources contribute heat to the area of operation. Heat is dissipated through the vents in the top panel. Blocking of the vent could result in overheating, mechanical failure, and a fire hazard if flammables or combustibles are present.

• PROTECT FROM WATER AND MOISTURE—Maintain electrical safety when using this unit. Do not use it in an area where there is possible hazard of electric shock from spilled water or other liquids or uncontrolled moisture.

• CLEAN PROPERLY—Wipe the unit with a clean, white lint-free cloth. Do not apply liquid cleaners or agents containing wax, since these can yellow and change reflectance and gloss properties. Clean outer surfaces with a dampened cloth containing a mild soap.

• CAREFULLY HANDLE THE LAMPS AND DAYLIGHT FILTERS—Allow the lamps and daylight filters to cool before handling them. Always use lens paper or an equivalent to handle any of the replacement tungsten lamps. Skin oils interfere with lamp performance.

Installation The SpectraLight Jr. comes ready to use with the exception of installing the glass diffuser. Installation is simple. Please follow the steps below to install a new SpectraLight Jr. viewing booth.

1. Move the viewing booth shipping container to the area where it will be used. Be sure to allow for sufficient room for assembly.

2. Carefully unpack and remove the viewing booth components from the shipping container. Look for the light booth and the glass diffuser inside the shipping container.

Note: Be sure to keep the shipping container in the event the booth must be returned for servicing.

3. Place the viewing booth on the table or desk where it will be used. Flip the booth over so that it is upside down. It is alright to rest the booth on the luminaire.

Note: The table or desk height should be determine by the average height of the observer and whether observations will be made from a standing or sitting position.

4. Remove the diffuser from the special packaging.

5. Insert the diffuser hinge pins into the front of the slotted receptacles located inside the booth on the underside of the luminaire. The bumpy side of the diffuser should face out to the interior of the booth.

Operation Prior to operating the unit, please become familiar with the SpectraLight Jr. controls and front panel.

Controls and User Interface The SpectraLight Jr. front panel has five (lamp) on buttons and one (lamp) off button. Each (lamp) on button has a small green indicator light, which illuminates when the corresponding lamp is activated. Each lamp on button acts as a toggle switch for the lamp source. A single press of the lamp button toggles the lamp on and off.

All lamps are automatically turned off five minutes after the last lamp is activated. Therefore, if the unit is left idle lamps are turned off and lamp hours are saved. A cooling fan is automatically turned on when any lamp is activated. The fan will remain on for five minutes after the last lamp activation.

The green light on the UV button will blink at different rates to indicate the status of the light booth:

Heart beat, once every two seconds: power is being supplied to the unit, and no lamps are active.

Rapid, twice per second: luminaire temperature has exceeded 70°C . For more information, refer to Troubleshooting on page 13.

Continuous green: the UV lamp is activated.

Continuous off: another lamp source is active or the unit is not connected to a power source.

DAY Button This button turns on the Daylight Lamp. Any lamp that was previously selected is automatically shut off.

F Button This button turns on the Fluorescent source. One of three possible sources will be used: CWF (Cool White Fluorescent), TL84 or U30.

A Button This button turns on the Incandescent Illuminant A source, 2856K.

HOR Button This button turns on the Horizon Daylight lamp, 2300K.

OFF Button Pressing the OFF button turns off all active lamps (including UV) and all front panel indicators. The UV indicator will have a two-second heartbeat to indicate that the unit is powered on and operational. The 'UV' indicator will stop blinking and assume normal operation if any of the front panel button is activated (including OFF).

To turn off the fan, press and hold the OFF button for three seconds.

Each lamp source button is a toggle switch for an on/off condition for the lamp. It is not necessary to press the OFF button to turn off a selected lamp source. For example, if the HOR lamp source is activated, pressing the HOR button again will turn the lamp source off.

Hour Meter The hour meter indicates the total time the Daylight Lamps are active. The hour meter will indicate that it is actively counting when the hourglass symbol on the display blinks. If the hour meter is not actively counting, the hourglass symbol will continuously remain on.

The hour meter should be reset to zero whenever the Daylight lamps are replaced. It can be reset to zero hours by simultaneously pressing and holding the ‘DAY’ and ‘OFF’ switches for three seconds.

Lamp Sequencing The SpectraLight Jr. is capable of performing a "Lamp Sequence"; a repeating series of chosen lamp activations in the succession. A lamp sequence is helpful if a hands-free visual assessment under multiple light sources is needed.

A lamp sequence will repeat for a five-minute period, after which all lamps are automatically turned off. Pressing the OFF button can also terminate the lamp sequence. Once the five minute sequence period is over, the same sequence may be re-programmed again.

To program a lamp sequence, proceed as follows:

1. Make sure the unit is powered on.

2. Press and hold for three seconds the source button for the first lamp in the sequence. Release the button.

3. Press and hold for three seconds the source button for the new lamp in the sequence. Release the button.

4. Repeat step 3 for any additional lamps in the sequence.

5. The sequence will start immediately. Each source in the sequence is turned on for four seconds each. The entire sequence will repeat for a five-minute period.

6. If UV is needed, it may be included by performing either of the following:

• After the sequence is programmed and has begun, press the UV button. The UV lamp will remain on for the entire duration of the sequence.

• After the first lamp is added to the sequence, press and hold the UV button for three seconds. The entire sequence will be performed with UV and then again without UV. The sequence will continue to alternate with and without UV until the five-minute sequence period is over.

If so, please attempt the possible solution. If the problem is still not resolved, please contact the nearest GretagMacbeth Service Representative.

Lamps/Indicators Unexpectedly Off OR the UV Indicator Is Blinking Rapidly Situation Description:

If the luminaire (upper chamber) of the SpectraLight Jr. reaches or exceeds 70°C (detected via an internal sensor), all lamps and corresponding indicators will turn off, and the fan will run continuously until the high temperature condition is relieved. While the high temperature condition is active, the 'UV' indicator will blink rapidly (approximately twice per second), and all front panel switches will be ignored.

Once the high temperature condition is relieved, the front panel switches will be honored and the 'UV' indicator will blink on once every two seconds until one of the front panel switches is activated. The fan will continue to run for an additional 5 minutes after the high temperature condition is relieved, and will resume normal operation if any of the lamps are turned on during that time.
